I was born and raised in India and now reside in the United Kingdom. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Life Science and the Post-Graduate Diploma in Advanced Clinical Research awarded by the Indian Institute of Clinical Research. My original goal was to become a physician because of a wish to positively affect the world around me. I studied Life Science at undergraduate level with the intention of using this degree as a stepping stone to enable me to enter medical school. However, while studying, I spent some time working as a medical assistant with a physician, Dr. Qureshi, who had a deep interest in medical research and this fired a strong interest in that subject in me. My mentor told me that there was a greater potential benefit to mankind by being a dedicated medical researcher than by becoming a physician and this made sense to me. He also recognized in me the essential characteristics of a good researcher; diligence combined with intelligence and an ‘eye for detail’ and so he encouraged me to pursue higher studies in medical research. My undergraduate studies had already provided me with knowledge of zoology, human physiology and exposed me to research techniques and so I decided to take his advice. Following the award of my Bachelor’s degree, and with my mentor’s encouragement, I sought entry to the prestigious Institute of Clinical Research India (ICRI) an internationally recognized ‘Centre of Excellence’ in medical research. Through much hard work and single minded commitment, I succeeded in passing the entrance examination and gaining entry. I was awarded the Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Clinical Research by the Institute following an intense one year program specializing in pharmacovigilance, quality assurance and medical audits. Following the award of the Diploma, I undertook a further year’s study in Clinical Research at Cranfield University in the U.K. During this time, I obtained an insight into Translational Medicine and other important areas of clinical research. I also studied methodology, biotechnics, bioequivalence, clinical trial, audits, designing trials, roles of CRA and CRC’s, drug development, drug delivery, standard operation procedures and, my favorite, medical writing. During this time, I was selected to act as a research assistant for Dr. James Green, a noted Urologist and Head of the Clinical Research Dept. at Whipps Cross Hospital. I undertook data interpretation, metanalysis, literature review, data extraction for patients involved in clinical trials, preparation of proforma and statistical analysis. At the same time I was preparing my dissertation on post operative urinary infection and retention in hip and knee replacement patients. It was my original intention to pursue a Master’s degree at Cranfield but have concluded that a program in the United States and especially at the University of Texas is the best route to help me to reach my goals. In addition to my research work and studies, I undertook a variety of extra-curricular activities at Cranfield, having been selected because of my exceptional organization and communication skills. Among these activities was a voluntary role with Cancer Research UK during which I was the main contact for patients recruited for clinical trials by such companies as GSK, Astra Zeneca, Roche and Pfizer. These activities required effective team work and team leading and have been of immense value in my personal development. I look forward to bringing the personal skills that I have developed in further voluntary activity on the Texas Campus. I have come to appreciate that Clinical Research is one of the basic keys to good public health and is an area of study that has become my passion. My country, India, is increasingly recognized as an important ‘player’ and preferred partner for clinical trials and desperately needs good clinical researchers both to undertake research and to train the next generation in this vital discipline. It is my initial goal to acquire the higher level skills and knowledge to enable me to become an excellent researcher and ultimately to take up a position as head of a clinical research organization whilst writing on and teaching the subject. Despite the fact that I was a practicing physician in my native India, and have successfully completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health here in the United States, I want very much to return to school again because I have become convinced that becoming a Physician Assistant is what I most want to do professionally, for the balance of my career. I grew up in a family where education was highly valued. As I was growing up I found myself increasingly attracted to the mysteries of the human body. During the third year of my Medical school I liked several aspects of my different clinical rotations, but I found that the role of primary care physician most closely matched my interests and abilities. In India, I had worked part time as an assistant with my uncle who is a Family Practice physician. I was really influenced by his personal qualities and ideals. He believes that one should treat a patient like a family member. Familiarity with the family's environment is essential in performing a complete assessment and treatment of the patient's condition. Preventive medicine was one of the specialties that caught my interest while I was in medical school. I felt that by pursuing MPH in USA, I would be able to combine the research and clinical aspect of medicine to contribute effectively to health care. During my Masters' of Public Health career in University of Illinois at Chicago, I had been privileged to work with the Great Lake Center (a WHO collaborating center). With my clinical research experiences at University of Illinois at Chicago and Cook County Hospital, I learned various research methodologies and grant preparation. I was born in Vietnam and left there as a refugee with my family at the age of three. We lived in a refugee camp in Thailand for over two years and moved to the United States when I was six years old. Medical care, food and clean water were fairly restricted in the camp. However we did have the services of a pharmacist. Though very young, I was aware that this person gave people things that made sick people healthy once again. To my childish