I was born in Iran to a British military family and raised in England. I now live in XXXX, California. I hold a B.S. degree in Business Administration and Management from Tehran University, a Master’s degree in Health Administration and Policy awarded by the XXU and a Ph.D. in Health Administration and Policy awarded by XXU. I currently hold senior posts in health administration and as an Executive Health Administrator. I have long been interested in the legislative regulation related to patient and public safety and now wish to pursue formal qualifications in this area of expertise. It is clear that the ever-increasing rapidity of medical advances carries with it increasingly complex sets of potential risks and the need for greater specialist expertise in the drafting and monitoring of effective regulation. During my long experience in health administration, I have been involved in the conduct of various clinical trials and have consequently acquired some knowledge of the regulatory environment relating to pharmaceuticals and medical devices. I also have a long standing interest in patient safety and the development and application of ethical behavior in health related research and product development. The program provides an ideal way for me to pursue my interests and to enhance the general welfare and well being of patients. I have had a very successful academic career to date and am determined to excel in this program, should my application be successful. I undertake to give my work in the program my highest priority. I enjoy acquiring new skills and knowledge but, because the subject matter of the program is so important to me, I can promise very enthusiastic and wholehearted participation. I have substantial previous research experience in interdisciplinary environments and am very familiar with the techniques applied in successful research. I regard the prospect of undertaking research in this subject to be very exciting and hope to do so in the area of healthcare ethics. I also look forward to sharing the fruits of my significant research experience with my class. It is my intention, having completed the M.S. program, to pursue the Ph.D. in Regulatory Science in order to maximize my utility in this vital field and to be enabled to teach the subject as an expert. I am aware that health product regulation is not sufficiently advanced in some parts of the world and I hope to share my knowledge and skills with those who promote effective health product regulation in such communities. I have long been involved in volunteer activity related to the provision of humanitarian aid to under-developed countries with such organizations as the ‘Childrens’ Hunger Fund’. I have headed delegation to some of these countries to provide health education and humanitarian aid. I have travelled very extensively and have been exposed to many different cultures during my life. My first language is English but I also speak French, Italian, Spanish and Armenian. I have happily studied, worked and socialized with people of many different cultures and social backgrounds. I regard myself as being exceptionally culturally aware and sensitive and I appreciate the importance of these characteristics in work and research related to health regulation. I am aware that the program will attract many well qualified applicants. However I genuinely consider myself to be an excellent candidate by reason of my proven academic ability, my relevant experience and background but, most importantly, my passion for the advancement of health product safety. I am an Iranian woman who was born and raised in Iran. I anticipate the award of the M.Eng. (Chemical Engineering) from the University of XXXX (UK), July 2011. My professional aspirations require, however, that I also hold the MS Degree in Engineering. What happens when you cross a mechanical engineer and a material engineer? Well, you get me! With parents such as mine, who both love science and their work in engineering, it was, I suppose, not surprising that I loved scientific subjects at school and excelled in them, nor that I should then develop a deep passion for engineering having been subject to accidental engineering of the genetic variety myself! My love for science during my school days developed into a passion during my university studies in Chemical Engineering which was both challenging and fascinating. I was drawn to this area of study through a wish to apply my theoretical knowledge into practical applications and especially those applications having as wide a beneficial effect as possible. I am especially interested on working to assist the food industry in the area of food stability and thus to make the world’s food stocks go further and to benefit the end consumers. It is my ultimate goal to be involved in the design of safe, secure and environmentally friendly plants for the production and processing of food products which would ‘marry’ the knowledge I have already gained with the knowledge that I seek to acquire through participation in your program. It is my hope to undertake research relating to the food industry during the program, should my application be accepted. I have had the experience of working as an intern process engineer in two companies since completing the studies towards my M.Eng. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience which has been of great value to me, not least in teaching me how chemical and mechanical engineers work together for the same ends and the relationship between the two disciplines. I am widely travelled having visited many countries including Spain, Italy, Portugal, Dubai, Canada, Malaysia and the United States. I am curious about cultures other than my own and enjoy being exposed to them. I am keen to interact with people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. I am aware that the prestigious program, for which I am applying, will attract many well qualified applicants. However I genuinely feel that I can ‘add value’ to the academic community by bringing a thoroughly diligent and committed attitude to my work, the fruits of my academic and practical experience to date and, not least, my passion for the subject. What happens when you cross a Ph.D. (Math) with an M.S. (Civil Engineering)? Well, you get me! With parents like mine I was raised, unsurprisingly, in an environment where numbers were as important as letters and where my games almost always involved numerical and logical challenges, which I loved. My parents were not only enthusiasts in their subjects but natural teachers and I was their very fortunate and eager student. Before I reached 6th grade, I had recognized the connection between math and engineering, that it was possible to discover the best solution to my three-dimensional puzzles with no more than a piece of paper and a pencil! I was thrilled by my discovery and remain enthralled by it. I specialized in science subjects as soon as possible at high school and ultimately joined the B.Sc. program at the prestigious King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals from where I graduated with honors with a degree in Industrial Systems Engineering. I was then employed at the University as a Graduate Assistant whilst undertaking studies for my Master’s degree, my research area being Optimization. I was also selected, from M.Sc. student engineers of various disciplines, to join a project to develop new optimization algorithms and techniques for resource allocation and planning for wireless network groups, this project was successfully completed. I also had four papers published arising from my M.Sc. research. Throughout my university career, I have been involved in various volunteer activities using the knowledge I acquired in my studies. For instance, because of my knowledge of optimization, I was asked to produce activity schedules for fellow students and I produced food distribution schedules following a climatic crisis and consequent shortages. I regard it as a privilege to have been able to apply my knowledge to provide practical solutions in emergency situations. I am widely travelled throughout the Middle East and Europe. I am curious about other cultures and look forward to working with people of various cultural backgrounds, learning from them and providing some insights into my own culture. Having completed my Master’s degree, I have firmly decided that I still want to know more about my subject, to extend my knowledge as far as is possible, to discover new truths about it that will be of general benefit and to ‘infect’ others with my passion. Happily, because of the standard of work done in achieving my Master’s degree, I have been awarded a full scholarship for Doctorate level studies in the U.S. and I can hardly wait to begin. It is now my hope to undertake advanced theoretical studies and research in a highly challenging and prestigious academic environment. I also look forward to being involved in helping to teach students as I intend to teach in future. I am especially interested in undertaking research in one or more of the following: applied optimization, mathematical programming, simulation, stochastic process and decision sciences. Having completed the Ph.D. it would be my goal to combine university teaching and research in Saudi Arabia in collaboration with the major companies operating there, such as ARAMCO or GE, and, in this way to be of benefit to my community. Whilst I am aware that this program will attract very many well qualified and enthusiastic applicants, it is my firm belief that I would be an excellent ‘fit’. I can offer a genuinely passionate interest in my subject and an endless curiosity about it, some experience of research, teaching and working on project teams providing real and immediate benefits to the community together with a fervent desire for new and demanding challenges.

