When I entered into Nursing Education, I envisioned direct patient contact, and a chance to help patients be active participants in the healing process. My passion for my work was more than just youthful energy, or idealism, I truly believed and still believe in the effectiveness of patient teaching. For three years as a professional RN, I wrestled with my desire to impact patients’ level of involvement in their own health, and on the other hand, drew from a Nursing education that only briefly touched upon learning theory. Moreover, there are many practical concerns, such as nurse shortages, challenging caseloads, realities that leave little time for patient teaching. Taking time away from my Nursing career, and raising a child, I kept active, operating my own home-based business. In truth, I have had a great deal of time to reassess my life’s path, and decided that Health Studies was a choice that spoke to who I am, a better fit for how I want to serve the community. Moreover, I want to be a role model for my child, to show that you must always pursue your dreams, and that with hard work and faith, you can achieve them and more. Becoming a Certified Health Education Specialist has become my goal, indeed, my dream. Nurses do share knowledge, however, through the Graduate Health Studies program, I will be better equipped to empower and spark patients’ inspiration to make positive, sustainable changes in their lives. More specifically, I am eager to increase my depth of understanding of not just health promotion, but also Diabetes prevention. Upon earning my CHES, I anticipate offering my services within a non-profit or state agency, actively engaged in the design, implementation and evaluation of community health and wellness programs. To prepare for the opportunity and challenge of the Health Studies Program, I have been working this past year as a Health Screener for Summit Health and have enjoyed the preventative medicine approach of the job. Where I feel the work falls short is in the lack of follow-up on assessment, how the screening and counseling has affected a person’s overall health, as well as a lack of applying theories of learning to meet the unique needs of individuals and specific groups, such as Spanish speakers. Indeed, growing up in Laredo, Texas, in a bilingual family, and largely Latino community, I am fluent in not only Spanish, but also the Hispanic/Latino-American experience, making me more sympathetic to the specific needs of this growing demographic. I bring with me to the Health Studies program, professional healthcare experiences as well as a solid foundation in Nursing education and current Health Studies BS. Health Studies has proven that I also enjoy and am proficient in researching and writing about health and wellness. Additionally, as an effective RN, I worked within multidisciplinary medical teams, a skill and love of teamwork that will translate well to the graduate program, one in which I anticipate many opportunities for collaboration and projects. As a part of my BSN, I participated in a community Diabetes awareness health fair. Something within me changed that day. As I answered visitors’ questions and shared foot-care information, I was not just practicing my ability to “translate” medical jargon into language people are more familiar with, I was making a difference, so much so that afterwards I continued volunteering in other health fairs, well beyond what was required of my academic program. As a working mom, I appreciate the convenience of UX’s online Health Studies program. While study time would have been harder to come by in a traditional format, I have made arrangements in my life that accommodate my pursuit of further development. For ten years, I have been away from my true calling. What began as a fixation, an entrepreneurial idea, starting a career as a Purchaser in the manufacturing field has become unchallenging, and unfulfilling. While being a Purchaser has provided a stable life, I always knew that my heart is where it always has been: in the field of Criminology. The opportunity and challenge of UXX’s MACJA program will allow me to bring my career goals, in truth my dreams, to fruition. What is more, my academic foundation in Criminology piqued and developed my intense interest in the more theoretical aspects of how the science relates to particular classes of people and the related crimes thereof. More specifically, I have seen a distinct need for quality research into the areas of criminological theory, and the causal relationships between different sub-classes of people within society, as well as testing causation in Criminological research, and how social relations affect criminality. Post-graduation, I envision building my exposure in the field whilst pursuing a Ph.D., in order to teach as well as conduct further research. For this, I will first need to increase my depth of understanding of the psychological aspects associated with the criminal minds of criminal offenders. Turning to UXX and the MACJA program is therefore more than just a logical choice, but also a natural choice given my profound passion for these topics. What better way to bring Criminology to life for my future students than to bring practical, contemporary research and examples into the