I grew up in a small village on one of the highest mountains in my country, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Since I was twelve years old, my principal dream has been to perfect my English skills as much as possible. I started learning English with a small red book which I still have until this day. By the time I finished high school, I found myself still very unsatisfied with the progress that I had made in terms of both my verbal and writing skills and I wanted very much to begin university studies in an English department. I was unable to do so, however, since the nearest college with an English program was too far away from my home. My family refused to relocate there on my behalf since a girl's education is seldom given top priority in my society. They also refused to allow me to move there by myself because I am a girl and they are supposed to remain closer to home. So, I ended up earning a diploma in Home Economics from a college in the city closest to where we lived. Nevertheless, I continued my studies and went on to earn another degree in Computer Science. I never abandoned my original dream, however, of studying English at an advanced level, always believing that my dream would someday become a reality. Fortunately, one of my younger brothers enrolled in a university that did have an English department and I was able to persuade my family to allow me to go as well and I finally earned my BA Degree in English Language. During that period, I met an especially wonderful teacher with a Master's Degree in translation and she very much inspired me to continue my studies in this area and to work towards becoming a professional translator. I have grown up bounded by very strict traditions and generally in the company of closed minds. I am achieving my liberation, however, as a result of my perseverance with English. Largely as a result of my work as a teaching assistant in the English department at a girls' college administered by XXXX University, I have been awarded a joint scholarship from the government and my university that will cover all of my expenses for completing a Master's Degree in Canada. I want to study English literature because I believe that this will help me to become a very good translator. I am also looking forward to taking classes in the area of TESOL, however, and combining my interests in language instruction and literature. I am especially excited about the prospect of learning how English literature can be used to teach the English language. I have overcome many obstacles to arrive at the point where I am because I have a strong faith that God guided me from the very beginning, directing me towards a purpose. I have become very comfortable here in Canada and my English skills have improved enormously; thus, I am very keen to begin studying in your program. I am here to prove for other Saudi girls that nothing is impossible if we have strong faith in the abilities that God has given us. In fact, my long term goal is to become the first woman to serve in the Ministry of Higher Education in my country.

Ever since I was a child I have had a passion for reading and writing and I believe that English is the ideal course for me to study at university. In school, English has consistently been my strongest subject and one that I find the most challenging, yet rewarding. My reading tastes are eclectic and I admire many writers, from those typically studied academically, such as Shakespeare, to contemporary novelists like Zadie Smith. My involvement in writing for Reality (the youth section of my local newspaper, the Jersey Evening Post) together with an article for the JCG Old Girls Magazine has given me first-hand experience in writing for an audience. This has reinforced my desire to study English at university. Studying English has not only given me the opportunity to appreciate works of literature, but has also allowed me to develop skills that will be of considerable benefit to me in the future. I have learnt to extract meaning through the detailed analysis of texts and to articulate my interpretation. I believe that these skills are generic and applicable in all walks of life. I have also always been interested in important moral debates, and I am aware that our great writers have often combined entertainment for their contemporary readers whilst addressing issues whose significance is as relevant today as when it was written. The study of literature has also enabled me to understand something of the cultural and historical contexts in which texts were written. Throughout my time studying English I have developed qualities that I am proud of - confidence in expressing my opinions, the ability to prompt and engage in group discussion and a willingness to explore different ideas and approaches to literature. The fact that I enjoy English so much means that motivation and commitment, two characteristics that I believe to be of the utmost importance, come relatively naturally to me. My love of writing leads me to favour journalism as a potential career, as I am fascinated by current affairs. Whilst this profession is often regarded as difficult to enter, I believe that my determination and confidence will help me to succeed. I have always enjoyed debating and have been involved in this both in and out of school. I contributed to the Jersey Youth Assembly in 2002, an event that mirrored a real parliamentary sitting of the States of Jersey, but consisted of students from the island's sixth forms. I acted as 'seconder' for a highly controversial motion, writing both my own speech and that of the 'proposer' Aside from academic studies, I enjoy a variety of pursuits. These include drawing, walking, cycling and yoga. I am keen on drama, gaining a GCSE in the subject and acting in school productions, and this is a hobby that I would like to continue at university. At present, I am doing voluntary unpaid community service, working in a coffee shop at the General Hospital, which I find worthwhile and rewarding. I am hoping to count this towards my Duke of Edinburgh Silver award. In school, I have been given the responsibilities of prefect and deputy house captain, positions that have benefited me in terms of both my organisational and time-keeping skills and have allowed me to become deeply involved with my school in its various activities and fundraising events.

