My volunteer activities consist of working regularly at the LA Mission serving food as well as helping Habitat for Humanity and other initiatives directed at the less fortunate members of our community. I have spent the last 17 years teaching and developing curriculums for English classes for the 7th through 12th grades. I monitor and assess students’ academic development and use this information to refine lesson plans, integrating technology into the curriculum, supplementing class lectures and developing students’ word processing and researching skills. I became fully convinced that Translation Studies at XXXX University was my first choice for graduate school when I learned that your curriculum includes a class in Turkish. English is my second best of 4 languages after my native Turkish; translation is my field. A young woman from Istanbul, my parents are well-educated and have always been most keen to talk about Turkish affairs and interests, especially international business. Thus, I grew up thinking of myself as an advocate for my country, seeking to promote its interests on the world stage. By adulthood, I came to focus on translation as the best way to achieve this goal, ready to travel, increasingly coming to see myself as a global citizen as well as a woman from Turkey. Most recently, struck by the horrors happening across the border in Syria for more than three years now, I have become interested in issues of peacemaking and conflict resolution, especially insofar as translation and interpretation studies might be useful in these areas. Russia has long been a very important trading partner for Turkey. My father encouraged me to learn Russian and it came easily since I began as a child, learning from the children of Russians living in Turkey who were friends of my family. Excelling in my undergraduate work in Translation and Interpreting Studies in Russian at University of XXXX resulted in my being awarded a scholarship from the Russian Federation to attend XXXX University for one year of full immersion in Russian in St. Petersburg (where I have recently arrived), so that I will be nearing fluency in Russian by the time I enroll at Edinburgh University next fall. My Russian may never become as good as my English, however, since I spent six months in Houston Texas as a teenager which did wonders for my English, which I have also worked very hard since childhood. In Houston, I also began learning Spanish, something that I look forward to taking advantage of as we celebrate international diversity at the University of Edinburgh. I also want very much to develop my thinking about translation and language interpretation from a multidisciplinary perspective in a way that is relevant to addressing the human issues of our day, especially migration. Turkey is full of desperate refugees fleeing violence in neighboring Syria and Iraq—all trying to get to Europe and many dying in the process. The International Relations Department at XXXX University has a central focus on these kinds of international humanitarian issues and I look forward to attending as many lectures in these areas as well. In August this year I visited Scotland and spent time in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Balloter (to see the Highland games), and finally Edinburgh. I was fortunate to be there while the fringe festival was on and I really fell in love with the city. There is nothing quite like walking down the royal mile catching some street acts performed in front of beautiful and historical stone buildings.

Learning the Science of Healing Together Medicine combines the practical application of the sciences, the need for lifelong learning and close interaction with people, and aptitudes that I have and want to use. The responsibilities of a doctor attract me. I have tried to experience as many aspects of medicine as possible. Shadowing a senior registrar in Oncology, seeing post-operative patients at the Royal Free Hospital London, and time in the Medical Physics department of East Dulwich Hospital showed me different views of hospital work. Two days with the Paediatric ENT specialist at St Helier Hospital made me realize the difficulties encountered and skills required in dealing with children. Visits to the hemodialysis and cardiology departments during a week's course for prospective medical students at the Royal Berkshire Hospital particularly interested me. The three months of voluntary work I did at the Berkshire Independent Hospital, talking to patients and assisting with administration, started me thinking about how a hospital is run. Attending the Medlink course confirmed my conviction that I want to be a doctor - I found the problem-solving aspect of diagnosis incredibly satisfying. All the lectures from different doctors on the areas they worked in gave me a perspective of the medical career structure and the other specialties needed. Building the Next Generation of Doctors and Nurses I have thoroughly enjoyed my voluntary work as it allows me to meet and work with a wide range of people. I started by visiting an older adults' home for six months and am now working at the Berkshire Multiple Sclerosis Centre, where I assist with a physiotherapy class. I have found this particularly rewarding, and my support and help with specific exercises allow more people to participate effectively. It has also helped me to appreciate that not all illnesses can be cured and that sometimes all that can be done is to improve the quality of life as much as possible. For the last six years, performing music has been an essential part of my life; it has helped me develop teamwork, concentration, and perseverance. I am now principal French horn in the Berkshire