Now a US citizen, I am originally from Colombia, coming to the USA at the age of eleven. I visit Colombia every year and like to think of myself as something of a Colombian expert in training. As both a Colombian, a member of the US Armed Forces, and an avid student of political conflict, I have long studied the civil war in Colombia with a profound sense of fascination driven by my concern for the very high levels of violence to which my people have been subjected for more than a half century. I have also closely followed the long and drawn out - but, finally, successful - peace process. As an undergraduate student at XXXX State University working towards my BA in Religious Studies (2008), I became fully immersed in the study of Theology and social issues and continue this immersion until today, seeking to cultivate it as a permanent lifestyle. Both Hebrew 1 and 2 as well as Greek 1 and 2 are required language courses for the completion of the M.DIV degree at XXXX Seminary in Pasadena. At HDS, doing something like assisting Dr. Giovanni Bazzana with his research on the study of ancient writings relating to magic and witchcraft and their connections with sociocultural practices would be a dream come true. It would also be a profound honor to assist with the Religious Literacy Project at XXXXDS, perhaps engaging with Venezuela in this regard, the land of my birth now in deep crises and in need of our support and moral encouragement in the North. I appreciate the broad array of course offerings within and through the XXXX Divinity School’s THM Program. XXXX seems to me to be the optimal platform for a theologian and minister seeking to excel as the Director of a faith-based Drug and Alcohol Program; especially since the greater Boston area also offers a plethora of internships and faith-based resources devoted to drug and alcohol recovery. I want to give my life to spiritual leadership and to do everything that I can to reduce and prevent the suffering that results from substance abuse. A Chess player and a member of several reading clubs, I currently serve as the Secretary of a Veterans Support Group called "XXXX" based out of Los Angeles Temple Street Veterans Hospital. As well traveled as I am read, I have spent many months each exploring Germany, France, Italy, and Greece in addition to Venezuela and the USA. I was raised in Israel and moved to the states at the age of 21. I completed my undergraduate studies at XXXX in 2005 and then my MBA at XXXX. Now, I very much want to study for the Ph.D. in Economics at XXXX. I am especially interested in doing research in the areas of Financial Economics, International Economics, and Labor Economics. I look forward to serving in a long and distinguished career as a researcher and professor at a university. In addition to Hebrew and English, I am also fully fluent in Moroccan and plan to use this ability at some point in my research endeavors. I am a very mature young woman and with a highly diversified background that has provided me with the opportunity to develop extensive analytical capabilities in a wide variety of areas. I have hands-on experience in the business world since I run my own construction company in addition to my formal education. I am firmly convinced that I have essential ideas concerning the economic impact of illegal immigration, and I look forward to spending years investigating and writing about this phenomenon. I very much appreciate diversity and have spent significant periods in Italy, England, Mexico, and Canada, in addition to Morocco. In 2007, I worked on a course project for my senior year, developing a plant-design business plan for Chevron. I learned how to perform financial and microeconomic analyses, such as relating the price of soybeans (i.e., the raw material in biodiesel) to fluctuations in the supply and demand. From then on, I focused on economics and business, financial/market analysis, and entrepreneurship. Now I seek to join UXXX’s doctoral program in economics, which will be my cornerstone for business studies, and I intend to become a very research-focused professor. I grew up in a family, where academic values and a passion for unconventional learning was instilled from an early age. My parents encouraged me to excel at extracurricular education. At 15, they enrolled me in a Young Mathematics Doctorate program at Bar-Ilan University, Israel, where I mastered the basics of single- and multivariable calculus and linear algebra. After solid performances in college calculus, economics, chemistry, and physics courses, I decided to pursue a bachelor's in chemical engineering, to take advantage of my passion for chemistry, physics, and mathematics. I developed strong analytical and research capabilities through individual and group assignments, including the Chevron project. I gained additional hands-on experience with economic and financial analyses through a position with the Israeli government’s Tourist Office. As an Accountant and Project Manager, I took on increasingly complex projects. For example, I helped analyze the travel behaviors of American citizens (through surveys) to understand how different groups such as clergy and members’ spouses arrive at their travel decisions, and how to target advertising with Israel-focused commercials. This position helped me better