I am an English teacher from Saudi Arabia. I would very much like to study towards the Ph.D. in Composition TESOL at XXXX University because of the excellent reputation of the program and the fact that it has been recommended to me and are now working as professors at universities in Saudi Arabia. Since my undergraduate years, I have been heavily immersed in the study of both theoretical and applied linguistics, especially in the areas of syntax and morphology, I have worked as an English teacher at intermediate, secondary and college levels and I have a special interest in the scientific investigation of the particular errors and difficulties that are most common among Arab learners of English, particularly as concerns grammar along with speaking and writing skills. I am also very much engaged with the question of the ways in which cultural factors in Saudi Arabia impede the improvement of our curricula and methods in EFL instruction. One of the issues that I especially look forward to researching as a graduate student in your program is the way that certain teaching methods may have best results with a particular group of students and how this is related to the culturally specific environment of Saudi institutions of higher learning. I am concerned with the level of motivation of Saudi students of English and ways in which it might be heightened by the development of more creative curricula. Having completed my MA in TESOL at the University of XXXX, Australia, I have gained valuable experience in the implementation of teaching methods that suit a particular group of students by drawing from TESOL theory in the development of creative practical methods of English instruction designed for specific, target groups of students. My long term goal is to teach university level students. Students are particularly weak in their reading and writing skills. Furthermore, Saudi classrooms are not fully equipped for listening and speaking practices. If I am accepted into your program, I will learn the skills that I need to be able to contribute to making English language instruction in my country much more effective. I want to gain extensive expertise in the design and selection of purposive curricula, the organization of language laboratories and how to go about raising student awareness of the importance of studying English as the tool for global communication. I look forward to many decades of productive research and publication in the areas of language research, the psychology of language learners, second language teacher education, CALL, language and cultures, language teaching methods in the post-method era, etc. Earning the Ph.D. in Composition and TESOL at XXXX will enable me to achieve all of my professional goals.

My homeland of Libya is a country of many languages with many differing dialects of multiple origins, including Afro-Asiatic, Semitic, Tamazight, Awjila-Sokna, Indo-European, Indo-Iranian, Indo-Aryan, Zenati, and Tamashek. Growing up, traveling, being educated, and educating others in this incredibly culturally-diverse environment, I have been fortunate enough to learn and be conversant, reading and writing three languages, French, as well as Arabic and English. Furthermore, my travels to France, England, the US and South America. have shown me the wonderfully rich tapestry of languages and cultures we have on earth; and I want to explore it further. My undergraduate education in English began in 1981 in Libya followed shortly after by a full-time intensive teacher training course of study with the English Language Institute in Guilford, England. It was my aim to become an effective teacher of English for children in secondary education. I consider this part of my career to have been the time in which I developed effective methods for conveying concepts, clearly explaining the basics of English through increasingly creative approaches, and providing extra tutoring or instruction as needed, so as not leave anyone behind. As time went by, I increasingly came to realize that I very much wanted to prepare myself for a lifetime of research into the various language-related problems that I have observed in my teaching career. Thus, I pursued a Master's Degree is in Applied Linguistics in Libya and went on to earn the Trinity London Certificate in TESOL at Oxford. For the past twenty-two years, I have dedicated myself to the teaching of English as well as Arabic to groups of foreign workers in my homeland of Libya. My work with the Academy of Higher Studies has exposed me to numerous professional approaches to teaching as well as effective translation of English. I have taken special delight in preparing my department for the AHS's Translation Conference held in Libya. A Ph.D. from the XXXX Department of Linguistics will enable me to achieve my goals of being instrumental in the refinement of the course structure and syllabi of the English Department of XXXX University in Tarhuna, Libya.  In order to affect changes for the betterment of the further education of our students, I will need to do further research into semantics, and sociolinguistics, as well as morphology, particularly between Arabic and English morphemes, and syntax in terms of the relations between discourse and the emergence of syntax under the heading of discourse analysis; and I am confident that I would be quite successful at accomplishing these goals in your program. No other school in the nation can offer me such a comprehensive and current regimen of linguistic theories, nor the depth of analysis of language and languages components as does XXXX. It is my aim to eventually become a professor at my university, researching different aspects of English, and how it is learned and taught. XXXX Department. of Linguistics has a reputation for being a leader in the research of the causal models of language the entire spectrum and it is my intention to inject my own unique hypotheses about how language should be studied and the process by which such research ought to be conducted. This is why I want to pursue my PhD at XXXX rather than any other institution in the US. I continue to split my time between the University and specialized English training centers and I am intent upon someday opening a language training center for future teachers of English, utilizing the newest teaching methods, the SL-teaching method, and conducting research for the purposes of publishing, and the improvement of English education in Libya.

