Masters Criminology, Black Football Player While I graduated from XXXX University in May of 2013 with my undergraduate degree in Criminology, I received a full athletic scholarship for 4 years and continued to play football through December of 2013. Winning the Big 12 Conference’s Player of the Week Award for XXU’s NCAA Division 1 Football Team in September of 2013 was an especially sweet, crowning achievement. I was not, however, drafted by the NFL. Thus, football is over for me since I have no interest in a professional career in sports except as an athlete. Now, therefore, I want to score points with my mind rather than my body and I am equally determined to succeed and excel. A young African-American man, my father is a minister and he has been very influential in my life as a role model, particularly his deep commitment to our community. He has always struggled to instill in me a profound appreciation for moral and ethical values and the importance of making a contribution to our society, especially our fellow African-Americans. This is the primary reason why I was inspired to complete my undergraduate studies in Criminology, with a minor in American Ethics, to prepare myself to contribute to the achievement of greater levels of social justice in America of tomorrow, especially for African-Americans whose presence in the criminal justice system has always been grossly disproportionate, ever since they were first freed from slavery and began to be incarcerated in large numbers (rather than lynched—especially in the south, where I am from). This is not to say that I have excelled as a student of either history or social issues. Frankly, my college years were very much dominated by excelling as a football player and my grades suffered. Still, I never lost my idealistic sense of wanting to make a contribution as a social activist, organizer, and/or administrator in the future in an area where I can work to enhance social justice, particularly for young people from ethnic minority communities being processed by the criminal justice system. I want to struggle to keep young black people, especially boys, to stay out of the justice system to begin with, and once there, to do all that I can to assure that the treatment they receive is just and fair. I hope to support myself and the family that I anticipate having someday and to be a good father myself; and to serve as a good role model, especially for African-American boys who tend to look up to football players. Since this past August, 2014, I have been working for my local government, serving as a District Coordinator for the City of XXXX Texas. While I am responsible for core business operations within my defined geographical (North Gate) district, most of my efforts and energy are devoted to ensuring traffic safety on a day-by-day basis, which gives me the opportunity to interact with many members of my community, which I very much enjoy. Masters Electrical Engineering, Chinese Applicant The gorgeous light as well as the beautiful melody deeply fascinated me. The electronic building block seemed to have a magic power to me when I was a small child. I remember spending hours pouring over the little blueprints that came with my toy and then constructing different circuits. That may have been my first experience of engineering and it has been engraved in my mind ever since. I have always had an interest in the way things work and science has always been one of my favorite subjects. My intense passion for the sciences, particularly physics and mathematics, has increased exponentially as I have advanced in school and I particularly enjoy the challenge of using science and mathematics to solve everyday problems. I earned a score in the top 1% on the Chinese National University Entrance Examination and began my studies in environmental engineering. Soon, however, I realized that my true calling as an engineer was in the area of optical information science and technology. For me, this area represents a perfect combination of theory in physics and mathematics with the most exciting of practical applications. So, I transferred to this major for the balance of my studies. My grades steadily increased along with my passion for my studies and I finished with a GPA of 3.7 To enhance my research skills and better prepare myself for graduate school, I have been working as a research assistant since last year in the State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies. We are studying minimal spatial scale light fields, their interaction with microstructure as well as their applications for super-resolution imaging. Our research project is part of the China’s State Key Program for Basic Research. We have made particularly exceptional progress in the generation, manipulation, and focusing properties of cylindrical vector beams.We constructed an experimental setup based on the use of the near field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) in order to better study the focusing properties of radically and azimuthally polarized beams under high NA objective lens. We measured the focal spot size using the knife edge method. We were highly successful in our observations of a focal spot of the radically polarized beams, including their spatial size breaks and diffraction resolution limits. We were also able to confirm the donut shape of the electric field of a tightly focused azimuthally polarized beam. At the same time, we also constructed an experiment setup in the far field. This setup is aimed at generating arbitrary vector beams with a spatial light modulator (SLM). Unfortunately, we have several problems with the setup which limit its value for further research and application. Although we solved some of the problems, the remaining ones, related to the complicated setup design and limitations of experimental