mind, this appeared to be some kind of magic and I decided that I should like to give sick people ‘magic’ medicine one day. Soon after arriving in the US, my parents started their small catering business. They worked about 70 hours a week each and I was expected to help as soon as I was able. When in my mid-teens, the child of a family that we knew had started a pharmacy program and her family was immensely proud. I recalled my childish interest in pharmacy and, wanting my parents to be proud of me too, I decided to make this my goal. I was the first person in my family to go to college however, I had little idea of what to expect and was not prepared for the academic rigors of the program and faced various personal problems during it. Consequently my grades were not good enough to apply to pharmacy school. I felt ashamed that I had let my family down and was in tears at my graduation ceremony. This shame fired in me a determination to make my parents proud. One of my friends introduced me to a non-profit organization called SAP-VN (Social Assistance Program for Vietnam). I was initially involved in events to raise funds to build schools in Vietnam and to finance medical teams who provide basic health care and carry out orthopedic operations on children but my interest and involvement increased. I have now been to Vietnam three times with the mobile health care mission and this has changed my whole outlook on life. One day I saw a thin little girl in a torn and dirty top staring intently at everything going on in the pharmacy room that we had set up. I knew that I would have been that little girl if my parents had not taken the risks involved in escaping Vietnam and I became vividly aware of the weight of responsibility to make the very most of the opportunities that I was fortunate enough to have been given. Armed with fresh determination and sense of direction and with the encouragement of pharmacists working with the SAP-VN, I returned to school to retake classes in chemistry and biology and took a job as a pharmacy technician in a retail pharmacy. I now have substantial experience of retail pharmacy. I have carried out the whole range of technical duties that I am qualified for. I am also familiar with handling insurance claims, learnt about common drug interactions and working in an effective team. I have also learned a great deal about the patients, their problems and the vital importance of their medication to them. The cost of medications represents a substantial proportion of some elderly patients’ incomes indeed some say that they wonder whether they are worth the cost! It hurts to see people who have worked all their lives but struggle to pay for the means to keep them alive. It is my ultimate goal to be involved in medication therapy management in order to help patients obtain the optimum benefits from their medications and by identifying, resolving and preventing medication related problems. I also hope to apply my knowledge to help patients save money by suggesting cheaper effective alternatives to them. I am especially interested in assisting in research in the area of customized drugs based on the patient’s DNA. I am aware of the vital importance of cultural awareness and sensitivity, especially in health care. I have happily studied, worked and socialized with people of many cultural and social backgrounds. I look forward to extending this experience of other cultures and sharing my own with my colleagues in the program. I am aware that pharmacy programs are very competitive and attract many well qualified applicants. However, I do consider myself to be a very good candidate. I have now matured, am fully focused on my objective and have learnt the necessary lessons from my earlier academic career. I am a young man from Saudi Arabia who has a natural affinity with the study of economics. I am concerned that the field of economics is not given sufficient weight or importance in the Saudi academic world and I would like to work to change this by teaching the subject in Saudi Arabia in the future. I hope to labor to give greater prominence to the study of economics in our systems of higher education. I also hope to start my own enterprise in the future dedicated to helping people to make well-informed business and financial decisions. Surprisingly, for all its wealth, the study of finance and economics is not highly developed in my home country and there exists a naiveté about financial matters which has led to a number of scandals and misjudgments that have resulted in very substantial losses to individuals and institutions. These situations arose through dishonesty and/or a lack of basic financial and economic understanding. There are a growing number of business failures in Saudi arising from a lack of appreciation by entrepreneurs that the economy is no longer immune from problems in the global economy and to take account of this fact. The economy is also affected to some extent by the requirements that arise in an Islamic model of financial management, this imposes unusual constraints on those making financial decisions and its effects have not been fully explored or quantified. I hope to be part of the solution to these problems and seek entry to the program for this reason. My work in financial management has naturally required an understanding of basic economic theories. However the extraordinary circumstances applying in the last few years have persuaded me that a fuller appreciation of the larger macroeconomic ‘picture’ is required in order to permit me to assist individuals and companies to make properly informed financial and business decisions. My eventual goal is to set up a company devoted to providing high quality financial advice in Saudi Arabia and would include an economic research arm to assist in providing the most effective advice. It would also be my intention to undertake ongoing research and to teach economics at a Saudi university. While I am, naturally interested in ‘making a living’, I also seek to ‘make a difference’ by providing a level of expertise and service not available to individuals or small businesses at the moment in Saudi Arabia. The US is at the ‘cutting edge’ of economic study and research and I realize that it is necessary to study here to acquire the level of knowledge and the skill set that I