Specialized techniques for reaching both adults and children. By completing a post-baccalaureate advanced certificate program in TESOL, I will be more able to bring my ambitions and goals my dreams to fruition. There is a distinct need in South Korea for after-school programming and nursery schools, that couple music appreciation with language education. I have seen this need and am certain I could positively contribute to filling this cultural and educational void, to give South Korea's children, our future citizens, the same opportunities that I was given. It is only natural, given my affinity and aptitude in music, to want to bring my passion for music to children. There have been many studies to prove that children who do well in music also do well in math, have enhanced concentration skills, and greater self-discipline. In order to be an effective owner and operator of a private institution, I need to first establish myself as a professional and an authority in TESOL. Thus, your Advanced Certificate Program would be an excellent foundation for graduate research in TESOL. I feel fortunate to have been given two sets of experiences, aptitude in two languages, two cultures and two worldviews from which to draw, and thereby have achieved a high level of multicultural competency. I have continued to visit my homeland at least once every two years for the last twenty years. Having experienced life in both the US and South Korea, I am aware of the cultural norms, how language is used in various situations, and what is acceptable in which circumstances. Coupled with my love of rich cultural tapestries is my love of learning, and I feel this has been the key to my academic success, a 4.0 GPA, and a very high level of involvement. I have always carried a most demanding course load and have honed my interests in preparation for the challenge and opportunity of graduate study. In addition to my solid academic foundation in music and psychology, I have completed countless hours at my Korean church as a piano teacher and accompanist, and teaching English to the elderly. I have also worked as a Piano Teacher at Piano Studio, teaching children how to play, enjoy piano and music in general.  I consider this part of my career to have been the time in which I developed effective methods for conveying concepts, clearly explaining the basics of both English and music through increasingly creative approaches, and giving extra tutoring or instruction as needed, so as not leave anyone behind. Thus, I have become increasingly dedicated to pursuing a career as an ESL/EFL professional, researcher, and professor. I am a young woman from Brazil whose major constant in life has been a profound love and respect for nature, especially animals and the way that we depend upon them for our own survival and well being. At 27, I feel that I am at the optimal point in my life to pursue graduate school, having had a chance to adapt well to life in the USA, fully adopting Minnesota as my new home, and preparing myself for full time study and research in English. I relocated here not long after finishing my undergraduate studies in Veterinary Medicine 2 years ago in my native Brazil. I want very much to continue my studies at the U of XXXX because of my deep respect for your program and the contacts that I have already made with professors in your department; your program is the only one to which I am applying. I especially look forward to studying the molecular mechanisms by which bacterial organisms are able to successfully infect their hosts, the evolution and adaptation of the pathogen. The central professional interest that I have developed so far is working with mastitis in dairy cows. I am especially excited about the prospect of defeating mastitis because of the vast amount of resources that would be saved if we were able to better control, perhaps eventually even entirely avoid this problem, and continue to produce the highest quality of milk possible for public consumption, as well as improving the well being of cows. I see my calling in life as first and foremost a research scientist. This is what I find most engaging: diagnostic tests, host-pathogen interactions, etc. I love going to school and continuing to enhance my capacity for research, and I hope to study for the PHD degree at some point in my career. My long term goal is to spend many decades doing what I love most, research, with either a university or a private company. Studying in your program will provide me with the requisite foundation that will enable me to find a position where I will have the opportunity to make full use of my creative potential in the quest for constant innovation and progress fighting pathogens. A natural team player, I very much look forward to the joys of collegiality, sharing the mysteries, hurdles, and triumphs of scientific investigation with my fellow researchers and my teachers. Of course, Latin America will always be dear to my heart. And, in addition to my native Portuguese, I have achieved an intermediate level in Spanish and need to work primarily on my writing skills, which I intend to improve over time. Thus, I also hope to make contributions down the road to the development of safer and more productive dairy operations in Latin America and look forward to doing research at some point with respect to the special challenges faced in this region of the world. I also have a basic competency in German. All of my related experience during the time that I was a university student was as a volunteer. I worked with food safety (milk and meat inspections), dairy, swine and chicken farms, milk quality and a virus laboratory, as well as a small animal and equine hospital. I also helped with various research projects that included an evaluation of the use of probiotics in yogurt consumed by children and adolescents, as well as polishing pond used for post-treatment in a UASB reactor for swine wastewater with an emphasis on the removal of nitrogen. I currently have the privilege of doing an internship with MAST (Minnesota Agricultural Student Trainee) with the