Youth Orchestra; in 2002, we toured Italy and France, including La Madeleine Summer Concerts in Paris. I have toured Ireland with the Central Berkshire Concert Band, where I am also the first horn. I play solo tenor horn in Holst Brass Band; we will be touring Germany in 2003. I hope to carry on playing at University to a high standard. My other main interest is the Air Training Corps, to which I have belonged for 4 years. I have taken several leadership courses and proficiency exams and am now the senior cadet in my unit. I am responsible for teaching younger cadets and organising events; this has developed my communication and problem solving skills. I regularly attend survival camps, hikes, problem-solving exercises and Duke of Edinburgh Award training. I have completed an RAF gliding scholarship by flying solo and am building up my light aircraft flying experience. ATC has given me the opportunity to develop my physical and mental stamina. I have extended my interest in science outside the school curriculum: I was chosen to attend Mathematics Master classes at Reading University, achieved silver in a Physics Olympiad, represented my school at a Salter's Chemistry Week at XXXX University and won a Foster Wheeler Engineering competition. By nature I am a determined individual and have achieved my goals. For example, I studied Mathematics As at home as I wanted to continue with five subjects. My ability to manage my time efficiently and work independently has enabled me to take part in a wide range of activities, in and out of school. I am confident that I would make a good doctor.

Hands-On Healing: Chiropractic Adjustment My path to and fascination with Chiropractic medicine began in the most unlikely of places, namely the football field of my high school. As a football player, the physicality of the sport was a playful extension of what I would later come to enjoy in my work, namely kinesthetic work, and hands-on experiences that became a way of life for me. I learned that I had a natural ability, a gentler hand when needed, one extended in caring, with the strongest of desires to heal. I learned early on the benefits and sheer joy of a healthy lifestyle, from eating right, to proper levels of exercise. Chiropractic medicine would provide me with the balance that I seek in my professional work, the holistic balance and approach to the patient, with a complete understanding of physiology with a constant eye towards preventative care. Earning my doctorate and board certification will enable me to bring my ambitions, goals my dreams to reality. Upon building my exposure in the field through helping individuals with physical limitations, I aim to bring my successes to private practice and use them as a jumping off point for sustainable contributions to the community. It is my strongest belief that a health community is a healthy family. Our approach to healthcare can be made that much more effective through strategic coordination of volunteerism in the form of outreach, and thus the healthcare profession can then go on to increase the quality of service, even on greater levels than before, all the way up to the national level. I bring with me to the medical program a solid academic foundation in undergraduate Health Science coupled with 90 credits of pre-med courses, and grounding in Biological Science combined with research assistant experiences. In the field, I have maintained half a decade of conceptual continuity, a commitment to EMT and Family Medicine assistant work, work that has practiced and solidified a great deal of my clinical acumen, and left me eager to learn that much more, and contribute on a larger scale than ever before. Earning my MD is more than a logical choice for my career, it is a natural one given my sensibilities and heartfelt desire to serve, learn and bring about positive outcomes for all of my patients. Moreover, I have actively sought out and procured volunteer experiences in nursing homes that have brought me into direct contact with seniors, an appreciation for their assorted needs and the caring working environment. What is more, the work increased my maturity, sense of responsibility, confidence, self-efficacy and interpersonal communication skills within a task-oriented environment. Further proof of my desire for lifelong learning can be found in my having earned EMT certification post-high school, immersing myself in many aspects of first-responder and emergency care. Restoring Health Through Manual Therapy The US healthcare system is only increasing its representation of diverse patients. I am not only fluent in Spanish, but also the Hispanic American experience, and feel I would be particularly sensitive to our Hispanic/Latino patients unique needs. In the most practical terms, I will be able to reach out to my Latino and Hispanic patients in their arterial language, increasing the accuracy of treatment, reducing error and increasing my patients sense of importance and relevance in the healing process. Palmer College stood out to me from the background noise of other schools and chiropractic programs. Here was not just the finest, but also the first chiropractic college ever in the history of the world. From this school, all other chiropractic programs were established by Palmer alumni. I would consider it a privilege and an honor to be able to trace the lineage of my training back to the very first Palmer graduating class. I won first place in a competition that involved the translation of a short story from Arabic into English when I was a student at middle school. It was at that point that I made my career choice and since then I have become increasingly fascinated by the contrasts and similarities between