classroom? Furthermore, my professional work to date has not allowed for giving back to the community in terms of volunteerism, a fact that I have wrestled with for some time, a fact that I am intent upon changing. I bring with me to the student body and graduate program an excellent grounding in Criminal Justice coupled with formal IT education. The role of IT in the field of Criminology and research has become requisite for all involved, and I feel I have proven my ability. What is more, I am a mature student, one who is certain of his future, ability and proven capability to succeed in an academic program as well as the responsibilities of professional work, serving the needs of large-scale companies. For my part, I strongly feel that research in Criminology – its future – remains firmly in its ability to discover ways of predicting and predetermining, based on the conjunction of sociological and other pertinent factors a person’s propensity for falling into socially deviant behaviors. The ideal would be to responsibly use these methods for helping at-risk persons from falling into despair and then crime, a preventative measure, rather than a curative. In the past, and in frustratingly clear hindsight, we lament those that have fallen through societal cracks, and held up precious few examples of those we have helped. Through my research, I aim to equip law enforcement with new skills, and abilities. Just as our officers are supplied with the equipment they need to enforce the law, the researcher, through their contributions give insights, skills and abilities that are equally indispensable. For almost a decade, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my education, volunteerism and career, an unswerving path to the highest level of education possible in TL. Giving my time, energy, and all that I am to my work in logistics (transportation) and supply chain management, I have only been left wanting to give more. I feel I have exhausted every path of opportunity and challenge at my current educational level. While I have an excellent grasp of the basics and processes from a business point of view, I am eager to increase my depth of understanding and bring a number of my personal and professional goals – my dreams – to reality. Turning to XXU and the Masters’s TL program is more than a logical choice given my education and exposure in the field, it is a natural choice as per my sensibilities and passion for what TL truly represents, namely social engineering. Moreover, working in India as well as the US for Kubota Tractor as an SAP consultant in logistics and supply chain management has proven that I am exactly where I need to be. More specifically, my work has shown me that there is a distinct and growing need for quality research and qualified leadership in TL, particularly in the optimal use of newer technologies such as RFID. Earning my MS in TL will enable me to be on the cutting edge of TL leadership, offering my services for firms or companies as well as teaching tomorrow’s leaders, at least part-time. As a young woman determined to carve out my professional space in Saudi Arabian society, I fully intend to have a successful career in business and finance. I am keenly aware of the many issues, and challenges women face in one of the world’s most patriarchal countries. I am also mindful of and sensitive that I am privileged to have gotten this far in my academic career. I see my modest success mirroring all women's struggles in Saudi Arabia against the backdrop of history wherein women have almost always been relegated to the sphere of family duty. The pressure to conform and to live out our lives without complaining or resisting the discrimination to which we are subject is immensebolstereded by many centuries of sexist tradition designed and put into place to restrict our freedom. I want to use the hard lessons I have learned through my own experience to begin a journey, pursue my calling, and find my place in society in such a way as to benefit Saudi women in general. I hope to have the profound privilege of giving every ounce and fiber of my being to my studies at Berkeley because everything for me is at sta; my ability to help the women in my country will be determined by the strength of the effort that I make. Thus, I feehighlyly confident that I will be able to excel because of my self-understanding: that I am not doing this just for myself or even my family, but for Saudi women as a whole, preparing myself for a lifetime of labor on behalf of the cause of improving the standing of women in the KSA. Women and girls are faced with witlimiteded options in education, forced to choose only among a limited number of disciplines in which female students are allowed to major. After graduating with g my degree in Finance, upon entering the Saudi workforce, I was immediately struck by the inequality facing the women around me, who arrarelyer promoted to positions of authority, especially over men. But the problem runs much deeper than the banking institution since clients often refuse to have a woman manage their portfolio. This negative view of women that is society-wide, cutting across all social classes, presents an almost intractable glass ceiling that discourages the professional advancement of our