I was raised in an impoverished home in the Philippines where education is highly valued but the funding for it is often lacking. I found a route out of my situation through a talent and passion for Mathematics that was recognized throughout my schooldays. The talent and passion was supplemented by the adoption of a thoroughly focused, committed and determined approach to my work throughout my academic career. My work was rewarded with school honors, a university scholarship, the award of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of XXXX in the Philippines, and finally an invitation to teach there. I was subsequently selected to receive sponsorship to enable me to study for a second Master’s degree in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the XXXX Institute of Technology. This degree was awarded in May 2008. Whilst studying at XXXX, I was also selected to provide teaching assistance. I was employed for thirteen years as a fully qualified instructor at the University of XXXX, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses. During this time I was also involved in various interdepartmental research projects. These projects included collaborative work with the Larenstein University of the Netherlands in implementing a Geographic Information System to the pre-selected curricula of the College of Arts and Sciences at the USC. My work on this project was the subject of the thesis for my Master’s degree. It had always been my intention to ‘give something back’ by teaching. This was in gratitude for my own academic and economic advancement which was in no small part due to the dedicated and skillful teaching that I received. However, I now seek to broaden my horizons. I feel that I have achieved much from an unpromising start, I am sure that I have made a difference to those I have taught and I have personally acquired a thorough knowledge of my subject over many years of study and research. I now seek a new challenge. I wish to apply my mathematical knowledge and skill to specific practical applications that will improve the lives of people generally, especially those who live in the impoverished circumstances that I once shared. It is for this reason that I am making my application for your program. I want to acquire the advanced training in Industrial and Systems Engineering that your program specifically offers, together with an emphasis on study and research in the areas of ’human factors’ and ergonomics. I am aware that these are areas of growing interest and that rapid advances are being made, I feel strongly that I can make a significant contribution to that work. The program fits my goals very well in that it will provide the knowledge I require to enable me to beneficially affect the lives of others economically, whilst giving full consideration to human needs and feelings. Having acquired a Ph.D. it is my intention to seek employment in my home country within either industry or a in a research institution and to bring the fruits of my study and research to bear upon economically beneficial and humanly positive applications. The volume and quality of the research work that I have undertaken in obtaining two Master’s degrees together with that undertaken in a fairly long teaching career has provided me with a very solid understanding of successful research and the techniques involved in achieving it. This significant research experience is highly relevant to a Doctorate program and I believe that this makes me an exceptional candidate for work at this level. My background also includes a significant amount of interdisciplinary research which is also a major characteristic of your Ph.D. program. This will minimize any familiarization or training necessary for my full participation in the work of the academic community. I am aware that the program will attract many well qualified applicants and that the committee will have difficult choices to make. However, I feel strongly that I can make a significant contribution to the academic community by pursuing my chosen areas of research and I can also bring some unique and useful insights to my class from my background, studies and research to date. It seems like yesterday when all my friends from the neighborhood gathered around to have a glimpse of my first Pentium machine. The arrival of my first “gaming machine,” eleven years ago, at the age of 11, was a watershed experience. Soon, my father would help me to realize how the computer is much more than just a gaming entity; how it is changing even some of the most fundamental ways in which we live. In addition to English, Hindi, and Kannada, I also share Tulu as a language with my father. It is an ancient dialect that is only spoken, the script having been lost. We hope to help recover it someday. Information systems are the sustenance of my life. I feel enormously happy to have the privilege of working in an area of such central and critical importance to human and economic development. I hope to assist humanity at large, but especially my Indian people in preparing themselves for greater levels of participation in the 21st century global economy. I long to contribute as much as I can to making the world a better place to live through automation at the same time that we generate employment opportunities. My long term goal is to lead and develop my own software firm dedicated to providing solutions through automation. I also would like very much to have the great privileges of doing research and teaching at some point in my career. I always stay very busy with several simultaneous, ongoing projects. I am application oriented and theory driven. Since I set the highest standards for myself, I fully expect to excel in your program, especially since I have an excellent academic foundation upon which to build. I have a profound love for the nature of systems that I have cultivated since childhood. My world lit up like a pinball machine when I first connected two computers through a cross wired Ethernet cable and a hub; especially when I changed the network settings and pinged the two devices together (for multiplayer gaming over lan). From that moment forward, Information system theory and application became my exclusive, permanent lifelong addiction and computer science engineering was a natural choice for my college major. I increasingly came to realize that the application of electronics in general and computers in particular were gateways for rapid induction into the future. Thus my thirst for doing substantive work on the very frontier of cutting-edge development in our field has led me to apply to your program. I would be especially honored be admitted to such a well established as a state-of-the-art institution where I will be empowered to stay abreast of the applications of tomorrow. I very much enjoyed performing a series of mini projects during my first years of undergraduate studies, mainly using c and c++ and I soon became captivated by the versatility of programming languages, bursting with entrepreneurial ambitions in the development of affordable solutions to common problems, driving progressive change. I was especially pleased to complete my degree through the development of a prepaid electricity bill payment system designed to overcome the