University of XXXX. I also worked in a big dairy farm in Illinois, Golden Oaks Farm, from July 2009 through December of 2009. My main job was to take care of the calves, giving them milk, water and grain twice a day and changing their bed three times a week. I also helped the milkers in the parlor and helped with mastitis diagnostics and control. From January through May of 2010, I completed several courses--Dairy Production System Management, Farm and Business Management, Ruminant Nutrition, and Journalism at the University of XXXX in the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources. During this time, I also worked in a mastitis project with Dr. Sandra Godden in the Laboratory for Udder Health. I am currently working with Dr. Bob XXXX from the department of Veterinary Population Medicine, helping with a project dedicated to eliminating the PRRS virus from sow herds. I believe that these experiences have prepared me to be able to contribute to your program and to excel academically. I wish to thank Dr. XXXX, in particular, for encouraging me to apply for your graduate program. I also would like to express my sincere gratitude to Drs. At 28 years old, it has been my dream for some time to earn the PHD in Linguistics, because I see this area of study as my vocation and life’s work. I am a young man that has always engaged with the mystery of language, especially dialects, in Arabic, in Saudi Arabia, and now throughout the Arab world. It is my hope that contributing to our body of research on dialects in the Arab world will aid us to better understand ourselves as peoples, our origins, and the importance of honoring linguistic traditions. What I crave most about the PHD is the opportunities that it will open up for engaging in field work concerning the many interesting properties—some as yet undiscovered—of Arabic dialects in Saudi Arabia. I look forward to continuing to instructing Saudi university students in this and many other areas related to the relevancy of linguistics to Arab society. I feel strongly that linguists need to structure their research in such a way as to make it relevant for pedagogy as well, helping us to better understand language acquisition patterns in such a way as to learn how to teach language more effectively. I am an avid traveler when I have the chance and this is enormously helpful to helping to train my ear for subtle differences in dialect. Although I have not been in America very long, I have already visited several different states and I am beginning to better understand the nature of regional expression here in America. In the summer of 2007, I visited the UK, where I completed a course in teaching methodology at XXXX University for one month. In 2008, I spent several weeks in Malaysia and visited Indonesia in 2009. In 2010 I was in Egypt; and, finally, this year, 2011, I was able to visit Turkey. And I feel strongly that in some fundamental way, my travels have helped me to become a better student of linguistics, opening my mind and helping me to better appreciate the subtleties of language diversity. Linguistics is a field that intrigues and stimulates me, and I view it as much more of a vocation than a means to earning a living. I am especially interested in syntax and phonology, and I am looking forward to being able to develop a deeper understanding of these subjects as well as linguistics in general. I will be graduating next summer, 2012, with my MA Degree in Linguistics from XXXX University. So I feel that I have acquired an appropriate foundation for study at the doctoral level. After completing my doctoral studies, I plan to return to Saudi Arabia where I would like to serve as a professor at XXXX University, where I am currently a Teaching Assistant. I especially look forward to excelling as a researcher in the dialects of Saudi Arabia, especially of my own dialect, which is Najdi Arabic, a dialect in which there has been virtually no investigation so far. I hope to stimulate the study of both Linguistics in particular, in Saudi Arabia, as well as the study of vernacular Arabic and how this is related to regional Arabic dialects. In addition to my position at the university, I also volunteer my time tutoring English students that are particularly challenged in this area. This has helped me to recognize and highlight special problem areas for Arabic learners of English. Many students have difficulty in pronunciation; others seem to be especially challenged by certain aspects of syntax. My teaching experiences have helped me to better understand the complexity of comparative systems of language in syntax and phonology. I have also served as a group leader for numerous summer camps. This was an incredible opportunity for me to meet other people outside my usual circle of acquaintances and to increase my understanding of diverse perspectives. I am a hard working and talented student of linguistics at XXXX University. The word “impossible” is not in my vocabulary, and I have persevered to overcome many personal obstacles in order to study in the United States, because I dream of one day making a great contribution to the field of linguistics. I believe that obtaining a Ph.D. is the real beginning of the adventure of life-long learning and research and I look forward to many decades of struggle to better understand the numerous, lesser known facets of Saudi Arabian dialects. My experiences studying in the UK, my extensive study of and visit to Malasia in 2009, have helped to form a very global and professional mentality and to have made my education more well-rounded, complete through its profound appreciation for diversity, in culture as well as language. I visited Indonesia for two weeks as well; touring Egypt and Turkey were also important linguistic adventures for me, exposing me to other cultures and languages. I am especially excited at the prospect of attending the University of Milwaukee, and I hope to not only learn from others in my chosen field, but also to have the privilege of teaching my own culture and language. I look forward to hearing about your decision soon.

