I grew up in a poor household in the Philippines, where education is highly esteemed, but often underfunded. I discovered a path out of my circumstances through a talent and passion for Mathematics that was recognized throughout my school years. My talent and passion were enhanced by adopting a highly focused, committed, and determined approach to my work throughout my academic journey. My efforts were rewarded with school honors, a university scholarship, and bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of San Carlos (USC) in the Philippines, where I was invited to teach. I was later chosen to receive a teaching assistantship to study for a second master's degree in applied and computational mathematics at the XXXX Institute of Technology (XIT), which I completed in May 2008.
I worked for thirteen years as a permanent, full-time instructor at the University of Southern California, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses. During this period, I participated in various interdepartmental research projects, including collaborative work with Lauenstein University in The Netherlands on implementing a Geographic Information System in the pre-selected curricula of the College of Arts and Sciences at USC. My work on this project was the focus of my master's thesis at USC. It has always been my intention to give back by teaching, as a way of expressing gratitude for my own academic and economic progress, largely due to the dedicated and skillful education I received. However, I now seek to expand my horizons.
I believe I have made a difference to those I have taught, and I have gained a comprehensive understanding of my subject through many years of study and research. I am now seeking the new challenge of a Ph.D. program that will allow me to maximize my contribution to the world and my own country. I was therefore thrilled to discover your Biostatistics doctorate program at ____ University, which offers an opportunity to develop and apply statistical methodology to solving biological and public health issues. The program aligns perfectly with my requirements and allows me to achieve my goals.
I have thoroughly reviewed the description of the faculty and its work at ____ University. It accurately describes the dynamic, welcoming, and challenging academic environment I am seeking, where my talents can further flourish. I hope to contribute to research in areas related to public health, as I believe this would have the most significant impact in my home country of the Philippines.
The volume and quality of the research work I have undertaken in obtaining two master's degrees, along with extensive teaching experience, have provided me with an excellent understanding of successful research and the techniques involved in achieving it. This substantial research experience is highly relevant to a Doctorate program, making me an exceptional candidate for work at this level. My background also includes a considerable amount of interdisciplinary research.
I am aware that the program will attract many well-qualified applicants, and that the committee will face difficult choices. However, I strongly believe that I can make a significant contribution to the academic community and bring unique and valuable insights to my class from my background, studies, and research to date. I offer proven dedication, a strong work ethic, and an immense passion for applying Statistics to the betterment of humanity.