major problems associated with the current system of billing in my home state of Karnataka. The project was divided into two parts, the client side and the server side . The client side unit would be present at the customer’s house and the server(s) at the state electricity board and other retail units spread across the city. Global System for mobile communication (GSM) was the underlying technology used. The client side implementation mainly consisted of programming the AT89S52 microcontroller using embedded C. The server side programming was done using java (JDK 6.0). Although the project was successful at implementing the required user functionality and serving the purpose it was built for (providing added advantages like reduction in power theft and meter tampering, as well as improved operational efficiencies. I still face major hurdles, however, taking my payment plan forward for the level of real world implementation. In fact, there challenges helped to inspire me to apply to your program where I will develop the skills that I will need for a lifetime of program development. I wish to pursue the M.S in Business Information Systems at XXXX University so that I will have the optimal platform for the pursuit of my dreams. My central interests lie at the intersection of information systems and the business world. I am drawn to your program in particular by your broad range of both course content and electives. My most specific interest lies in the area of databases and web and multimedia business application. My interest is so keen that all of my professors as well as my family has encouraged me to pursue graduate study in this area. My father has offered to provide the necessary financial support to realize my aspirations. I am accustomed to building teaming up with colleagues, especially those with more advanced studies than my own, on the development of projects that went above and beyond course requirements. One such project we referred to as “LOCATION HIDING”. The project was developed to protect the server-less file systems against attacks by using LocationGuard -a location hiding technique for securing overlay file systems from target file attacks. This helped me to become more familiar with network security as well as honing my programming skills. I am currently working on an android application. I have also been preparing for enrollment in your program by taking several courses online through MIT. The lectures have been exciting and deeply thought provoking. An optional course that I attended on Entrepreneurship in my engineering college taught by an IIMB professor was also a salient experience with respect to my dedication to the business world. I worked especially hard during the 6th and 7th semesters of my undergraduate studies, especially since my grandfather died. I myself became quite ill in my 7th semester to such and extent that I was unable to take several final exams. Bouncing back from this illness, however, has made me much stronger, both intellectually and emotionally. My parents played a major role in making me who I am. It was my father who inspired me to build my own full HD projector at one-tenth the cost of what was available commercially. I have a flair for technical and electronic gadgets. As an avid reader of technical magazines like DIGIT and ELECTRONICS FOR YOU, I thrive on the problem solving aspect of electronic circuits. My other interests include chess and table tennis and I have had the honor and privilege of representing my school and college in many inter-school and inter-college table tennis tournaments. I am aware of the rigors and challenges of your program; yet I believe that I have the adequate motivation, preparation and driving force to meet your rigorous requirements. I especially admire the work of Professors XXXX and XXXX. I have already been interacting with XXU students and alumni and I long to become fully engaged in the rich diversity of the XXU experience.

I was born and raised in China and now live in Fresno, California. I am fluent in both Chinese and English and am an experienced teacher. The problems apparent in the Californian educational system are, to some extent common to all systems internationally. However, in the third world countries such as my own and India for instance, education is so highly valued culturally that such problems as the educational ‘drag’ imposed by disruptive students is virtually unknown. I see this as a major problem that must be faced and cured for the benefit and progress of the majority. Peer pressure among students in underdeveloped economies is to be near, or at, the ‘top of the class’, the pressure on many students in the United States appears to be the opposite. I believe that with the training and research opportunities offered by the program and my own background and cultural experiences, I might be able to assist in the formation of useful insights into this major problem. The Californian system also has to deal with the teaching of children from multiple ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Some of the children, especially those who are of the first generation of third world heritage will share their parents’ values as to the high worth of educational opportunity whilst those from other cultural backgrounds may not. I believe that it is not impossible for ways to be found to transfer the values of one group to others by various strategies over time. I would hope to be able to ‘add value’ to the academic community by researching ways of doing so. I hold degrees in both Education and Communication and believe that this combination would be extremely useful in the program for which I am applying and also in reaching successful conclusions in my chosen areas of research. The reason for this application is basically a passionate and long held interest in education. This began during my first teaching job in China between 2002 and 2005. I have taught in both the US and China and have taught a wide variety of age groups. I am aware of some of the advantages and disadvantages of the two systems of which I have experience. I believe that I can provide useful insights in having such wide experience. The program will benefit me by giving me a strong academic underpinning in identifying areas where change is needed and in managing such changes. I have learned and demonstrated leadership skills in my tenure as Chair of the Chinese Students’ Association at Emporia. I held this post successfully for two years. I learned to delegate well and to create, organize, oversee, measure and to motivate those tasked with various projects. My classroom experiences have provided many examples of problems overcome. I have successfully dealt with problems posed by class organization, choices of teaching methods to be applied in differing circumstances and in ‘sparking’ students’ interest. Please see my comments on page 1 for examples of critical thinking on improving educational policy. In obtaining my academic qualifications to date, I have become a confident user of computers and am familiar with its application to statistical theory and other models. I undertake to apply myself fully to completing the program and will devote the majority of my time to doing so with passion and enthusiasm.