conditions, still made the scheme infeasible. Currently, I am independently engaged in the construction of a new experimental setup under the teacher’s guidance. We are hopeful that the new experimental setup will overcome the shortcomings of the previous one. In addition to my academic studies, I have long been involved in various extracurricular activities. I was one of the First Violins with the Sun Yat-sen University Symphony Orchestra and performed on numerous occasions. I was especially proud that we won the championship during the Students’ Association of SYSU Finals. I have studied in France as well and I continue to make progress in French since it is the other principal international language of my target location: Africa. Recently, we realized a notable feat with the adoption by the ECOWAS Heads of Authority and Government of an ECOWAS biometric ID card for mobility of ECOWAS community citizens across borders in the ECOWAS region. Along with a team of experts, I am currently in the process of implementing key actions within the project ranging from the development of a regional database platform for data exchange on traveler identification, to harmonization of immigration procedures, high level advocacy and sensitization exercises, along with the production of a secure biometric ID specimen acceptable to all Member States. The accomplishment of this objective would foster free movement of goods, people and services in the region and thereby combat irregular mobility, harassment at the borders, boosting trade within the region at the same time. We have managed to organize various seminars and fundraising events, and are currently working on building a fully equipped Cancer Center. I am a member of Amnesty International, and have participated in various projects such as arms control campaigns. I also participated in protests and signed petitions, helping to create awareness by giving a presentation on the need for greater progress in arms control at the Diplomatic Academy and at a youth’s seminar in Lagos, Nigeria. Most recently, my work with WACO involved social and local mobilisation to aid Ebola victims in Liberia. Through the use of social media and outreach programmes, I and a team of friends mobilised the donation of clothes, wash kits and financial aid to support countries plagued by the epidemic. I recently joined St. Vincent de Paul Society in honour of my late mother. It has been quite a rewarding experience helping people first hand who are confronted with various challenges. My own experiences have humbled me and further strengthened my belief that every human has a right to justice and an inalienable right to explore their own potential, making the most of their gifts in the way that they so choose. A dentist from India, a woman and most of all a mother, I was six months pregnant with my daughter when I learned that I was accepted to the dental program at XXXX. While I was elated, it turned out to be disastrous timing. My pregnancy had been very complicated and I began dental school fearing that I was going to lose my baby. I had previously suffered a miscarriage and so much rode on this pregnancy that the stress levels during my first two months studying at XXXX International Dentist Program were enormous. My daughter was born quite ill and the fear of losing her continued during her first two months of life. My mother-in-law, who was helping me with my baby, unexpectedly fractured her arm after only a few weeks after I began dental school, just when I needed her the most because my new-born was still quite ill. Stress-related complications became so acute that my judgment became clouded and I became disoriented, sleepless, crying, a total mess of anxiety, all while struggling day and night to care for my baby. At this moment, unaware that all I needed to do was to tell my faculty advisor that I needed to take the first semester off, out of desperation to meet a deadline, I submitted research work that was not entirely my own and was expelled from the ID Program at XXXX - my appeal was denied. Since this incident, I have engaged in much self-reflection. Why did this happen? What I was thinking back then? I have worked on handling pressure and unexpected challenges and learning how to time manage in more mature ways, attending counseling sessions and doing meditation. I learned that my biggest shortcoming was my failure to discuss my problems with others; instead, keeping them bottled up inside. My daughter is getting bigger and more independent day by day, breastfeeding is drawing to a close and I hunger deep in my heart for a return to full time dentistry, the full pursuit of my profession, my life. If accepted to your DDS for International Dentists Program, I intend to leave my daughter with my mother in India so that I will be able to focus exclusively on my studies in dentistry.. I envision having a professional engagement with dentistry for the rest of my life, both here in the USA as well as back home in India, with the latter efforts being of a voluntary nature. I hope to largely fund and manage a practice geared towards the underserved in India, based on my success here in the USA, where I also look forward to decades in private practice, flying back and forth; I love to fly. There is no insurance system for dental care in India and dental treatment is simply unaffordable for roughly half the population. When I am an older woman, I also look forward to teaching dentistry in India. I have long had a fascination with and profound concern for homeless people. I would hug and kiss them as a little girl sometimes, just finding them alone on the street. Now, as a dentist, I realize that my childhood dream of finding them a place to live, to sleep, is overshadowed still by the joy that I feel providing them with oral health care. If one