Crafting a Purposeful MS Architecture Personal Statement

Growing up in Viña del Mar, Chile, I was immersed in a city of dreams, rich in diversity. On one side, a bustling metropolis teeming with music and tourists, and on the other, the Castillo Wulff and Palacio Vergara, reminiscent of Europe's grand dynasties. This fusion of nostalgia and youthful energy inspired me, steering me towards a path of studying and designing architecture. The city's blend of architectural styles, from historical art forms to modern functional designs, shaped my unique perspective, enabling viewers to explore new visual concepts and dimensions. Since childhood, I've pushed my creativity—and the viewer's eye—through painting, drawing, and photography, continually exercising my imagination, even during play.

At this point in my career, I feel I have explored every opportunity for growth and advancement. I am genuinely inspired and humbled by the extraordinary architects who have been my mentors and idols, enhancing my understanding of architectural standards and preparing me for graduate studies. Starting as a drafter, I've advanced through roles such as detailer, XXX designer, freelance designer, project architect, construction supervisor, and senior project architect. Working on numerous projects, including warehouses, apartment buildings, sports complexes, and corporate offices, has helped me shape design directions, study buildings as integrated systems, and address construction challenges, including material selection. With over thirteen years of consistent conceptual work in my academic and professional life, I've recognized a growing demand for architects with a multidisciplinary foundation to create designs incorporating sustainable, green building principles, site planning, and green materials research.

These insights will guide my graduate research, transforming my future business practices, the clients I serve, and my contributions to society. Architects have a responsibility to future generations, improving lives through sustainable development and acknowledging the fragility of our ecosystems. Practically, researching these critical areas will naturally build on my undergraduate studies in Environmental Design of Architecture. Through an academic partnership with the ____ Institute's School of Architecture, I aim to earn a Master of Architecture, enabling me to become a distinguished, licensed architect, and paving the way to an associate partner or studio director role at an international firm. I envision work that leverages my diverse experiences, cultural competence, bilingual skills, and international background.

I foresee a career involving travel, consultation, coordination, as well as my strengths in schematic design, design development, supervisory roles, and precision in construction documents. My travels across South America, the US, Canada, France, the Czech Republic, and Hungary have exposed me to the vast array of global architecture. In New York City, I've come to appreciate its architectural treasures, from cherished museums and institutions like XXX University to historical relics from the age of Empire, and the vibrant glamour of Times Square to unique sites like Dobbs Ferry and Bloomingdale Park. I've been fortunate to contribute to designing buildings, living spaces, and recreational areas in these settings. I can think of no better place to complete my graduate studies than the XXX Institute, my top choice for academic growth. Collaborating with emerging architects, creators, and innovators will inspire my work as I share my unique perspectives and experiences. I look forward to a scholastic journey that combines academics and professional development, as no other field has brought me such personal and professional fulfillment.