I clearly remember the moment when I realized what my calling in life was: an unexpected medical emergency with my brother heightened my awareness of the importance of acquiring proper health treatment from trained and knowledgeable health professionals. It takes only an instant for someone's life to take a complete turn when faced with a medical health issue. When a person's health is threatened it not only affects the individual it affects those around them, especially their beloved ones. Issues such as access to health care can hinder their medical needs, early diagnosis, as well as treatment. Unfortunately, it took this tragic experience along with a few others for me to truly understand that caring for others requires a tremendous amount of self-sacrifice as well as good intuition and intensive training. My younger sister Angela woke me in the middle of the night in a state of panic because my elder brother Christopher was clutching his chest in pain. I alerted my parents who then called for an ambulance, and we soon found ourselves anxiously waiting for news in the Emergency Room. I was filled with mixed emotions, on one hand, relief, and admiration for the medical staff and guilt and helplessness. I had sensed how restless my brother was the night before as his younger sister I wanted to help but could not pinpoint what was wrong. Although Christopher eventually made a full recovery, my conscience never let me forget the lesson of that night. I knew then that a career as a health professional was the only way for me to ease the pain of loved ones and others who needed medical service. Shortly after that fateful night I returned to my studies with an eagerness to become a medical health professional. I studied hard as I realized that only my determination, persistence, and knowledge would help pave my way into the future. As a result, I was among the top students in my senior biology class. My teacher nominated me as a participant in the science bowl for the Bronx High School district. From there I grew to love the natural sciences, so in Fall of 2005 I enrolled at XXXX University as a Biology major at the tender age of sixteen. This phase in my life was the most challenging, because I found myself in a completely different atmosphere, unlike my high school, learning to navigate college life with little guidance and direction. Fortunately, my years at XXXX University developed my character as well as my independence and self-reliance. With my future career in mind, I attempted to exposure myself to health care services. I volunteered at my local healthcare medical clinic for a little over a year. I can barely describe the sense of great personal satisfaction I felt when patients thanked me for listening and attending to their needs in a compassionate manner. I had never been exposed before to such a cross-section of the public, and I had worried that my youth might make it more difficult for me to understand their problems, but that was not the case. I was commended for my maturity and professionalism and those feelings of self-doubt started to fade. I was also able to upgrade my knowledge of healthcare and medical service once again while working at XXXX University Health Care clinic by booking appointments and communicating with patients under direction from two head nurse practitioners. It was also here that I was introduced to the Physician Assistant students who were completing their clinic rotations at the medical facility. Although I knew of the profession beforehand, being able to witness and work with them encouraged me to pursue this career path. In 2007, tragedy struck my family once again when my father fell ill and was diagnosed with diabetes. That same year I revisited my country of birth when my aunt died from breast cancer at the age of fifty. Much of the time spent in Nigeria during my aunt’s burial ceremony and my father's health issues reawakened many of the feelings I felt during the night of my brother's incident. Also, the conditions I witnessed of people who could not seek medical treatment while I was in Nigeria for reasons such as availability and access to medical treatment left me with feeling of distress. What I found particularly surprising was that these individuals were unable to express their need for medical care. Unlike my brother though, this was because they had lived with poor health for so long that they probably never knew what it meant to feel healthy. These experiences all coupled to strengthen my drive and determination towards pursuing the Physician Assistant profession. There is no doubt in my mind that something needs to be done to assist the helpless like the children and elders I saw in Nigeria. I was only six years old when I left Nigeria, but I have never forgotten where I came from, or the opportunities America has given me. As the old adage goes, "to whom much is given much is expected." Leaving Nigeria was a major upheaval in my life, along with the incident involving my brother Christopher and father. My core set of beliefs and values have not changed much since that time. I feel they have prepared me for whatever York College holds in store for me. I understand that being a responsible healthcare professional requires lifelong learning and I look forward to taking on this challenge with adequate training and preparation. There is an excitement that comes from accurately diagnosing and treating patients. With my background in biology, I have a strong foundation for understanding the types of information someone would acquire during formal education and training as a physician assistant. My various work and volunteer experiences has allowed me to gain the skills that I feel are necessary to become a good health care professional. For example, my participation as a student peer leader at Pace University and as a team leader at the US Census Bureau has all strengthened my leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. At present, I am assisting clients with disabilities at the Cerebral Palsy Association of New York State to manage everyday tasks and to complete assigned job duties. I am confident that my graduation from XXXX College with a Physician Assistant degree and certificate would provide the solid foundation I need to face the challenges that lie ahead. My admission to your program would help me achieve my career plan and goals. The program curriculum also gives me a chance to review and improve in the pre-requisite subject area Anatomy at it is part of the curriculum. XXXX College Physician Assistant program is also one of the shortest, most straightforward and least expensive program nationwide. This is an important consideration because I do not come from a wealthy family. I would be freer to concentrate on achieving good grades with the support of my close family, without the debt stress I faced at Pace University. I should also make special mention of the fact that the student body at XXXX College has many students like me from minority backgrounds, whom I can relate with and possible benefit from in my academic results. I am interested in returning to my native country as I hope to establish a health facility there. I know firsthand following my father and my brother’s illnesses and from the death of my aunt that seeking and having access to medical help is important. It is also unfortunate to say that many areas of my community who are underprivileged cannot easily access quality medical care. If I am able to enjoy the benefits of the education that XXXX College provides to future Physician assistants, I feel obligated to contribute to public awareness of health issues, as this is one of the greatest challenges facing poor communities. Thereafter, becoming a part of the health professional community, I plan to use my knowledge, training, and experiences to improve health care and patient outcomes in underprivileged communities.