women, even though she may be the most highly qualified candidate available. I learned a great deal from my experience in banking; for a start, rs it was my first time interacting with Saudi men. An end to the ban on women’s driving is one of the central demands of our women’s movements in Saudi Arabia. Yet, this is just one of many legislative, social, educational, and occupational constraints in the KSA that prevent women from fully participating in the development of our country. Overcoming these constraints will be essential if the Kingdodevelops and stays competitive in modern society. In recent years, however, there has been a very modest increase in opportunities for women’s development in Saudi Arabia. What progress needs to be continually built upon and not just applauded? My central purpose and goalies to work tirelessly for an easing of restrictions, allowing women more freedom, especially of movement, and greater levels of determination over their own lives, particularly their inalienable right to develop and excel at a profession or calling, make contributions to society in a public way, making full use of their intellectual gifts. I see my struggles as forming part of a larger narrative represented by thworkses of all Saudi women, and I see my failure or success as partly the failure or success of women in my country. Our challenges are unique as women in a Muslim country pushing to gain parity with men in all areas of social life. I bring all of these issues to the table and my sincere aspiration to contribute positively to your program. I will be most blessed and fortunate if I am to be accepted to XXXX. That I have gotten this far in my young career is a testament to the possibilitieforof women in or from Islamic countries. One of my proudest achievements so far has been my work with CVS Caremark All Kids Can™, a program of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and supported by CVS Caremark, a five-year, $25 million commitment to making life easier for children with disabilities. Through this signature program, CVS Caremark and the Trust support nonprofit organizations that provide innovative programs and services in local communities, focused on helping children with disabilities to learn, play and succeed in life. The goals of All Kids Can are to raise awareness in schools and in local communities about the importance of inclusion; build barrier-free playgrounds so children of all abilities can play side-by-side; and provide medical rehabilitation and related services to children with disabilities. I have taken full advantage of every opportunity to contribute to this program as a store manager for the past 10 years, responsible for onboarding, training, development of new and current talent. Day-to-day management of my team's activities involves numerous projects and almost countless operational tasks, including performance reviews based on individual projects, especially for the annual year-end reviews. I currently service as Conference Communicator, Journalist, and English/French Translator for the Cote d’Ivoire XXXX Church Creating awareness on the Church Vision, Missions and ministries, international relations and programs management I began my career working as a licensed Ivorian journalist and a translator as a Press Attaché and local correspondent for the XXXX News Service (USA) and the “XXXX Times”(Ghana) I have been giving all of my energy to the Lord and most of it to the XXXX Church in my country. In what follows I trace how my background has resulted in the gifts of life and love in Jesus Christ that I enjoy and treasure today. I was a Christmas gift to my parents in December of 1975. While making Christmas dinner my mother was touching her belly and praying to the Lord: "Father, you sent your son into the world. Here's mine in my belly, give him to me and allow him to be alive.” I would be the only child born to a fisherman and his wife, a fishmonger who instilled in their first child a deep and abiding sense of destiny in our Lord Jesus Christ, appreciation and respect for the power that is in his name, and the profound redemption that occurs to the extent to which we follow and worship Him. I have been nurtured in the cradle of XXXX since I was a child and it has empowered me to prosper through right living, hard work, and sincere dedication to the affairs of our church. I am most thankful that I have always received encouragement and support from my parents and my friends for all my religious activities. My skill at Biblical erudition increased rapidly over time and I immersed myself fully in everything related to Church life. I set my sights on becoming a pastor early on, fascinated by the ministers in our church. My choice of vocation was further confirmed when I became Sunday school teacher at the age of 17 and, later on, a licensed lay preacher. In 1995, after earning my High School Diploma, I set my heart upon the task of learning English which I saw as further grace from the Lord. I also received admission to the faculty of Performing Arts of the University of XXXX. In 1997, while studying Performing Arts, I decided to enter the Centre for Studies and Research in Communication. We were 66 applicants for a handful of openings but the Lord heard my prayers and I was