I am a young woman from Malaysia; still only 28 years old, I have fallen in love with Communications and Media in a global context entire. I think of myself as a world citizen and I have already seen much of the planet. Making good use of my vacations from college, I have backpacked through Indonesia (Medan, Jakarta, Bandung), Thailand (Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Tao), Cambodia (Siem Reap & Phnom Penh), Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, England, France, the Netherlands and Australia. When I was only 10 years old, my teacher, Madam Che Wan Tom, helped me to realize that if I believe in myself, I can touch the sky. While I was like any other girl from a poor family in many ways, I had to carry the stigma of being the daughter of a single mother. My mother taught me, however, that education is not only about grades, it's about the learning process; it is the journey itself that is most important. I have now earned a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology and I have great hope that our communications revolution will also continue to revolutionize education, helping to foster respect for human rights, dignity and more equal treatment of our people. My long term goal is to teach and promote digital ethics, particularly the teaching Malaysian children how to protect themselves online. After finishing my secondary school, I furthered my studies at Sultan Idris Education University earning my Bachelor of Education (Information Technology) Degree with Honors and scoring well in both my Information Technology and Education classes. I have studied many subjects that are related to Information Technology theory and application. At the same time, I also took classes that focused on educational theory, teaching methodologies and learning information technologies as well as teaching information technology and instructional design. One of the projects that I was involved with was for courseware development using Microsoft Visual Basic. In this project, I was able to put to use much of the knowledge that I have gained from a combination of education and IT subjects. Of special relevance is my volunteer experience with the School Of Hope on Mabul Island. I worked tirelessly to collect enough donations to purchase the school materials that they needed for basic educational functions. Myself and my colleagues also started an Arts Program during our lengthy stay, I chose to give my all to the School Of Hope for over a year because of the fact that it serves Bajau and Suluk children who are born stateless. Like their fathers and forefathers, they have no access to state-sponsored education, healthcare or social welfare services. I am also actively engaged in supporting educational technology for the Sultan Idris Education University for the School Project in Brai-bis Chenam, Phnom Penh, Cambodia. We raise money to build new classrooms and promote the provision of healthy food for the children to eat. My teachers have enabled me to realize the power of teaching and, thus, I want to emulate them, and live my life to be the finest teacher possible. I want to devote my life to education because I crave the thrill of standing at the center of the learning process, as innovator, scientist, conductor, and as human being. My greatest strength may be the intense passion that I have for everything having to do with the computer and I have been heavily engages with the computer and the Internet for for over 10 years. I feel that I will be able to excel in your program because of my vast interest, curiosity, experience with computers and social networks. I want very much to spend the rest of my life traveling the world with my students on the Internet, exploring cultures, languages, and new ways of seeing the world. I am especially proud of the fact that I learned how to design software by myself, going far beyond anything that I learned as an undergraduate student earning my degree in Computer Science. I have always struggled to combine my creativity with independence and this has helped to make my software highly unique and most distinct from the work of other developers. I have succeeded over the years as a result of my very high level of motivation and a lot of hard work. While I enjoy working at my current position immensely as a Senior Programmer for the XXXX Food and Drug Authority, and I appreciate the high level of responsibility that I bear, nevertheless, I feel strongly that I need to further my education by earning an advanced degree in order to advance in my career. I am applying to the XXXX School of Engineering at UXX in order to earn my Master’s Degree in Computer Science at one of the world’s foremost communications and technology centers. I see your program as unparalleled with respect to scope and sophistication as well as having especially critical resources, most notably the UXX Center for Systems and Software Engineering. I especially admire the biography and pioneering accomplishments of Professor XXXX in Software Engineering. I first became particularly passionate about graphics and design even prior to my college career as a Computer Science major. What I enjoy most is a combination of design and software development. I am never happier than I am when I am working long hours to make software easier to use and look great. Planning is everything and I excel at this stage, prior to development. App development for the IPhone is what I do in my free time as an adult, instead of playing video games which I so enjoyed as a child and adolescent. Psychologically, they fulfill much the same drive to stay occupied, creative, and most of all productive, as well as entertaining. My father and older brother are both physicians and they encouraged me to join them in