I am a male of Turkish nationality. I am fluent in both English and Turkish. I hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering from XXXX University, Istanbul, Turkey. Since graduating, I have worked for a large company in Turkey that supplied automotive products. I have worked in several departments within the company, such as Manufacturing, Research and Development and Planning. Up to this point I was intending to create a career in Engineering but I became fascinated by the way businesses operate and the factors that separate successful businesses from those that falter. I began to read widely on business related topics especially how businesses face and deal with change. I also began to see close relationships between the way engineers take decisions and solve problems and the way that it is done in business. For instance, decisions made in an emergency situation will aim to find a temporary solution but will lead on to a decision to avoid or deal with the same problem over the long term and will result in a planned response should the problem recur. It occurred to me that my training in emergency, short and long term decision making, planning and problem solving that I had received as an engineer were directly transferable to the world of business. I have also been trained in new product design and this too seems to have direct application in business system design with the same criteria applying in both. I am quite widely travelled within Europe. I have visited England, Russia and most of the Balkan nations. I have taken an interest in the way business operates in these countries and have noted the contrasts and similarities between them, especially the differences apparent in the post-Communist states. I should be very interested in undertaking research into the ways in which culture and politics affect business decision making in order to assist companies to improve understanding and communications when undertaking international business transactions. In the ‘global economy’ this aspect of business is of increasing importance. I could undertake a course of study on the subject of business in Turkey but recognize the primacy of American universities in business education and am, anyway, keen to expose myself to American business methods and to its entrepreneurial culture so that I can apply these in my own country. I am also eager to meet and exchange opinion with students of many different cultures and backgrounds. This possibility is maximized in the United States. I am considered to be a good team member, to be hard working and mature. I am also adaptable and I am confident that I can excel in the program if I am given the opportunity to participate. Whilst I am aware that my lack of formal qualifications in a business related discipline may be regarded as disadvantageous, I do believe that my wide reading of business texts and periodicals together with my engineering background and business experience will enable me to make valuable contributions to my class and add interesting ‘ingredients’ to the ‘mix’.

I was born in Jordan. Therefore, I tend to identify with that part of the Middle East that is referred to as the Developing World. I am deeply concerned with the misery resulting from poverty throughout the poorest sectors of Middle Eastern societies. I have dreamed about being able to help for a very long time, especially since I had the good fortune to have been raised in comparatively well-developed Kuwait and then immigrate to the USA at 11. This is why I majored in economics at XXXX State University and now wish to attain my professional degree in your highly regarded program at XXU. I am Chaldean and speak Aramaic as well as reading, writing, and fluently speaking Arabic. I think in these languages as well, about our people. Thus, I want the MBA to devote my professional life to the economic development of the Middle East. Most of today’s developing countries are unaware of the impact that education has on their economic development and some countries are lacking resources due to wars and tribal clashes. Ever since I graduated with a degree in economics, I've been fascinated about the Third World and developing nations and their growth potential that they have through natural resources or industrializing. To further pursue my career goal, I am interested in applying to XXU School of Management; where the evening MBA program would enable me to meet their high level educational program at the same time excel in my current career as a fixed income bond trader at XXXX Financial. Being born and raised in the Middle East till the age of eleven, I have come to learn the languages and the culture of that region and now being a witness of the economic advancement for the countries along the Persian Gulf. I am especially concerned with those areas of the Middle East that are experiencing the greatest challenges with respect to economic growth, particularly Iraq, Syria, Iran, and Palestine. Through my education at XXU and my experience in finance along with a number of international agencies, we as educators need to educate the world’s kids for tomorrow, with peace and prosperity to that region. Meanwhile, to make change locally, some college friends and I have set up a non-profit organization called Power of Change. Our goal is create positive change in the lives of underprivileged children in any way possible. We set up our foundation to function as a feeder organization, meaning we donate all the funds raised to other non-profit organization which are operating in underprivileged communities. We have organized a number of events which has helped us raise over $10,000 which were later used to buy diapers and baby formula. Our board members are dedicated young professionals that have a vision of a world without poverty. My professional strength serve as the most importance to my career that I am a team player with honest, integrity, and a strong work ethic. I hold the highest ethical and professional standards and put great emphasis to corporate challenges and exploration. Once I attain my MBA from XXU I plan to join forces with the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, or the World Bank to fight with their challenges with developing nations. I am a male of Turkish nationality. I am fluent in both English and Turkish. I hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering from XXXX University, Istanbul, Turkey. Since graduating, I have worked for a large company in Turkey that supplied automotive products. I have worked in several departments within the company, such as Manufacturing, Research and Development and Planning. Up to this point I was intending to create a career in Engineering but I became fascinated by the way businesses operate and the factors that separate successful businesses from those that falter. I began to read widely on business related topics especially how businesses face and deal with change. I also began to see close relationships between the way engineers take decisions and solve problems and the way that it is done in business. For instance, decisions made in an emergency situation will aim to find a temporary solution but will lead on to a decision to avoid or deal with the same problem over the long term and will result in a planned response should the problem recur. It occurred to me that my training in emergency, short and long term decision making, planning and problem solving that I had received as an engineer were directly transferable to the world of business. I have also been trained in new product design and this too seems to have direct application in business system design with the same criteria applying in both. I am quite widely travelled within Europe. I have visited England, Russia and most of the Balkan nations. I have taken an interest in the way business operates in these countries and have noted the contrasts and similarities between them, especially the differences apparent in the post-Communist states. I should be very interested in undertaking research into the ways in which culture and politics affect business decision making in order to assist companies to improve understanding and communications when undertaking international business transactions. In the ‘global economy’ this aspect of business is of increasing importance. I could undertake a course of study on the subject of business in Turkey but recognize the primacy of American universities in business education and am, anyway, keen to expose myself to American business methods and to its entrepreneurial culture so that I can apply these in my own country. I am also eager to meet and exchange opinion with students of many different cultures and backgrounds. This possibility is maximized in the United States. I am considered to be a good team member, to be hard working and mature. I am also adaptable and I am confident that I can excel in the program if I am given the opportunity to participate. Whilst I am aware that my lack of formal qualifications in a business related discipline may be regarded as disadvantageous, I do believe that my wide reading of business texts and periodicals together with my engineering background and business experience will enable me to make valuable contributions to my class and add interesting ‘ingredients’ to the ‘mix’.

