I was still a legal minor when the United States occupied Iraq. But I noted this political development as highly significant, since I see the U.S. as a Judeo-Christian power and Iraq as a Muslim country bordering my own, Turkey. The Turkish government has selected me to learn how to become a sort of ambassador of peace, given the way in which the religious composition of the Middle East both gives rise to and propels political conflict. In addition to my exam scores, I may have been selected for this scholarship largely because of my facility with language, Arabic (fluent reader) and Farsi (a little), but especially English. I have always excelled at English. Living in English is beginning to feel natural. I like to think of myself as a representative of the Turkish people to the West. Turkish people want to become part of Europe and have relations with America in the same that the European Union has relationships with America. A stridently secular military in Turkey bolsters a tradition of secularism that resists domination by Turkey's Muslim majority. As a Muslim woman I am an excellent candidate to become a peacemaker, both at home and on the international level, supporting international organizations devoted to the vigilance of human rights issues in Turkey and other Asian countries. English has been my greatest struggle, to learn how to speak English like Americans is enormously difficult. But now we at least understand each other better and better and I even laugh a lot. I have been early exploring these dynamic since I was a child. MSW Autobiography African American Woman The original foundation of my desire to become a licensed social work professional with the MSW is the fact that I am an African-American woman who grew up in inner city America, in my case Brooklyn, and was subjected to many of the social ills that are so very common among predominantly black communities in our inner cities: neglected, abused, mistreated, abandoned—much if not most of this due to the substance abuse of those around me. This goes a long way to explain why I have given my very best for more than 10 years now to be the most effective substance abuse counselor that I can be. I now feel that I have the maturity and experience that is only matched by my level of enthusiasm, with all of them together empowering me to excel in your program at XXU. My greatest strength as a social worker is and will always be my own experience of survival of the abuse that I endured growing up in an environment plagued by rampant alcohol and drug abuse—the neighborhood where I played and through which I walked on my way to school. Having personally suffered for much of my life—not from my own substance abuse thank God—but from the substance abuse of family, friends, etc., mostly alcohol but other drugs as well; this has given me the strength to fight the evil with the power of the Lord by my side. I have long cultivated the wisdom to recognize the harm caused by substance abuse, especially to children and young adults—along with the tranquility to stop thinking about it for a while in my free time so that I can also help my family and friends along the way. As an African-American woman, I am also deeply disturbed that my race is radically overrepresented among those sick people who are homeless or incarcerated because of their illness—drug addiction. Along with a growing number of people in America, I feel that substance abuse should be treated as a public health issue rather than a criminal one. Serving the community has always been my special passion, dedicating my life to improving the lives of others. For the past ten years, I have worked as Substance Abuse Counselor in a correctional setting for men and women and with outpatient program services focused on Gender Responsive Therapeutic Community. My job entails facilitating groups, helping to find suitable housing for female parolees and their dependent children, and providing extensive individual counseling. I had a very hard time adjusting and often found myself either in the principal’s office or on punishment at home. I had this ball of anger inside of me. After being repeatedly suspended from one school, I would be shipped to another relative to attend school somewhere else. During my senior year at XXXX High School in California, I came in contact with a counselor named Ms. XXXX who empowered me by her kindness and authenticity. I promptly adopted her as a role model and decided then and there to become a social worker and help people like Ms. XXXX. I was really behind in credits and Ms. XXXX had me enroll at XXXX Polytechnic High School from 8:00 am to 11:00am to take three classes to earn extra credit, then I was to come back to McLane to complete the rest of my day as well as attending Fresno adult school from 5pm to 8 pm with extra tutoring on Saturdays. Also during my senior year I became pregnant with my daughter XXXX. She soon became another great motivation and my driving factor to finish high school. Ms. XXXX supported me in my pregnancy as well and gave me direction. All it took was one person to take an interest in a person to change that person’s course in life. Born and raised in New York and New Jersey, I am an American girl with a Greek family. I am fully fluent in my native language, Greek, which we use at home, but most of the time, I think in English, as much a New Yorker as anybody else. I feel strongly that I am a good fit for the library because I am a lifetime resident of the community and I have been working for local government for almost 20 years. I am already familiar with most of the financial aspects of the library and this will help me to excel as Director, exploring opportunities for new programs and additions that fit within our budget. Since I wrote the Human Resources Policy Manual for XXXX County and currently