this profession. I went so far as to get accepted to one of the most prestigious medical schools in Saudi Arabia and then changed my mind, instead earning my undergraduate degree in Computer Science and following my passion. I have always enjoyed how computers and related technology make our lives easier. So I decided to be one of those people who dedicated their lives to making the world a better—faster, easier, cleaner—place to live through the advancement of technology. Having always been inspired by photography becoming a self-taught master of Adobe Photoshop was a natural. For years, I have done extensive freelance work for many companies, groups and organizations and this has served to greatly improve my skills, constantly surmounting one challenge after another. I look forward, in particular, to putting my design skills to good use making applications with increasingly creative graphical interfaces. These past six months, for example, I have been working on a free app on the iOS App Store called “XXXX”, which is a tool to calculate debts among groups of people with shared expenses. My thesis project to graduate in June of 2007 from King Saud University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Sciences was a web-based smart gift choosing system using several artificial intelligence technologies such as a decision tree and machine learning. After three months, I was hired by the XXXX as a Programmer on the recommendation of the Vice Dean of the Computer Sciences and Information College to the IT Sector Head. I have now worked on many projects for my employer, the most important of which was the development of the human resources management system, which manages all employee-related tasks, such as leaves, permissions, payroll, and employee development. After gaining some experience at my job, I proposed to my management the idea of having an Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP) system to combine all the internal systems together into one system. The project was eventually approved and I was made the Project Manager. In May 2015, I delivered the first component of the project, Human Resource Management and Payrolls. In January of 2015 my management offered me a fully paid scholarship to study in the USA and they will hold my position until I earn the Master’s Degree and return. After I complete your distinguished program, I will return to my country and continue working for my employer. After gaining several more years experience, I hope to go to work on large international projects as a Project Manager. I have also enjoyed serving as a principal Organizer on Riyadh Google Technology User Group known as (XXXX) which is a community run by passionate individuals seeking to learn about Google’s new development platforms and technologies. A well traveled young man who is physically fit and energetic, I look forward to contributing to the diversity of your program as an Arab man from the Middle East and I also look forward to learning from the diverse student population in your graduate program at UXX as we share notes and strategies, especially concerning Application Graphical Interface Design. I have been to the USA on 4 occasions for lengthy visits and I now live in Los Angeles where I have spent the past several months improving my English through full immersion experience in and out of the classroom.. I trace my fervor for innovation in the area of computer science and electrical engineering to that moment back in the early 1990s, when I was about 10 years old, and I saw my first cell phone. These novel and seemingly miraculous vehicles of communication were only making their appearance then in my native India. The impact that this early gadget had on my curiosity was unprecedented; as I came face to face with the sheer power of this device, my childhood dreams began to take shape, resulting in my career choice to give my all to innovation in computer based communications devices. As time passed, and I matured, immersing myself in my university studies, I came to realize more and more that communications devices are not toys, or simply exotic, exciting gadgets. Rather, especially for a country like India with one of the largest populations in the world and the vast majority still living in poverty, the advancement of electronic and computer-based technology is the foundation of our economic growth. Thus, I find special fulfillment in my life course dedicated to the advancement of communications for the masses because I see it as a noble endeavor, and the best contribution that I might make to global society, my native India in particular. As part of my undergraduate curriculum in CS and Engineering, I took a wide variety of courses including theory of automata and computation, principles of operating systems, database management systems, compiler design, computer networks, network security and management, wireless communication and web development. I began gravitating almost immediately to computer networks, the area in which I hope to make my mark in research and development. My world lit up like a pinball machine the first time that I used Network Simulator. Soon, I became most at home writing code and evaluating network protocols. One of the areas in which I had the privilege of doing an in-depth investigation was with respect to the problem of connecting two universal plug-and-play home networks without multicasting. I presented a solution based on NAT and Firewall rules to share devices and services between two UPnP networks. As I continued to study day and night, India became electrified by the mobile revolution, catching on and playing catch up progressively and exponentially all around me, beginning in the early 2000s. This great enthusiasm made me feel that I had made the