I wish to enroll in the doctoral program in Transportation and Logistics at XXXX State University because there is a real need in my country to improve the supply chain of natural resources such as petroleum and mineral resources. At present, Saudi Arabia's problem is that too much private investment has created monopolies, rather than encouraged the healthy competition that drives innovation. In many respects, I see this situation as the opposite of the progressive trend I have observed in the United States, since arriving here in 2008. I therefore envision the Saudi government playing a greater part in the regulation of the natural resources sector, which is why I aspire to one day becoming The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. Of course, I realize it is impossible for any person to single handedly bring about a complete reform of the supply chain, irrespective of the merit of the respective policies. Real change has to be generated from below, which is why I would, in the first instance, use my studies to obtain a university teaching position, with a focus on Accounting, Economics, and logistic and supply chains. One of the strategic points I would emphasize to students is that the correct usage of information technology is especially important because it can help lower the entry costs in the supply chain by facilitating appropriate planning and thereby preventing the unnecessary waste of precious resources that usually results whenever there is a monopoly. I believe that once these measures have been implemented on a sufficient economy of scale, the Saudi government will feel more inclined to invest in public infrastructure, such as roads, to help facilitate the greater number of logistical supply chains that will open up, once the entry barriers to the petroleum and mineral resources industries have been lowered. In addition to what I have observed in the United States, I feel my optimism is justified because I have worked for the Saudi Electric Company, where my responsibility was to analyze government accounts. This experience helped me develop a very good understanding of how and why the government allocates its expenditure in the way that it does. In addition to these analytical abilities, I count myself fortunate because I possess the communication skills that should enable me to act as a mediator between the private and public sectors. I had an opportunity to hone these skills upon receipt of a scholarship from the Ministry of Education. By combining these analytical and communicative skills, I hope to play a constructive role by helping ensure that suppliers and customers understand one another and stand to mutually benefit from improved product fulfillment. As a supply chain manager, it would be my job to plan procurement, inventory control, logistics, distribution, vendor management, cost reduction, and overall improvement to the process as a whole. I am confident that I already possess the system knowledge that will be required to implement these reforms, having learnt Accounting, Information Systems and data management using SPSS and SQL server. Following graduation, I am also interested in using my research to improve the global supply chain. Becoming a CEO in the largest petrochemical company in my country would be particularly useful in this respect, as it would present an opportunity to share ideas and build working relationships. To my knowledge, few Saudis have graduated with a supply chain major. There is therefore a lot of scope for policy and educational innovation in my country. In order to benefit though, it is important to choose the right program in Logistics and Supply Chain Systems. I can identify the work of two researchers that is of particular interest to my needs. Professor David K. Lambert, who teaches in the faculty of Agribusiness and Applied Economics, has developed an interesting focus on Agribusiness and Applied Economics that is clearly pertinent to what I have said about how monopolistic behavior stifles competition. My thinking on these matters is influenced by his observations on how the control of the supply chain creates a monopoly on buying and selling power, which in the case of agriculture that Lambert uses to illustrate this general point, places a burden on farmers. The joint ownership of land and livestock contractually obligates these farmers into buying and selling only to the company. This creates a situation that could almost be described as "feudal", insofar as the farmers become dependent employees on their own farms, rather than entrepreneurs. Another unfortunate side effect, as can be inferred from Lambert's work, is that multinational enterprises can outsource their operations to other countries in search of cheaper labor, in addition to lower environmental standards. In light of this evidence, I would attempt to do everything in my power to ensure that a correct balance could be found between the nationalization and the globalization of Saudi Arabia's natural resources industries. I see foreign competitors as necessary for my country's future development because they will tend to lift the productivity of local producers and can encourage investment flows that can foster technological improvements, in addition to promoting skill upgrades, along with better methods and standards. I am also interested in the work of Assistant Professor XXXX, who teaches in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering. Her research concerns two areas I wish to develop my knowledge of: Supply Chain Management (with an emphasis on Models and Methodologies of Stochastic Optimization) and Manufacturing and Logistics (with an emphasis on Healthcare Engineering, Scheduling Department). Briefly stated, I foresee many practical applications for her modeling of risk management in Saudi Arabia's natural resources industries. For example, she has carefully distinguished between two types of risks: inherent and exogenous. While the former relates to intrinsic organizational uncertainties, such as lead-time, the latter encompasses disruptions that are natural or manmade. I regard manmade uncertainties as a problem that requires careful attention insofar as it can refer to terrorism as well as environmental degradation arising from the overexploitation of resources. Such uncertainties can obviously greatly affect the performance of a supply chain. The problem as I see it is that the Saudi government risks compounding the risk of such problems through their monopolistic behavior, whereas Zhang demonstrates the benefits of adopting a more plural model that is more capable of minimizing any disruptive effects because it distributes costs among partners in the supply chain. If I am able to enroll in your program then, I will endeavor to use the skills and knowledge I will obtain to reform supply chain management in my country for the benefit of the Saudi people. I am applying for the XXX Scholarship to study Mandarin language and chemistry at the XXXX University in Hong Kong. Since Hong Kong is now part of China—the principal gateway where East meets West meet in Asia—I