handle all internal investigation of personnel; my extensive experience in human resources will enable me to excel at the management of library employees. In fact, the management and training of employees represents the majority of what the Library Director does each day. At 46 years old, I feel like I am at my optimal moment to give my all as library director, with the experience and education that will empower me to excellence. Someone who thrives on solving problems, I have spent the past 25 years working in XXXX County in a variety of different settings, government, mining, volunteer and emergency services. The issue that I probably feel strongest about and would address throughout my tenure as Library Director if selected is the way in which poverty is concentrated among female-headed households with children in XXXX County. Single mothers and their children represent the most vulnerable members of our community and it would be a special honor for me as Library Director to work incessantly to assure that we are doing all that we can to assist and support the single mothers of our community and their children. A member of two community book clubs, I teach catechism at my church and volunteer at the soup kitchen. I am also a paramedic and I help out with XXXX General Hospital’s EMS Rescue in addition to teaching EMS and rescue courses through XXXX College. I also look forward to better connecting our local library to arts and entertainment and museum resources. My experience as Director of the XXXX Children's Theater Program will help me to come up with creative ideas that are rooted in our local community and our human resources. For about four months in 2008, I also shadowed the Library Director as part of my succession plan. I did not get to know my father until I was already in the 8 th grade. My mother raised me as a single mom, one block away from the library. I probably spent more time there than any of my friends which I see as the primary reason why I am now qualified to serve as Library Director. I am a very calm person, always in search of collaboration and teamwork, resolving conflicts, an active and effective listener and I am ready to begin as Library Director tomorrow. Letter of Appeal to Wave the GRE I write the following in support of my request that the GRE examination be waived as a requisite for my entry into your Master’s in Health Administration Program at the University of XXXX. I ask you to please take into account the many years of experience that I now have in medicine, management, and scientific investigation. Since finishing medical school, I have taught classes in medicine as well as helping students to prepare for medical board examinations. There are several aspects of my professional experience so far that I feel strongly contribute to my case that the GRE be waived. First, while I have chosen to concentrate on education and management rather than practicing medicine, I did pass all three Steps of the USMLE, a most rigorous and wide-ranging examination. Furthermore, I ask that it be taken into consideration that I have taught multiple subjects in the physical sciences at the college level: Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, and Biology at both XXXX and XXXX Colleges, in addition to training and testing medical students in physical diagnosis at XXXX Medical College. Mathematics of Finance Personal Purpose From my earliest years, my favored toys were puzzles and, throughout my life, I have found great enjoyment in analyzing problems and finding solutions to them. Predictably a facility with numbers and a love of mathematics became quickly apparent and I excelled in the subject throughout my school years. I regard myself as very fortunate to have discovered my métier so early and to have been given the opportunity to pursue its study so far and look forward to extending this knowledge within the program. I was raised in Nanjing which is one of China’s most prominent cities and a major centre of production and foreign investment. It was not possible to live in Nanjing without being aware of the burgeoning national and local economies and the effects, desirable and undesirable of their rapid expansion. My mother managed a local business and I was encouraged to take an interest in its progress and I did so with great enthusiasm. Because of this background, I have pursued an informal study of economics since my mid teens through regular reading of various periodicals, in addition to coursework in both macro and micro-economics during my bachelor degree studies. Having obtained my bachelor degree, I sought an internship in the area of finance and was fortunate in being offered analysis work with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. This experience was fascinating and fully confirmed me in my decision to applying my mathematical and analytical skills in the world of business and finance. My particular areas of interest in mathematics are algebra, calculus and probability which are of direct relevance to the program and that led me to a decision to pursue a major in applied mathematics. Since being awarded an excellent degree in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, I have carefully considered and researched various options and have concluded that your program offers the best means of applying and extending my knowledge and skills, providing a satisfying career path and maximizing my utility in the world. I am widely travelled within China, having visited Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. I have also visited Australia as well as the US. I have happily studied, worked and socialized with people of many cultural and social backgrounds and look forward to extending this experience within the program and to preparing myself to work in a multinational business environment.
