My first visit to XXXX University was when I was around 8 or 9 years old. My uncle, who earned a master's degree in economics from XXXX, showed me around the campus during a trip to DC. The architecture, history, and vibrant atmosphere of XXXX have always stayed with me. This is just one reason why XU is my top choice for graduate studies in Real Estate, as I prepare for a successful career in Construction Management. I am an ideal candidate for XU due to my high motivation, dedication to my field, and the fact that your program is recognized as one of the most rigorous and prestigious in the country. I aim to deepen my understanding of real estate fundamentals, law, finance, markets, accounting, and construction management. I am eager to explore the ethical and legal challenges in corporate real estate. The complexities of corporate real estate have always fascinated me and driven my desire to learn more. After completing a master's degree at XXXX, I plan to remain in the Chicagoland area until my youngest child goes to college, after which I hope to work abroad for a global company.
I have extensive experience in construction, facilities management, and design, and I have also been involved with the legal aspects of real estate in my career and volunteer work. In your MPS Real Estate Program, I look forward to learning from world-class professionals in my field and from around the globe. This is the right time for me to attend graduate school because, even before my recent layoff due to downsizing, I felt stagnant in my position and have been preparing to return to graduate studies for the past two years. As a 47-year-old single parent, I aim to be an exceptional role model for my children, demonstrating the importance of giving one's all. I possess the experience, drive, and refined skills necessary to excel as a master's student. During my undergraduate studies, I attended two colleges and managed four part-time jobs, funding my own education.
A lifelong learner, I believe in investing in myself through education, volunteering, and embracing company culture initiatives. As a facilities space planner for a large corporation, cost-effective design has always been my priority. This experience will help me excel in your MPS RE Program at XU. I am eager to build new relationships and expand my professional network through interactions with professors, classmates, and future colleagues, as well as leaders in the real estate industry. Georgetown is ideal for me because of its emphasis on construction management as a key component of the real estate program, alongside its outstanding focus on sustainability and the effects of globalization on real estate markets.
What I enjoy most is helping corporations manage construction, particularly in terms of efficient space management. I excel in this area and hope to make my professional mark by becoming an expert in acquiring, disposing of, and managing space with the help of Georgetown. In my career, I have handled sensitive information and signed numerous non-disclosure agreements. I have learned the importance of confidentiality, especially when closing or relocating a business location. This situation has presented ethical dilemmas, as I wish associates and employees could receive more notice before a location closes. However, I understand the business challenges that could arise if information is disclosed prematurely. I have also faced ethical issues in my volunteer work.
As a Latina originally from Bolivia and a native Spanish speaker, I feel compelled to assist recent arrivals to the USA with their legal issues, giving back to my community. I regularly volunteer at a legal aid clinic, acting as an intermediary between the attorney and clients. I interpret between English and Spanish in legal matters such as family law, real estate law, and corporate law. I handle confidential information and ensure client-attorney confidentiality by keeping personal information private, which I always do. Over the years, I have learned that maintaining professional ethics, integrity, and strong boundaries is crucial to protecting both owner and client information.
As a survivor of officer-involved domestic violence (OIDV), I am passionate about creating multifamily residential environments for survivors and their children. I know firsthand that legal, educational, and financial empowerment, along with counseling, are key to overcoming domestic abuse situations. My goal is to provide safety for OIDV survivors and their children in an area often overlooked—shelter. I dream of developing housing for these survivors, who have been ignored for too long. As a single parent of two beautiful children, ages 9 and 15, who are also OIDV survivors, I have always emphasized the importance of learning as a lifestyle. My background and life experiences motivate me to continue learning about construction management throughout my life. Graduating from Columbia College with a bachelor's in fine art and a focus on Interior Architecture, I learned early on the value of hard work and perseverance.
I mentor up to five women, providing motivation and emotional support to single mothers, survivors of domestic violence, and those seeking employment. My goal is to listen, mentor, and inspire survivors of domestic violence, offering positive feedback to enrich their lives. I excel at listening and motivating women survivors of domestic violence and women seeking employment, often leading to positive transformations.
I have also distinguished myself as a volunteer in Odessa and Kiev, Ukraine, making multiple trips, including a seven-week stay caring for orphans in orphanages and bringing medical supplies, particularly nebulizers for children with asthma. This was personal, as my children and I have asthma, and I wanted to ensure other children in need had access to a nebulizer. Additionally, I personally brought winter hats, comic books for boys, and headbands for girls. The headbands were special to me, as the girls' hair was often shaved to prevent lice, and I wanted them to still feel feminine.
Recently, I was laid off from Sears Holdings Corporation during a mass layoff. Several mass layoffs have occurred in recent years due to Sears losing relevance with the millennial market. I see this as an excellent opportunity to invest in myself, my education, and my advancement in the corporate real estate world.
I am confident I will excel in the part-time online program at XXXX University School of Continuing Studies Master's Professional Real Estate, as I seek a stronger professional network and foundation while building on my current corporate real estate successes. My curiosity to further my education stems from my experience as a facilities project manager sitting next to the CO, who has since retired. During that time, I had numerous opportunities to listen and learn about corporate real estate, which confirmed my passion for this career path. Seeking an opportunity to continue my education and enhance my capabilities, I view XXXX University School of Continuing Studies as my pathway to achieving my goals.
I am convinced I will distinguish myself at XXXX in design and construction project management, which I most enjoy within the corporate real estate asset management sector. My goal is to become a Construction Management professional and to learn everything possible about acquiring and disposing of space. Eventually, I aspire to rise to the level of Managing Director in a Corporate Real Estate environment. I have always dreamed of living in Washington, DC, and attending XXXX University. Although I am currently applying to the online program, I look forward to attending some classes in DC and even going abroad for the class focusing on Germany: “Exploring Opportunities in Europe.” Up to this point, I have been part of the “sandwich generation,” caring for my aged parents and my children. Now, however, my circumstances allow me to fully dedicate myself to real estate, immersing myself in my studies to advance as a full-fledged professional.
Thank you for considering my application to the Real Estate program at XXXX.
