Writing a compelling Letter of Appeal for graduate school admission requires a thoughtful, respectful, and strategic approach. Here's how to craft a persuasive letter that gives you the best chance of reconsideration:

Use a formal letter format with header and salutation. Address the letter to the Admissions Committee or a specific person if known. Clearly state that you are appealing the admission decision.​ Express appreciation for the opportunity to apply and your continued interest in the program. Acknowledge the decision respectfully without sounding defensive. Be sure to provide new or clarifying information that was not included or emphasized in your original application, such as improved grades or test scores, new research, work, or volunteer experience, ​​or personal challenges that affected your application (briefly and constructively).

Demonstrate fit and motivation stating clearly why this particular program is essential to your goals, and how you align with the program’s mission, faculty, or research, as well as what you will contribute to the cohort. Reaffirm your commitment to the program. Politely request reconsideration. Thank them for their time and consideration.​ ​​Use a professional closing (e.g., “Sincerely”) and include your full name and contact information.

 

Attach supporting documents: If you have new transcripts, recommendation letters, or awards, mention them and include them if allowed. Some schools have specific appeal procedures—check their website or contact admissions. Submit your appeal promptly, ideally within a few weeks of the decision.
