My interest in engineering blossomed during high school, driven by my strong commitment to the physical sciences and mathematics. I consistently excelled among my peers in these subjects, and both my parents and teachers motivated me to pursue engineering in college. Upon enrolling, I decided to specialize in chemical engineering, inspired by a lecture from the Department Chair, Dr. XXXX, who highlighted the wide-ranging applications of chemical engineering. These include organic and inorganic chemicals, petrochemicals, ceramics, and plastics, with numerous products like food processing, detergents, glass, and paint being integral to our daily lives. As a practical young woman eager to improve our natural and chemical environments, I completed my undergraduate studies in chemical engineering and proceeded to earn a master's degree in the same field in my home country, India.
I am now keen to pursue a master's degree at the University of Florida, particularly because I admire your faculty's research interests and the university's outstanding facilities.
My resolve to pursue a career in this field was further reinforced by visits to various heavy industrial facilities in India, such as the wastewater treatment system at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Coromandel’s phosphate fertilizer production plant, Hindustan Petroleum’s distillation plant, and the desalination plant in Chennai. During these visits, I was thrilled to meet several scientists working in the Research and Development (R&D) sections, and interacting with them unveiled the vast research opportunities in process control, modeling, and design.
One of my treasured experiences is assisting a professor for three months with research on “effluent treatments using adsorption techniques employing both continuous and batch processes in a mass transfer laboratory.” I had the opportunity to assist in designing and constructing a pilot plant for the continuous preparation of adsorbents and effluents. Later, I aided the same professor with his research on “biogas production from cow dung in an environmental laboratory.” These projects taught me the importance of teamwork and inspired me to pursue a career as a research investigator. During my master's program in India, I particularly enjoyed presenting seminars on topics such as electronic controllers, fuel cells, and absorption techniques.
After completing my master's degree, I taught undergraduates in the Department of Chemical Engineering for two-and-a-half years. I then got married and moved to the United States, where I have been since May 2009. I am particularly excited to study process control, transport phenomena, fluid mechanics, process modeling, thermodynamics, and nanoscience technology. Your program will lay the groundwork for a creative career, allowing me to publish in these fields. The University of Florida is an ideal place for my research, offering excellent technology, expertise, and resources, and I am a great fit for the Process Control Lab. I am especially eager to work with Prof. XXXX and look forward to learning more about the research conducted under his guidance.