understand how international economies are intertwined through trade, immigration, and overseas marketing. After graduating from UXXX, I joined XXXX University’s MBA program, where I focused on Finance and Accounting. Graduate-level courses such as International Finance and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) deepened my interest in finance and economic principles. I especially enjoyed coursework that pushed me beyond the lecture material and provided research opportunities through individual and group assignments. For example, for a Mergers and Acquisitions project, I analyzed the oil industry acquisition of foreign companies for multinational diversification purposes. I learned that many M&A transactions fail due to poor integration. Many acquirers focus only on prices and fail to consider other vital factors such as management teams, operations, and culture. One of the most memorable lessons I have learned is that it is harder to recover from underpaying for the wrong company than recovering from overpaying for the right one. I have also learned economics in the context of entrepreneurship since my husband, and I founded a home improvement business in 2006. By late 2007, however, as real estate values declined, mortgage defaults and consequent foreclosures contributed directly to the collapse of giant institutions such as Bear Sterns and Lehman Brothers. It also meant the end of steady demand for our company’s services. While many of our competitors folded their operations, we made strategic changes, including targeting a more affluent clientele that could pay out of pocket (rather than using home equity) through alliances with interior designers and narrowing our service offerings to a niche in room additions and home automation. Such moves have helped us maintain profitability in this challenging time. I realize that the science of economic predictions can and should be perfected, and I am eager to make my contribution to the field in hopes of helping individuals and families survive future financial crises. Working as an Administrator at XXU, assisting Faculty Affairs Associates with responsibilities related to procedures for faculty tenure, rank, and sabbaticals, I have gained an inside perspective on academia that has deepened my desire to become a professor since I have been inspired by the lifelong commitment to learning of my colleagues and have very much enjoyed nearly constant intellectual stimulation. I am excited about pursuing research in several related areas of economics, mainly: financial, international, and labor economics. I am especially intrigued by the effect of illegal immigration on the US labor market and the federal budget, especially since many of the estimated millions of unlawful immigrants open small businesses without paying self-employment taxes or contributing to pension plans. This results in federal losses, as services are provided to non-tax-paying residents. Nevertheless, I also study how many of these residents perform many essential services at the lower end of the work spectrum (e.g., sanitation, childcare), which has many positive effects on our economy. My research interests parallel many of those of professor XXXX, and I look forward to benefitting from his extensive knowledge concerning international immigration, labor markets, and the consequence of globalization. I especially enjoyed reading his paper “The Economics and Policy of Illegal Immigration in the United States.” I am also very much engaged with the economic aspects of Middle East conflicts. My father was injured in both the Yom Kippur War and the First Lebanon War and has suffered from PTSD ever since. We faced challenging times since it was difficult for my father to maintain a steady job and support a family of six on army disability income. I find Professor XXXX’s research in the field fascinating, and I will be honored to learn from his extensive experience and diverse background. I specifically enjoyed his working paper titled “Hamas, Taliban and the Jewish Underground: an Economist’s View of Radical religious Militias.” I want the way that Professor XXXX models the behavior of radical religious militias and suggests a constructive strategy for limiting militia activities through economic development and aid to stabilize governments that provide local public goods in an unbiased manner. I keenly anticipate studying in-depth the factors behind successful mergers and acquisitions, as well as lending practices, the volume, quality, and outcomes of M&A transactions. I especially look forward to studying with with Professor XXXX as a result of his extensive research on international trade, foreign investment, and multinational enterprises, especially in the areas of productivity estimation and information economics. UXX’s economics Ph.D. program is my first choice because of its outstanding faculty and interdisciplinary approach. Working with such mentors will help me reach my goal of becoming an economics professor at a research-focused university. My academic and professional experience has given me a solid educational foundation and the analytical skills and passion for economics analysis and research. I believe that I have a unique blend of experiences that will help me tackle tasks from a creative and original point of view.