the two languages and have delighted in pursuing an understanding of the cultures from which the English language springs and in spreading interest in my own language and culture among English speakers, especially in the United States where Arab cultures and their language are still not very widely known or appreciated. The study of English has provided me with the key to many beautiful literary works that have never been translated into Arabic and its study has therefore ‘broadened my horizons’ considerably by teaching me about the culture, traditions, lifestyles and institutions of the US especially. I have also greatly enjoyed many of the classic English language films that have never been dubbed or subtitled into Arabic. It is my hope to assist in translating some of those works and films for the enjoyment and illumination of Arabic speaking audiences and also to translate some equally beautiful works, which are available only in Arabic, into English, to promote and share the, currently hidden, gifts that my culture holds for English speakers. I am aware that the translation of literature, especially classic works, carries with it significant responsibility as the translator necessarily becomes, to some degree, an author especially where linguistic roots and literary conventions may differ considerably. English and Arabic have evolved from very different roots and so the translation of one to the other requires perhaps more subtle skills, finesse and judgement than are usually required of those, for instance, translating from one European language to another. I am aware that this will call for an unusual level of commitment and diligence on my part to succeed within the program. I intend to complete my M.A. and then pursue a doctorate, also at XXXX, to fit me to teach English translation at a Saudi university and share my love and enthusiasm for this vital field of work with others. My ultimate ambition is to work for the Saudi Foreign Ministry as director of translation services. I hold a bachelor degree in English awarded by the King Khalid University with a grade of 3.5. The main elements of the program were: literature, linguistics and translation and I my interest in the latter was confirmed to me as the specialism for my future career. I have undertaken translation, technical translation, editorial work and interpretive translation and the use of translation computer programs both within in my degree program and in substantial voluntary extracurricular work and competitions for which I willingly surrendered much of my spare time. I worked as a volunteer on courses to teach foreign faculty students about the Arabic language and culture in the medium of both languages. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching and the opportunity to meet students from several different cultures and to introduce them to my language and culture. Sharing an enthusiasm for a subject that I love hardly seemed like work and I also learned much from my students during that time. My efforts were appreciated by the students and the faculty. I was presented with certificates of appreciation for my work by both the faculty and, to my delight, from the Dean. I greatly look forward to the opportunity to resume teaching in the future and look to the program to supplement and extend my skills in this respect. I know that research is an essential element of the program. I excited at the prospect of assisting in research and feel that my enthusiasm and curiosity will enable me to assist in advancing the art of translation. My husband works as Senior Engineer at Intel Corporation; his work is also 10 miles from home and he has been with Intel for 24 years. He fully supports me in every way, financially, emotionally, morally and professionally. Since we do not have any children, I can devote myself to dentistry 24/7. An Indian woman, Canadian citizen, and a permanent resident living in the USA for the last 14 years, when it comes to my profession, dentistry, I freely admit that I am a perfectionist. I have participated in multiple community service dental camps, going to Northern India twice and Costa Rica once. In June of 2013 I joined a team of doctors and traveled to Costa Rica for a week (on my expense) to treat a large group of underserved patients. I personally performed more than 50 extractions, mostly wisdom teeth, and this journey has helped to define my professional sojourn of service to the underserved. The Dental camp was organized by one of the local church missions and every facet of the experience was enormously uplifting, providing me with a great sense of accomplishment. The feeling that comes over me when I look into the patients’ eyes gazing up at me, as I were an angel come down from heaven to alleviate their suffering. Some held my hands and prayed with tears in their eyes. I feel that their blessings are invaluable for my soul. My vision of dentistry as service rather than business has also led me to spend the last 7 years treating mostly patients who receive public assistance; thus, while earning considerably less than I might have otherwise, I have been able to focus precisely on those sectors of society in which I have the greatest interest, those with the fewest resources who are the least likely to receive the oral health care that they need. While I am a skilled and accomplished practitioner, I seek further advancement in the area of Endodontics so as to further enhance the quality of care that I provide to my patients by staying fully abreast of cutting-edge developments in my field. I also seek further training so as to prepare myself for greater connection with academia in the future, perhaps serving as a clinical associate