selected. After earning my Bachelor’s Degree, I joined the Communication Office of the then XXXX Church of Cote d'Ivoire. My school research allowed me to identify numerous flaws in the communication policy of the Church and to share my expertise, anytime that it was asked for and to improve communication The theoretical knowledge and wisdom that I would go on to acquire were very much reinforced by various trainings and internships that the Lord provided both inside and outside of my country. Now 39 years old, I have given the last 15 years of my life to the Cote d’Ivoire XXXX Church. I am enormously pleased to continue to serve in my journalistic capacity as our News Editor in Chief and member of the Executive Committee of XXXX (The Voice of Hope) Confessional Radio. I felt humbled to be called to run the French Desk of the XXXX News Service during the XXXX Church 2012 General Conference which held in Tampa, Florida. It was the first time that delegates from my conference participated. This privilege duty helped me understand that in order to be a good communicator, I still have a long way to go in order to know God, know the Church and its mission, and always tell the story in most truthful way that I can. First and foremost I want very much to earn my MDIV Degree in an ecumenical, university-based divinity school that is committed to ecumenical causes and collaboration in the work of the Lord. I also want to learn from my fellow students from all over the world as well as my professors, enriching my own existence and ministry through the many stories of others who have labored all over the planet to further the causes of their own religious organizations. It has been a privilege to be a key player in Church communications and in fact we are still finding our feet. My joy is even greater to have been an active witness who helped write some important pages of the history of Cote d’Ivoire United Methodist Church. I am thinking particularly to the transition from the XXXX Church to the XXXX Church. I see earning the MDiv Degree at XXXX as the optimal springboard for enhancing the contribution that I will be able to make to my church in the future. My wife is also very excited about the idea of spending time on campus at XXXX University since she is doing her PHD in biochemistry and XXXX is famous for its research in the areas of biochemistry and medical advance. She is focusing her research on how we can use local plants to treat Alzeihmer’s diseas. Coming with me to XXXX would enrich her own work since she would have the opportunity to share her findings. Among my most important accomplishments and most challenging undertakings is the 105 page Internal Communication Audit that I recently submitted for approval to the Cote d’Ivoire XXXX Church I also produced a document of which I was very proud in 2009: Communication strategies and guidelines to promote the lay membership card, to be used by local churches. I am the author of several articles that have been published in the Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, India, the USA and the Internet. Most notable perhaps is my 30 page article entitled: Stakes of the Printing Press in the Cote d’Ivoire XXXX Church (Nov. 2007-30p) I see my primary contribution to the church as being that of a facilitator of communication. Looking at where I stood and where I am standing now, I realize that the Lord has taken the time to prepare me for this mission of communicator—even before I decided to it. "By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain"(1 Corinthians 15: 10). The call of the Lord comes to me in the form of dialogue, much like he had with the prophet Jonah. Like Jonah, I shout grateful praise and I will make good on my vows. But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, 'Salvation comes from the LORD."(Jonah 2:9). Being chosen to run the French Desk of our 2014 XXXX Church General Conference represents the pinnacle of my life so far and helps to define the platform upon which I see to build as a divinity student at XXXXt. My work on an international level has helped to prepare me to excel in your program as I am hungry and earnest to learn as much as I can about comparative theologies and ethics, especially but not exclusively insofar as the impact on Christianity. I look forward to bonding with many other Christians from Africa while we are it XXXX. if the Lord so desires, enabling us to develop our spiritual understandings, wisdom, and capacity to love that would enable us to excel in our ministry in and to Africa and its people. I am currently reading Assist Me to Proclaim, the Life and Hymns of Charles Wesley and I very much admire, in fact think of myself as a solid member and contributor to our Wesleyan tradition, searching for consensus in our interpretation of Wesleyan theology in light of current events and challenges, especially insofar as they have a direct impact on the church. I am not, however, focused on the idea of earning my degree at a Wesleyan seminary, rather, I look forward to making spiritual and academic progress by studying the traditions of others, which will in turn serve to enrich my relationship with my own religious tradition. By the grace of God, I have been able to explore many different spheres of communication