My career path was set into motion long before my birth – my grandfather was a highly influential architect in our native Ukraine. As a result, many of our family discussions were about building new projects as I grew up. My family tells me that I inherited my talent in drawing and spatial vision from him. I thought my excellent marks confirmed this in geometry and art classes. I could not wait to finish high school so that I could go to college and study architecture, and I w, as most thankful when I was admitted to a top-tier architecture school in my country. My grandfather was on the list oflistitects who got projects from gthe overnment. But during the time of the Soviet dictatorship, architects were not allowed to create what they wanted. Rather, the government dictated to them how buildings and cities must be designed and built. Thus, I am also thankful that I am able to devote my lifetime to creativity, building comfortable, eco-friendly space where human values serve as the basis. My personal history has been characterized since early childhood by an intense desire to serve others, helping to make their lives better. Especially since adolescence, I have been drawn to Art in Architecture, building in such a way as to touch the heart of the beholder. Each and every project that I undertook as an undergraduate student meant a great deal to me. In addition to a children’s playground, I also invested an enormous amount of time and energy in the design of a bus stop, an exhibition hall, and a café and then graduated to some of my most complex and detailed work to date, designing a factory as well as recreational tourist center and restaurant. Continuing my studies at Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture in my native Ukraine, earning dual Master’s Degrees in Design as well as Architecture, my projects continued to grow in complexity, including an entertainment facility and even a theater. I faced a lot of challenges in my life, moving to the USA where I have now been spending large amounts of time making friends and perfecting my English, closely studying many architectural marvels from coast to coast. I have fallen several times in my process of assimilation to America, but each time I get back up on my feet with a new personality, greater fortitude, wiser about American customs and better able to express myself in English. I see my American experience thus far to be especially complimentary to the development of my own personal vision and style in architectural design. Of all the people who have touched my life, my grandmother has been the most formative in a singular way. She has been paralyzed in both legs for almost as long as I can remember. Since I have always loved her dearly and we are especially close, since the very outset of my special passion for architecture, designing space where my grandmother would feel more comfortable and her autonomy could increase through greater mobility—has been at the top of my list of day dreams. A few years ago I re-designed and rebuilt my grandmother’s house taking into consideration her special needs and building new, more comfortable space for her as a unique user. Building codes in the Ukraine barely take wheel chair bound people into consideration. For me this is a civil rights issue with which I look forward to a lifetime of continued engagement; researching, analyzing, contributing to policy discussions, serving as a leader or spokesperson for the human rights of disabled people. Who is better to fill this role than someone who has given a big chunk of their life so far to the study of how architecture can better meet the needs of disabled persons? I have come to adore the way that architects shape the overall look of cities as well as smaller towns, providing society with its principal reference point, a bridge from the past to the future. We have a long way to go at seizing every design and implantation opportunity that presents itself along the way as we always continue to struggle to protect our communities and enrich the lives of those who belong to them. My own unique circumstances in life, especially surrounding the impact of my grandmother, have led me to develop a unique focus with unique gifts that make me an ideal candidate for the role of architect on behalf of the disabled. My unique life circumstances have also prepared me for excellence in the area of responsible use of natural resources, developing eco-friendly designs, improving the environmental friendliness of buildings, implementing innovative design technologies and techniques, researching energy efficiency, and promoting sustainable design. I worked for the same company for almost 6 years because they promoted me, as well as the other more talented employees. Together, we attended numerous annual architecture fairs and exhibitions, some international. I labored on behalf of three companies in three different European countries over roughly the same time period, every year from 2006 till 2011 as well as from 2014 to 2015: the Maison&objet in Paris, France, the Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano in Italy, and IMM in Cologne, Germany, networking with French, Italian, and German architects and designers. This has helped me to stay abreast of new trends for residential interior design and for residential furniture in Europe in particular. I enjoyed meeting some of the world’s leaders in furniture manufacture in all three countries. I dream of centering at least the first part of my new architectural career in the USA and I simply see XXXX as the ideal springboard upon which to achieve my professional goals, making my maximum contribution to my field. On the basis of completing your program, I plan to pass the ARE Exam, practice architecture internationally, and eventually set up my own company. I am a 24-year-old woman from Singapore who has long dreamed of studying in the UK, and I have developed a solid business background in real estate and management. My interest in architecture, urban design and development, and progressive respect for our environment through green, sustainable urban development has grown exponentially over time. My travels have also left me most keen to study architecture. Traveling through Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, the USA, Canada, China, Hong Kong, and Macau left me constantly fascinated by the layers of architectural design etched in place by the history of colonization and the Portuguese influence in Malacca and Macau being a prime example. I want to study in the