for a dentistry program. My application to medical school is probably most unique because of the fact that I am already a practicing pharmacist with extensive experience, ever since earning my PharmD with honors. The reason why I seek a career change at this point is because I hunger to care for patients directly, rather than only through their medication. I want to diagnose conditions, not just respond to the diagnoses of others. A problem solver, I love to figure out what is medically wrong with a patient and I want to be the one who orders the labs and imaging studies so as to develop a treatment plan and oversee it. I want to be fully responsible for my patients, not just their medication. Medicine offers a more in-depth study of the human body, physiology, and disease and learning is my foremost, lifelong passion. Thus, becoming a doctor is my central professional goal in life at this stage. I admire the way in which the excellent physician uses both her mind and her heart to heal her patients. Thinking on her feet, level headed at all times, calm even under stress—the doctor must be a master at multitasking, guiding the team—always from a patient-centered perspective. The heart is central to the equation, inspiring the confidence that is engendered by authentic compassion and devotion to the healing process. Practicing medicine appeals to my nature and character, someone who loves reading books to children, arranging flowers for the church, and preparing food and serving meals at soup kitchens. My parents brought me to America from Vietnam while I was still a child and life was a great struggle for them to raise their children and provide them with an adequate education, primarily because they both had to work numerous jobs throughout their lives to pay the bills. Thus, being accepted to osteopathic medical school will be a tribute to their struggle and triumph as well as mine. I was born in Saigon and my father who was a soldier in the South Vietnamese Army. When the Communists took over they not only imprisoned my father but would not even allow my mother to work legally because of my father's status as a political prisoner; so she had to work very far away from home often in other provinces where no one knew of her husband's status. I was generally left with my grandmother and relatives and shuffled from one home to another, constantly looking over our shoulders in fear of the Communists. Food was scarce and the basic amenities that I take for granted today were generally absent, a bed, table, chair, blankets, even clothes were difficult to come by. Nevertheless, these difficulties ultimately resulted in the opportunities that I enjoy today. of early For me, life must have a meaning and pain must have a purpose in order for joy to have a voice and for dreams to come true. Starting from scratch in the USA in 1997—I came to America at 5 years old with no English ability at all; my parents worked around the clock as cooks and dishwashers. However, I love learning and I understood the importance of seeking higher education; so I worked while I was in school to help my parents. While earning my BS in Biology at XXXX, I became deeply involved in and passionate about cancer research and enamored with the spirit of teamwork in our lab; how scientists depend upon one another to succeed. I completed a Senior Honor Thesis on lunasin, a chemo preventive protein extracted from soybean and presented my findings at XXXX's Research Honors Symposium in April of 2003. These days, I have become devoted to the osteopathic philosophy of treating the patient as a whole, mind, body, and spirit and building strong clinician-patient relationships, taking time to interview and consult with patients. I am also very much favorably impressed with osteopathic manipulation therapy (OMT). I want to correct the kinks in the spine or joints of my patients and relieve pressure or tension on the muscles that result in back or neck pain. OMT is an excellent way to alleviate pain without or in addition to medication with no side effects. I believe in OMT and want to practice it. This is why I registered and participated in the National XXXX Week and have just recently shadowed an osteopathic physician for six months. You will have many other applicants who have higher MCAT scores than I do. Born in Afghanistan, my memories of growing up first in Uzbekistan and then in Russia are not generally pleasant ones, given the troubles of the times on top of the economic difficulties. I was lucky that my parents and I were able to make our home in Portland, Oregon in 2008, when I was twelve years old, at least biologically. Legally I was older, but not emotionally. I am now actually 19 but my US passport says that I am 21. For a variety of complex reasons, this is what resulted from the immigration process and although I sometimes feel cheated out of 2 years existence, increasingly, I come to see this as an asset and I am most motivated to make the best of it. My heart is set on distinguishing myself as a physician who builds a career in the areas of Cancer Biology, immunology, and virology and I am pleased to be off to an early start. For a teenage girl born in Afghanistan and brought up in Russia, immigrating to the USA represented a great challenge. I remember asking myself: ‘Who am I?’ ‘Where do I belong?’ It was in this period that I realized how belonging can be a tough process. In time, I would learn that I belonged to myself. The most important thing that my unique formation has given me, my greatest gift, is my capacity with language. I am now a native or near-native speaker of 4 languages: Farsi, Russian, Uzbek, Urdu and English. As someone with such a diverse background, I feel especially fond of the great diversity of my home city, Portland, Oregon. I hope to return to Portland after completing medical school and practice medicine for the rest of my career. I look forward to using all of my languages in the care of Portland’s increasingly diverse population which includes speakers of all of my languages. I believe that every person must be recognized in his or her humanity. As someone that has experienced war, migration, discrimination, and poverty, I have always felt attached to and compelled by the problems of the world; thus, medicine became my inspiration and sparked my passion to help others. Throughout my adolescence, Doctors Without Borders have been among my principal heroes and this is what I dream of becoming at some point in time. I want to accomplish goals in my community as well, in addition to across the globe. Having a share in bringing humanitarian medical care to people in great need after disasters would be the culmination of my sense of joy. When I first moved to the U.S in 2008, I struggled with English but worked very hard, with my love for science easing my transition. I not only managed to master English in a short period of time, but I even excelled in high school and graduated a valedictorian—at the same time that I also did volunteer work and met my family and community responsibilities. My first research experience began in my junior year of high school, as I was involved in the Apprenticeship in Science and Engineering program (ASE). As an intern in this program I worked with a team of graduate students and my mentor Dr. Chang in the molecular biology research laboratory, where we investigated the naturally occurring plasmids and viruses of archaea, particularly the virus SSV1. My role in this research was to help with DNA cloning, sequencing, and protein purification. As a research volunteer at the Oregon Health and Science University, I learned a great deal about methods and clinical medicine, working alongside doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals. One special highlight was participating in population-based, clinical studies being conducted in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Screening patients for specific treatment protocols and collecting data from patients’ charts and bedsides was my first immersion experience and I immediately felt most at home. Along with working towards my BS Degree in Molecular Biology/Microbiology at XXXX University, I am also currently serving as a research intern in XXXX Biomedical Engineering Lab at XXXX Cancer Research Institute, working with health providers and graduate students on the development of 3D images of different types of cancer cells. On campus at XXU, I am a volunteer research assistant in Dr. XXXX’s research laboratory working on the synthesis of organic polymers. In addition, by volunteering in the cardiology unit at XXXX Medical Center, I have now gained invaluable experience and perspective on hospital life; it was not simple, sometimes heart-breaking, but my experience has confirmed my belief that I want this to be my future. During the course of the last two years of my clinical experience in the hospital, I have been able to observe the pleasant and the unpleasant sides of medical practice. I have fewer and fewer illusions and more and more hope and determination to excel. I now feel emotionally and intellectually ready for the rigorous challenges of medical school and the medical profession. The same determination and resiliency that have helped me to accomplish my goals up to now will enable me to achieve my personal and professional ambitions to become a doctor without boarders and help to promote healing, humanity and compassion at local and global levels. I am a young Saudi Arabian who is very devoted to the study of management information systems and I finished my undergraduate studies in this area last year, April of 2013. I seek a total immersion in the study of technology advances and their rapid applications because they have a most significant impact on human life. I have been in the United States for some time now working on my English intensively, full time, working very hard to bring my English communication skills up to the point where I will be able to excel in your distinguished and competitive program at XXXX University. I am currently studying in an intensive English immersion program at XXXX University and preparing to take the GRE and IELTS examinations. When I am not engaged directly with learning English, I continue to stay abreast of developments in the areas that are closest to my heart and in which I hope to distinguish myself in the future: data mining, decision making, and health informatics. I feel strongly that my undergraduate studies have prepared me well for your rigorous program. My first semester was challenging for me while I was adapting from high school to college courses. While my first semester grades were low, I rapidly improved I decided that in order for me to reach the academic goals that I had set, I needed to come up with a plan of action. This included being more attentive in class, working harder, and studying at the library where I could escape distractions. Most of all, however, I think that my grades improved dramatically because of my sheer passion for my major. By the time that I graduated I was ranked in the top 2% of my class. I learned a great deal throughout the course of my undergraduate studies, everything from business and operations management to computer languages and programs, becoming highly proficient in SQL language and c++ , Data Structure, and OOP. For me the most fascinating course of all was Database Systems; it taught me