with an advanced understanding of communication in religious organizations. These experiences have been fanning my thirst to proclaim His word to His people. That is why I answered the call of our Lord to become a preacher. I still remember the day of my preaching examination (Sunday, June 11, 2006); I flew to Zimbabwe two hours later for another training. The Lord takes pleasure in aligning certain events in my life for His glory. And since then, I am asked during communication days to preach on the subject, because the faithful think I'm the right person. It is a grace that is accompanied by profound responsibilities that have been entrusted to me. My support is the Lord my God, the leading communicator. My prayer is that he inspires and empowers me more and more. And above all, that he always makes me more useful for the work of the salvation of souls to which he called me through my work as a journalist, a communicator and in the future as a pastor. As a son who was born to a fisherman and a fishmonger, I want to perpetuate the main occupation of my parents but in other waters. As it is my calling, I want to catch fishes, prepare and offer them to the Lord, our Creator. As it is written “And how are they to hear without someone preaching? I see New York City as the center of the world because my field is international accounting and finance, and NYC is probably the world’s leading center for commerce and exchange. Thus, I feel strongly that I am a better fit at XXU than at any other program. The XXXX School represents the most careful preparation for my central goal of giving my all to a life of public service in auditing. A highly responsible and diligent individual, precise and focused, I am the type of person who is ideal for the professional role of auditor, taking responsibility for the financial interests of third parties, external users, creditors, and investors. I am currently studying at the University at Buffalo and will earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting this May 2016. I plan to take the first of four CPA exams this summer following graduation. I fully intend to get my CPA license as soon as possible and pass my CPA exams before graduating from a Master’s program. My long-term career goal is to become a partner in a prominent and highly reputable international accounting firm. Two things happened in my college life that greatly reinforced my high level of motivation to excel in accounting. During my junior year, I attended an accounting competition called PwC Challenge; an annual case competition focused on high-level issues to test and improve decision-making skills. Each team comprises five students working as consultants for a fictitious client. We have two weeks to research an assigned accounting issue and develop a 12-minute presentation. I was the team leader, and my team consisted of five international students, none of whom were native speakers in a classroom made up mostly of native speakers. We won third place based on our creative ideas, not our accents. I was pleased to appreciate better the fully international flavor of the language of business and finance. The most critical thing I learned as an undergraduate student is that Accounting need not be boring. It can be as creative and fascinating as our imaginations will allow. I also became a member of an accounting student organization named Beta Alpha Psi, helping with a community service event called Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) every spring semester. This program helps to prepare tax returns for individuals and families with annual incomes below $50,000. While I have logged hundreds if not thousands of hours in the classroom tackling the basics and finer points of accounting, this was the first time that I sat down with a client and helped someone, so it meant the world to me. This experience caused me to reflect very seriously both at the time and since then about the heavy responsibility of an accountant. If given the opportunity to complete your program, I feel strongly that I will be able to realize my professional aspirations to be an academic and inspire new generations of students, as well as a practitioner with the aim of serving as a diplomat in the future. I want to devote my life to the cause of managing and preventing conflicts in the Middle East - and subsequently the world. While born in Iran, I had the privilege of living in Canada, and had the opportunity to attend a boarding school in Switzerland for my secondary education, helping to lay a foundation for a truly international consciousness through constant travel and interaction with people from around the world. Thereafter, I moved to the United States, attending universities at three cities across the country, further paving the way for the development of my identity as a global citizen. Hassan Rouhani’s victory in the 2013 presidential elections in Iran brought unexpected hope and altered the trajectory of my life. While I intended to manage our family business in international trade, the new era impelled me to seek a future in academia and politics. Ever since, I became deeply involved in research about Iran and focused my studies on Iranian foreign policy, nominally, the nuclear negotiation between Iran and the world