Architecture Program at Westminster because I see it as the most suitable, progressive program available. I am convinced that training in management and working as a real estate professional will enable me to make the most of your program. I want to study in England because the UK educational system is recognized and respected worldwide with a tradition of academic excellence. I believe that, with a degree from Westminster, I would be able to find work in any part of the world. I think that your program would provide me with the optimal foundation for my ongoing professional development. I am also very much attracted to the UK’s incredible mix of diverse cultures coupled with contemporary ways of thinking, all held together with a strong sense of identity and tradition. Graduating from the Singapore Institute of Management has set me on a path toward my long-term goal of working as a project manager, complemented by my last two years as a Senior Realtor. I have also worked full-time in the area of Financial Planning, thus rounding out a solid background in business for someone my age. Furthermore, I have spent years working as a volunteer, tutoring orphans, raising funds for charities, and making handcrafted items for the National Kidney Foundation. I have also had the privilege of serving as a Staff Sergeant with the Girls Brigade Singapore as a Drill Instructor and an organizer of regional camps, designing and implementing creative drills, and receiving the Brigade’s Gold Award in honor of my accomplishments. I maintained an ore Curriculum Activities score of A1 throughout my school days and have often been commended for my strong leadership skills and high level of personal and professional organization. It was intended that I should be a physician, and, in my early teens, I was thrilled to go along with this parental ambition. However, my family members are mainly involved in engineering, design, and architecture, and, in my mid-teens, genetic influences suddenly seemed to supersede my original career intentions. After much concentrated private study, I spent all my spare time reading about art and architecture and eventually qualified for entry to study at the Tehran College of Art and Architecture at the age of 18. I wanted to study Interior Design, but no such program of study existed in Iran, so I studied the closest alternative, Industrial Design. I was awarded my degree in May 2007. I was aware of the prestigious reputation of Virginia Tech. in my areas of interest and wanted to apply for entry once I had completed my studies in Iran. My father graduated from VT and was the first person to take a Ph.D. in Earthquake Engineering. I wanted to experience the academic environment my father loved so much. Unfortunately, my family could not afford to fund this ambition until 2009, when I could finally begin my studies in Virginia and entered the Interior Design program. I was thrilled to study Interior Design, but my professor urged me to change my major to architecture because she saw that my work was biased toward large-scale concepts and vision. I thank her daily for pointing me in what I see now as the right direction. I am fascinated by architecture because of the melding of science and art towards creating something that has utility and beauty, impacts the environment of many people, and that will perhaps stand for generations. The responsibilities of an architect are pretty breathtaking, combining many disparate skills and taking account of the needs and views of many with direct and indirect interests in a project. I am also very excited at the developments in building design and materials that will eventually provide us with buildings that produce energy rather than consume it. I hope to be a part of the solution to energy use reduction through architecture. I have been fortunate to be exposed to architectural styles in Iran and the US. I am also part of the school’s ‘study abroad program’ based in Switzerland and have seen the best in European architecture during my visits. I look forward to a further study trip to Europe in the spring semester of 2012. I love the academic environment at VT and want to undertake my higher studies in this positive, supportive and challenging milieu. Thus I am applying in this, my fourth year of bachelor's degree studies, to undertake a combined BA and MA program in my fifth year and complete the MA program in my sixth year of study. I know there is no valid reason to pursue a career in architecture unless one is passionate about it. I also know I have the necessary passion for becoming a successful and influential architect. I hope to be involved in research relating to urban architecture during the program. I am also aware that those fortunate enough to have well-rewarded careers that they love should donate some of their time and skill to assist charities and non-profit bodies in achieving their goals, and I intend to do so.

It has always been my intention to ‘make a difference rather than merely make a living. My wish to join this Master’s program is an essential step in enabling me to make that difference. I can think of a few areas of work and research that can provide such general and vital benefits as Biotechnology. I am passionately interested in pursuing an academic and professional career in this work area. I am particularly excited at the prospect of working in an area where so many exciting and rapid advances have been and are being made. I am very keen to assist in achieving further advances in the field. I hope to work in an area that will enable me to help achieve a situation in which the most advanced biotechnological advances are made as widely available. I also believe that I have the communication skills and personality that provide the potential for me to become a ‘bridge’ to enable physicians to understand and effectively apply innovative treatments as they become available. I have a solid academic record, having achieved a GPA of 3.85 in my undergraduate studies to date, and I have been the recipient of various literary awards. I believe that my research experience in Biology, coupled with an advanced understanding of statistical techniques, provides me with an excellent basis not merely to succeed but to excel in the program. I have a particular interest in the areas of nanotechnology and tissue regeneration. I hope to assist in research in one or both of these areas of study during the program. I am also enthusiastic about the business aspect of the program. I cannot claim more than basic knowledge of this study area.
