I am a 23-year-old woman from China, set to complete my MPH Degree at XXXX University in May 2011. My primary focus has been epidemiology, though I have also developed a strong interest in global health. I am eager to pursue a PhD in the Biostatistics Program at XXXX, as I believe this will enable me to make significant contributions to the field of epidemiology on a global level.
I am particularly interested in researching AIDS and cancer. I am enthusiastic about advancing my research in quantitative methods to analyze data related to chronic diseases like AIDS and cancer. I am eager to study various statistical methods concerning complex sampling design and meta-analysis. My long-term goal is to become a leading expert in health sciences, proficient in guiding investigative teams in the field.
I am a dedicated and compassionate young woman, genuinely concerned with the health of society's most vulnerable groups, and I have chosen to dedicate my career to combating diseases. My teaching and leadership experience, along with an internship at the Disease Control Center, have provided me with invaluable firsthand experience in this area.
At the master's level, I have been thoroughly trained in methodology, biostatistics, and epidemiology, earning all 'A' grades in my courses. I also have extensive laboratory experience in biological sciences, having completed an undergraduate thesis on AIDS and conducted significant research on cancer. Additionally, I am a skilled proposal writer, having received a GFE scholarship. I enjoy designing questionnaires and surveys, conducting experiments, and analyzing data. As a Chinese woman, I am particularly interested in the numerous public health challenges facing China, which I have studied. I grew up in an academic family. Even as a child, I often stayed late in the laboratory with my parents, doing homework and playing with rubber suction bulbs. I learned early the value of hard work and dedication to science. In the summer of 2007, I joined a group of students who ventured into the countryside to conduct surveys, and we co-authored a paper on the one-child policy that won the top prize in a competition by the National Population and Family Planning Commission of China.
My undergraduate education in the Fundamental Sciences Program at Tsinghua University provided me with deep theoretical knowledge in biomedicine and biochemistry, as well as substantial laboratory research skills in chronic diseases—such as neurodegenerative diseases, oxidation, microbicide, and HIV/AIDS. In 2007, I participated in a genetics research project using Drosophila Melanogaster to screen potential transgenes for Parkinson's and studied potential drugs for treating Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s chorea, while searching for microRNA responsive to H2O2 treatments using high throughput sequencing technology. The following year, at the Yunnan University of Chinese Traditional Medicine, I worked on detecting microbicide candidates from Salvia Yunnanensis and walnut tea using ELISA for HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibition.
In 2008, Tsinghua University’s Comprehensive AIDS Research Center (CARC) began operations, and I collaborated with them in my final year, becoming the first student to complete my undergraduate thesis with CARC. I utilized the HIV backbone vector pNL4-3 to package pseudo viruses by co-transfecting them with pcDNA-ENV plasmid into 293T cells, using ghost cell models for titer-detection via luciferase assay. Within two months, I obtained 38 high-activity HIV-1ENV pseudo-particles from various virulent Chinese virulent strains and drafted an optimized protocol for pseudo virus packaging, featuring high transfection efficiency, benefiting other lab researchers. I established the Pseudovirus-based Assay for HIV-1 and displayed the HIV envelope gene (CNE3-ENV) on a yeast surface through DNaseI random cleavage and reassembly. The successful construction of the HIV-1 ENV library in a yeast surface display system paved the way for a new accelerated vaccine design strategy, offering a novel method for recognizing relationships between antibodies and epidemics.
I also enjoyed a summer practicum (2020) with the Bureau of Education, where I designed a questionnaire for high school students and led a team conducting surveys on mental health and health education, performing statistical analysis using SAS 9.2. I then collaborated with my group to prepare an evidence-based strategy report to aid in policy making. This experience inspired me to learn SUDDAN/WesVarPC for adjusting weights and design effects in complex samples. I am currently working with Dr. XXXX on the utility of biomarkers (Mib1) for predicting colorectal cancer development. I hope to continue studying biomarkers in your program and enhance my skills in statistical methods for correlated, longitudinal, clustered, and multi-level data.
Ultimately, I aspire to return to China to work in public health and hygiene. My home province, Yunnan, is particularly afflicted by disease. During my internship at the Yunnan Center for Disease Control (CDC), I gained firsthand experience working with individuals living with HIV/AIDS who had limited knowledge of the disease. This was one of my first experiences of the joy of being useful to those in need. Earning a PhD from your esteemed program will provide the foundation I need to become a world-class health professional and scientific investigator.