right decision, and that no other career could be this exciting. Graduating number 3 out of 67 students, I immediately saw myself as bound for graduate studies. I was selected by TCS to work as a SharePoint developer on multiple projects as part of a team where my primary role was web application development. After one year at TCS, I had earned my Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification and joined Aricent Group as a network engineer, developing and supporting their cloud computing technologies. I thrive on the tremendous pressure of supporting client networks with minimal downtime. I learned a lot about Cisco’s latest Unified Computing System focusing on virtualization and the way in which their UCS products serve as the core for data centers, maximizing the efficiency of computing resources. Most important, I now have extensive, hands-on experience simulating our customers’ network environments in the lab working on storage platforms, scripting and testing firmware, and working with developers to identify and resolve critical issues. As part of XXXX’s team I have acquired cutting-edge experience testing and supporting the latest virtualization and networking technologies. I hope to spend the balance of my professional life at fully immersed in the latest developments in computer-based technology, creating solutions for new generations of wireless technologies. Among emerging technologies, I see vast potential, in particular, in the unification of home/appliances and automotive networking, artificial intelligence and wireless connectivity with seamless access from an external network. Nothing excites me more than the Internet of Things (IoT), still in its infancy, particularly its potential for the seamless connection of devices to networks. I look forward to when the IoT matures and the application development platform will be able to support huge amounts of data collected from a lot of devices and presented to the end user or decision making system in a meaningful way. There are several areas of application for IoT in which I hope to become engages, particularly environmental sensing, traffic management, and smart product management. The range of applications that will benefit from IoT is mind boggling and I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm with talented engineering students from around the world once I enroll in your distinguished program at XXU. I am a young man from Saudi Arabia who is currently finishing up his Master’s Degree in Computer Science at the University of XXXX. I have enjoyed my studies here at UXX enormously. I feel that I still have much to learn, however, and I hope very much to have the opportunity to continue my studies at UXX at the doctoral level. Saudi Arabia is, of course, wealthy in petroleum. This is not a renewable energy source, however, and this wealth must be invested in new, cleaner and more sustainable technologies before this oil supply either runs out or becomes obsolete. This will require great strides in the development of new communication and business infrastructure, however, in addition to vast improvements in our educational system. In many important ways, Saudi Arabia is a Developing or Third World country in terms of communications infrastructure. This is why I am asking for admission to doctoral studies, so that I might prepare myself as fully as possible for the great task at hand, bringing Saudi Arabia up to First World standards in terms of communications engineering, so that we have a solid foundation for being economically competitive for the long term. In addition to my studies towards the Master’s Degree, my application is strengthened by my experience as a volunteer Research Assistant at the Center for Excellence in Information Assurance in the KSA from August of 2010 through March of 2011. This is a specialized research center in the field of computer and information security and this position provided me with the opportunity to work closely with professionals in the area of computer security. I made the decision to volunteer my time with this organization because I felt that being involved in research early on would help me to meet the great challenges that I hoped to face in the future, especially in terms of rigorous research at the doctoral level. This position helped me to learn how to write effective papers both individually and within a group. While working there, I was able to co-author and publish a paper (M. ZubairRafique, Nasser Alrayes, Muhammad Khurram Khan and KhaledAlghthber,“ Application of Evolutionary Algorithms in Detecting SMS Spam at Access Layer”, Gecco 2011 (Feb 2011)). By the time that I left this position and came to America, I also felt that I had developed the necessary skills to be a creative and responsible critic of the work of others as well as my own. This position, along with my studies here at UXX, have helped me to better appreciate the way in which we must address our problems and issues from multiple angles or perspectives, with close attention to detail, if we are going to successfully meet our challenges. I have learned to never give up, to always keep trying until I solve a problem. My long term goal is to serve as a college professor and researcher in my country, making important contributions to the education of new generations of young Saudis in the cutting-edge areas of research in my field. I want to work tirelessly to help my country develop its communications infrastructure and research centers. It is my dream that one day my country will become a leader in the field of computer and information sciences. I also hope to one day have my own lab or research center that will not only contribute to the field of computer science in Saudi Arabia but to humanity as a whole.