has a toothache, where one sleeps is of secondary importance. My city, Punjab, back in India, has enormous problems with drug addicted youth, in particular, who live on the street – most of them children and adolescents. I day dream about putting my DDS to work on their behalf if I am granted the exception for which I plead and given another chance to prove myself in a DDS program for international dentists. I have served my community as an oral health professional for more than five years, mostly in India but also here in the USA working as a dental assistant for long periods of time at several dental clinics. I have helped to effectively treat a broad variety of patients and I have also had a share in treatment planning and diagnosis. I especially look forward to research in dental materials, always with an eye towards cost and the development of materials that make dental care more affordable. I always wanted to do something in my life which moves people, leaving a long-lasting and highly positive impact on their lives. I was perhaps most moved as a child when I got my own teeth fixed and the result was my own smile – hitherto my biggest insecurity. She came to me to talk about the Diabetes Prevention Program Outcomes Study (DPPOS), a national NIH project that I work on and serve on the writing group. Over the course of the next few months, we would continue to talk about our research, comparing notes, in particular, about metformin and ongoing studies of its potential to delay the onset of diabetes. I also served as XXXX’s preceptor for her internship practicum in our diabetes program in Rwanda this past summer. I was struck by her high level of devotion to her work, her acumen with both patients and in the lab, which resulted in her immaculate and creative 9-page internship report that she sent me after her field experience was concluded. The document was entitled: “Exploring strategies of sustainability for the program of Life for a Child (LFAC) in Rwanda.” The proposals suggested by XXXX for the achievement of long-term sustainability for our program were especially impressive. We worked closely together for about 5 weeks, along with the other members of our team and Rwandan patients with Type 1 Diabetes. My decision to pursue a Master’s degree in this discipline results from a deeply felt desire to make a positive difference in the lives of children. I believe that the substantial child related voluntary activities that I have undertaken together with the success that I have enjoyed in my undergraduate psychology studies, involvement in research work and continuing informal study in the subject have provided a very firm foundation for my successful involvement in the program. I have always felt an affinity for children and had a general understanding of the immense importance of early experiences in shaping adult behavior. However my passion to study child-centered psychology was really fired during the second year of my undergraduate studies during the Child Developmental course. I watched a one year old child repeatedly throwing a spoon on the floor and observed the concentration and interest etched on his tiny face as he analyzed the relationship between the causes and effects involved. I was as fascinated by him and his reactions just as much as he was by watching the spoon arc through the air before it struck the floor each time. I realized that I was watching an experiment being successfully conducted by a tiny infant and felt enthralled as well as privileged to be a witness to it. I also understood that just as one care giver might consider this action in the same light as I did, another might regard it as irritating and pointless behavior and that this difference in understanding and attitude would have an effect on the child’s next ‘experiment’ and the results could be pivotal to the child’s whole future development and outlook. I was ‘hooked’ and a determination to study the subject was fired and I have not wavered in that decision since. Another aspect of developmental studies that particularly fascinated me involves the dramatic effects on a child arising from the quality of his/her relationship with caregivers. The importance of security and consistency of care provision in the shaping of a child’s positive self image, promotion of emotional stability and consequent success in relationships, academic achievement and general well being can hardly be overstated, as has been demonstrated in so many studies. If we can persuade a sufficient number of deficient caregivers of the long term effects of their relationship and attitude to the child, we can go some way to improving society as well as the life of the individual child. My interest in the subject has deepened in the time since I made my initial decision and I carefully read the latest published research on the subject. For instance I have just become aware of very recent research demonstrating that a child who has been bullied by a sibling is between two and four times more likely to be bullied in school. The role of siblings on child development has perhaps not been fully explored and is an area in which further fruitful research might be undertaken and I would love to be involved in doing so. I am also fascinated by the fact that the ‘nature versus nurture’ debate still continues. Though I tend towards the ‘tabla rasa’ theory, I remain open- minded and look forward to the day when research resolves the issue and we can see how practice can be amended to take account of the outcome. I concluded, some time ago, that there were few subjects as worthy of study and research as developmental psychology. One of my life aims has always been to ‘add to the sum of human happiness’ and I cannot see any better way than by pursuing studies, research and practical involvement in this vital subject.