the importance of data organization, SQL and new techniques to manipulate data. I discovered that not only was the syllabus interesting, but I was excited about the problem solving techniques that we used during our group sessions. The hands on experience when visiting a company in our city and applying what we had learned towards creating a database for them were very exciting. It was very helpful that our teacher would meet with us after class for discussions and answer any questions that we had. As soon as I graduated I was passionate to start working and to do something with my life so I decided to build my own business, which turned out to be one of the most challenging undertakings of my life. I spent 16 hour days for some time building a food service business catering to our university cafeteria. I began with only one employee and we soon found ourselves serving 1000 students a day. I built a web website for the teachers so that they could order from up do date menu and get their order delivered to their office or pick it up. They would choose the item with the time of delivery and notification will appear on my phone and they will pay when they receive their order. I enjoy very much using technology to improve business and to stay ahead of the competition. Having the support from my family and pushing myself to the limit paid off and building a business by doing everything myself from janitor to public relations and accounting, was a very valuable experience which I feel has helped to prepare me for graduate school. My business venture has taught me pragmatism and realism and helped me to further appreciate the importance of focusing on what works, and what does not. I have learned to think independently and to follow my dreams. I handle stress very well and multitask with ever greater efficiency, driven by the confidence that I have cultivated in myself and my ability. After my food service business was up and running, I accepted a position as IT support and maintenance supervisor at a high school where I also soon began working as a Lab Instructor. I also began working part time as a Database Developer at the Alaqssa Computer Center. I was always eager to learn new aspects of developing database solutions; I started with, Java, Oracle, C # and SQL Server. I first heard about DM from my teacher when my colleagues and I were developing special database software for the Workforce Ministry in my city. I did a presentation to show my partners how DM could be useful for their software, especially for sharing job opportunities with appropriate government institutions around the city. I was ecstatic that I had learned a new method to utilize data more effectively. My last professional position before leaving Saudi Arabia for the USA was working as a programmer system analyst at the Royal Commission Medical Center in my city, XXXX. I especially enjoyed working with so many people from different culture backgrounds in this position and I have come to better understand the importance of fully embracing and celebrating diversity as information system developers. I very much enjoy the team work aspect of computing technologies and served as part of a team, for example, designing and implementing blood donation systems which connected the demand with the supply and make it easier to distribute the blood based on hospital demands, saving time and money. We also developed a system for pharmacies so that they could medicine could be prescribed electronically. This experience in the development of pharmacy prescription systems, in particular, helped me to better appreciate the enormous opportunities that exist for greater leverage and development in information technology so as to improve the efficiency of our health care systems. I deeply enjoy every aspect of our work, from the initial analysis and find out what we need and what are we missing. Earning a Master’s Degree is now the logical next step for me, especially since I have had a full scholarship from my government to complete not only a Master’s Degree but to also study on for the PHD. I chose the field of information system development because I find it fascinating, challenging, and I am excited by the high-demand for well trained people in our field, as well as the enormous contribution that one has the opportunity to make to human organization and development, socially as well as economically. I find this to be particularly true with respect to my home country of Saudi Arabia where there is great demand for well-trained people in IS in both private and government sectors, including academia. Still only 22, I want to devote my life to an industry that is hopefully dying out, the sooner the better: petroleum engineering. I anticipate that while petroleum use will outlive me for sure, it is my hope that the consumption of petroleum based products on a large scale can be phased out during my lifetime and replaced by renewable and cleaner forms of energy. I want to devote my professional life to this transition, with an eye towards safeguarding the environment in the face of the continued use of oil, to the extent to which it is possible to do so. I have been working very hard towards becoming a professional in the gas and oil industry and will complete my BS in Geology at the University of XXXX this coming May. I hope to continue my education on a graduate level in your distinguished Geology Program at XXXX University (XXXU) this coming Fall semester. I also hope to complete my MS Degree in Geology at the same time that I complete the Geosciences Petroleum Graduate Certificate Program at XXXX. In fact, this program is one of the foremost reasons why XXU is my first choice for graduate school.