will have the opportunity to learn a great deal about Chinese language, culture, society, and politics. This will prepare me professionally to contribute to the advancement and preservation of America’s national security interest because China is now a superpower that is widely seen as having the potential to surpass America in military strength within only a few decades. I am convinced that my chosen field of study, chemistry, will also be of critical importance to our national security interests over the long term since chemistry is one of the principal foundations of scientific and economic advancement, as well as being of instrumental importance to the development of weapons systems and security concerns. I am scheduled to graduate from XXXX College with a degree in chemistry in 2012; but, if chosen for your program and given the opportunity to study in Hong Kong for one year, I will graduate in 2013. Mandarin language studies are not offered at Georgetown College. Thus, the Boren Scholarship will enable me to develop language skills critical to my contribution to America’s national security. This is especially important since Mandarin Chinese is widely thought to be on track to become the world’s dominant language of the future, second, perhaps, only to English. I currently speak Spanish, also a widely used international language. Thus, I am convinced that mastery of both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese will provide me with the optimal platform for developing the academic foundation that will be most conducive to my future service of my country in the area of national security. I have chosen to study in Hong Kong for a variety of reasons all of which are related to my long term desire to become a professional in the area of national security. Hong Kong is one of the most advanced societies in the world. It is where China has especially distinguished itself in scientific and economic development because of the long and sustained Western influence that has gone on for centuries. It has one of the world’s most advanced economies and its universities are especially distinguished in the area of the physical sciences. Thus, it represents the optimal location for me to receive the finest of education in both Chinese language and science, based on a mixture of modern and ancient traditions. The Chinese people are extremely diverse and multicultural, consisting of 56 different ethnicities. As a result, my studies in Hong Kong would also greatly advance my understanding of and appreciation for diversity and multiculturalism. I would also develop a keen sense of many of the intricacies of Chinese/Western relations and would be in a critically important position to observe and learn about many of the issues that will be of especially critical importance to the future of US/Chinese relationship: democracy, human rights, trade, international business, and the ongoing influence of the US in terms of the development of China’s relationships with its Asian neighbors, particularly Japan and the two Koreas. As a center or Asian commerce, I will be able to closely observe the way in which Hong Kong represents a center of Asian communication, not just with the above countries, but all of Asia: Thailand, Vietnam, even India and Russia. I would have the opportunity to become a fully international student and to develop a keen appreciation for the numerous ways in which America’s security is determined by our relationship with the entire world, especially Asia, as this security relates to economic and scientific development as well as academic, scientific, and business exchanges. I feel that I am a strong candidate for this study abroad opportunity because I have been fascinated with Asian culture since I was a child learning to help my parents prepare Asian dishes: sushi, rice bowls and steamed vegetables from a bamboo cooker. Later, I took cooking classes taught by Asian chefs. In a city that mixes the new with the old, I will learn so much about cultural as well as political history and benefit from the great inspiration to be found standing in the presence of the Great Wall of China. I have overcome many obstacle that have helped me to greatly mature for my age. I have a two-year-old little boy who has helped me to grow up fast by assuming the responsibilities of parenthood while still a teenager. This experience inspired me to focus on my studies and long term goals. As a result of my good grades and rigorous course of study, I am on track to receive a Harper Gatton Leadership Medallion upon graduation. I am working hard to prepare myself for leadership roles in the future. In fact, I co-founded a male organization called M.A.L.E. 8 for this purpose and I have learned how to write grant proposals to secure funding. Participation in our Global Scholar Program has introduced me to different cultures and helped me to understand how globalization is important to our development as a unified world. I have advanced computer skills and have practiced skills in writing newsletters. I am avidly engaged at increasing my spirituality and helping other teenagers to cope with parenthood, helping to prepare them to attend and graduate from college. Receiving the XXXX Scholarship and having the invaluable opportunity to study in Hong Kong will prepare me to utilize my training in chemistry to fight terrorism, especially by through the development of my abilities to contribute to scientific and economic advancement so that China and the US might continue to develop greater levels of cooperation and collaboration in addressing the root causes of terrorism, poverty, hunger, inadequate education. I want to help find curses for diseases and to better understand why and how diseases develop in the first place. I want to work in the development of clean energy so as to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels at the same time that we care for our mother earth. By simultaneously buying less oil from the Middle East, there will be less need to spend America’s money on weapons systems. At the same time, we can fight against global warming, one of the most prominent threats to our long term security. I have chosen Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) to continue my studies because they offer chemistry and language courses that are not offered at XXXX College. Their program focuses on analytical and environmental chemistry and they offer classes in instrumental analysis with laboratory, environmental, and industrial components. My academic course plan is as follows: Analytical Chemistry 1 with Lab, Integrated Chemistry Tutorials II and III, Biochemistry, Mandarin I and II, Instrumental Analysis with Lab, and Polymer Chemistry. HKXX focuses their chemistry programs in the area of Environmental as well as Analytical Chemistry and I am especially interested in environmental issues. I hope to have a lifelong share in the work of building greater collaboration between these two great superpowers, China and the US, so that we might be better equipped to meet the vast challenges that we face as a global society in