powers, different facets of the relationship between Iran and the United States, as well as United States foreign policy towards the Middle East. Following the completion of the negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, regional tensions unexpectedly grew to a level rarely seen in the past. As my research was focused on Iran’s foreign policy towards the West, in January 2016 I felt an urge to refocus my studies on the Persian Gulf and the Middle East region. My master's thesis, titled “Effectuating A Cooperative Future Between Iran and the Arab States of the Persian Gulf,” focused on finding ways to inhibit the escalation of current conflicts to perpetual ones, while at the same time, aims for more robust economic, social, and religious collaborations between Iran and its Arab neighbors. To broaden my audience, I translated the complete thesis in Farsi, and the Arabic version will be available early 2018. I felt a gap in the productive analysis of the future of the Persian Gulf. Much of the existing literature on the Persian Gulf region has focused on the importance of oil, the religious dimensions, and the proxy wars that have embroiled the Middle East as a whole. There has rarely been an analysis that differentiates Iran’s relations with its Arab neighbors, and subsequently, no blueprint exists for moving forward. I relied on the importance of understanding the merits of each bilateral relationship to better identify past grievances, as well as potential areas for greater cooperation. Having heavily invested the past two years in the study of the Persian Gulf region, I feel it is only the beginning of my research in to this ever-important region, and I hope to pursue my PhD degree with a focus on Iran’s relationships with the Arab countries in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East as a whole. Furthermore, the principal question my research intends to answer is how to best formulate a regional architecture based on qualitative and quantitative methods in which the regional actors can address past grievances, and build on the cultural, religious, and economic ties that have existed for centuries. I now seek a much deeper understanding of the Persian Gulf Region from a broad variety of interdisciplinary perspective, in the ongoing search for trends in foreign policy decision makings and the opportunities that exist for dialogue and peaceful resolution of differences, and ways to secure a more cooperative future amongst countries in the region. I am the best fit with the PhD Program at XXXX University because of both the focus and the flexibility of your program in addition to your world-class faculty. Based on my past experiences and the need for peace in the most unstable region of the world, I feel called to build a career in international relations and diplomacy, at least in part because of the great need that exists for negotiating and peace building between Iran and its neighbors. My sense of global citizenship and appreciation for the vast diversity of cultural and political expression has been enhanced by the fact that I have spent my life aiming for a better Iran, and subsequently its relations with the world. Since graduation in May 2017, I have assisted and advised several Iranian diplomats and I am currently a project assistant at the Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Political and International Studies in Tehran. Furthermore, I assisted my father in revamping our family business to better address the economic needs of Iran in the new era following the lifting of sanctions. We collaborate with numerous domestic services in Iran, including foreign investment facilitation, international trade process, and other matters. I am personally responsible for conducting political risk analyses by effectively coordinating with foreign embassies in Tehran, as well as other international organizations based in places such as Qatar, Switzerland, Netherlands, Bulgaria, and Brazil. I have a lengthy list of contacts, most of which I established during my time in Washington that I have effectively used to broaden my impact. I have been asked to publish a chapter on Iran’s foreign policy determinants for an upcoming book being published by the University of Leitz, Poland, in addition to publishing several chapters of my translated thesis in the Journal of International and Political Studies in Iran. Furthermore, I regularly write opinion pieces for the Atlantic Council website which are sometimes republished and translated to different languages by various sources around the world. Furthermore, I was invited to present my research on “Barriers to a Cooperative Future Between Iran and the Arab States of the Persian Gulf” at the Tehran Security Conference in December 2017. Another asset that I hope to bring to your program is my invaluable experience in the summer of last year in Geneva, Switzerland as a participant in the International Affairs and Multilateral Governance Summer Program. Peacemaking through diplomacy has always been my central focus, which is why I earned dual degrees as an undergraduate student, in Peace Studies as well as Political Science. For this reason, I am very keen on taking full advantage of the Center for International Conflict Resolution at ____.