the preservation of our planetary home. HKXX offers integrated chemistry tutorials, something that is not offered in my own undergraduate program. These tutorials enable students to engage in small group discussions and find solutions to real-life problems. Tutorials II and III, in particular, are geared towards my areas of greatest. These courses will vastly increase my knowledge and enable me to make rapid and sustained advancements in my academic preparation in such a way that I will be able to lay the optimal foundation for better understanding national security issues, especially the development of new energy sources, issues in chemical weaponry, and, in particular, ways to survive exposure to nuclear radiation. I long to participate in HKXX’s Study Abroad Program for the multicultural experience, enhanced by the fact that students are housed with local Chinese students, sharing common areas for music/TV, recreation, karaoke, computer/Internet, exercise, study, and laundry. They also provide one LAN point connection to the University’s network system. The program also provides extensive academic support and guidance to as to enhance communication between foreign/exchange and local students which helps to foster a sense of community and “belonging” within the University environment. They encourage incoming student’s involvement in all aspects of university life. Their East-West Encounters program forms local and non-local students into groups with student ambassadors who facilitate the exchange students becoming familiar with local cultures, customs and traditions. Activities include a one week orientation program, bi-weekly gatherings at the Global Café, a city tour, and regular monthly activities such as visiting sites of historical value and museums, and finally, a farewell party. Some of the monthly activities involve visiting historical places or museums. I would experience first-hand cultural experiences such as major festivals, Chinese New Year, the mid-autumn or lantern festival, and the dragon boat festival. Finally, being selected for your program would allow me to make life-long friendships with local and other exchange students. This environment will give me the opportunity to practice speaking the Mandarin language with local students and other students studying the language. The East-West and Student Affairs programs will give the opportunity to see China and learn about Mandarin history; and I have developed a plan to continue speaking and learning Mandarin once I return to the states since I already have a conversational partner lined up to continue speaking Mandarin with me in Lexington, Ky, along with a fellow Global Scholar on Georgetown College campus. I have another Chinese language partner lined up near my home in Edwardsville, IL . Currently, I am labeling everything in my dorm room in Mandarin. If selected for your program, I will also make my email signature bilingual, Mandarin/English. China is especially distinguished for its educational advancement in the areas of mathematics, the physical sciences, engineering and medicine. Graduates from Chinese programs of higher education are especially well received by leading universities around the world as well as well as leading international corporations. The Hong Kong Baptist University offers world-class laboratories and cutting-edge instruction in Chemistry on both theoretical and applied levels. Thus, if honored by being a recipient of the Boren Scholarship, I will have the opportunity to live and interact with some of the most advanced and best educated Chinese people in the world and to fully immerse myself in Chinese culture and society as well as language. I will have the opportunity to develop new ways of visualizing the world and its problems: through Chinese eyes. I will be able to develop an advanced understanding of the special concerns of the Chinese people, the challenges that they face, and the obstacles that present themselves to advanced collaboration with the West. I will be able to better understand the history of Western/Chinese relationships and how this history continues to influence both the myriad tensions that exist between China and the West as well as the myriad opportunities that exist for overcoming these tensions and building new opportunities for increasing collaboration. As a result of the historical tensions and rivalries that result from the Cold War and historical antagonisms between Capitalism, on the one hand, and Communism, on the other, there remains much work to be done in building bridges between America and China. Your scholarship program would provide me with the key foundation for building a long and distinguished career as a Chinese specialist in the critically important area of Chemistry and the wide array of issues and challenges that present themselves in this area, with its numerous applications from sustainable development issues to questions of chemical weapons systems. I look forward to developing a better understanding of the physio-chemical and biological bases of various environmental problems and our search for solutions, especially since the department operates an environmental monitoring station along with chemical testing and science consultancy services, none of which are offered at Georgetown college. They also have equipment that I can learn how to use that is not present at Georgetown college, such as gigh-field superconducting NMR and EIR spectrometers, a Luminescence Lifetime spectrometer, etc. In fact, the department is equipped with a broad range of cutting-edge instruments for state-of-the-art research. I am currently being mentored by an FBI agent and I am tailoring my academic study program so as to be of value to our Homeland Security Department in the future. Thus, learning to speak Mandarin Chinese and learning all that I can about China is of central importance to my long term goal of using my training in Chemistry in the fight against terrorism and to help our security forces to cope more effectively with the many challenges that they face. I intend to continue my studies in forensic and pharmaceutical medicine and as well as international affairs. I dream of helping to develop an antidote for nerve gas and to work in the area of preparation for surviving exposure to nuclear radiation. I keenly look forward to classes in environmental chemistry so as to prepare me to make important contributions in the areas of sustainable development and the global fight against disease. Learning Mandarin Chinese and everything that I can about the Chinese people will prove highly complementary to my career in chemistry and help to prepare me for a career in national security with HS or the FBI. I will have the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international challenges. In addition to the critical importance of China to our national security of Chinese-US relations, this program will also prepare me to help meet the critical threat to our national security represented by environmental degradation and the long term consequences of industrial pollution so pronounced in China.