seek and, ultimately, to share with others in Saudi Arabia. I have carefully researched the available Master’s programs and have concluded that the one offered by XXU is ideally suited to my purposes. The program emphasizes macroeconomic analysis and current research and it is exactly those areas in which I seek to acquire the advanced knowledge to enable me to achieve my goals. I am particularly interested in the Financial and Monetary Economics elective and in assisting in research in this area of study. While I cannot claim to be widely travelled, I did spend several months in England studying English and this had given me valuable insights into western culture. I have also happily worked, studied and socialized with people of various cultural and social backgrounds and look forward to extending these experiences within the program. I am aware that the program will attract many well qualified applicants and the committee will have difficult decisions to make. However I genuinely regard myself as an excellent candidate. I shall be able to share insights into the Saudi economy which will be of value to the academic community and also those acquired in my studies and work in financial management. I was small when my cousin died from a congenital aortic stenosis. Heartbroken, I came to relive the experience over many years later as I observed countless underprivileged cardiac patients in India who would soon die from lack of adequate medical care. I see the medical care giver as noble, which has inspired me to pursue a career as a PA. I have begun my studies as a paramedic, and look forward to having the opportunity to prove my study skills in a very rigorous program such as yours. .I have volunteered at a hospital and later at an ambulance corporation, and I have had the privilege of attending to a wide variety of patients with many distinct characteristics and challenges. I hope very much to be accepted to your PA program because of the profound joy that I experienced from connecting with people and serving their medical needs. Having known since childhood if not adolescence that I wanted to make my mark in society as a health care worker, I enthusiastically launched myself into the study of the Physical Sciences and earned my undergraduate degree in Biological Science, putting in a lot of extra effort and taking very heavy course loads in order to complete the BS Degree in only three years, during which I also became a licensed EMT. As a certified EMT officer, I provided initial diagnoses of patients and performed emergency medical procedures. The skills that I developed were based on my natural strengths: connecting with people and empathizing with their pain, so that I could treat them most effectively. By having this profound privilege of saving lives, I am especially grateful to the opportunity to give something back to my community and assist those in real need of succor. After making up my mind to pursue a career as a PA, I soon began shadowing one, Ms. Stacy Entin, during all her shifts for an entire week. I was able to deepen my appreciation for both how important but yet how difficult it can be. I realized how crucial it is to spend quality time with patients, making the patients feel comfortable so as to receive and provide adequate information and background for an accurate diagnosis, maintaining all communication channels open, thus paving the way for healing. I am convinced that being an excellent PA requires almost limitless passion which is my greatest strength. I most look forward to and derive my happiness from direct and sustained patient interaction; I treasure the fact that it is the PA that gets to spend the most direct time with patients, and this is what I thrive on. I am especially interested in doing research in Cardiology and would like very much to build a professional specialization as a PA serving with a distinguished cardiologist. I am especially enthused about recent clinical trials that explore different ways of avoiding transplants using LVAD or RVAD wire. I am convinced that in due course, such promising techniques will make healthcare both more effective and less invasive, at the same time that it becomes increasingly affordable for almost everyone. The Physician Assistant program at XXU has a well-designed curriculum that balances academic education with well supervised clinical practice experiences in a variety of disciplines and I am very excited about the opportunity to study in each one of these disciplines In the clinical practice sessions, I shall hope to build upon my volunteer, EMT, and shadowing experiences while learning about a broad range of perspectives and strategies, and technological advancements for increasingly advanced medical care. The MS program at XXU will provide me with the education and experience that I need to become a PA at a hospital and interact with a wide variety of patients. Throughout the course of your program I also want to spend a significant amount of my free time devoted to the study of cardiology, especially advances in heart surgery, so as to be prepared for entry into an exhilarating career at the cutting edge of medical advances in cardiology. When I first dissected a frog in the ninth grade, I was thrilled to witness the unseen elements that sustained a living creature. I felt intrigued about how the various organs worked and contributed to the robust health of the organism. I was keen to find the answers to questions in my biology class and thrived especially on the study of anatomy with a great thirst for the first-hand examination of the vast array of organs, nerves, and other systems that drive life in even more primitive form such as the t of the frog. Today, as a young professional, I am still driven by this same thirst for scientific knowledge in the area of biology, which is why I completed my undergraduate studies in this area and why I think that I am a strong candidate for your program. I first became attracted to a career as a Pathologist Assistant as I began to research the field as an undergraduate student. Well aware of the fact that I needed additional training and experience in a medical field, I enrolled in and completed an EMT-Basic Program. I learned how to perform thorough assessments of patient symptoms and administer efficient and effective care. I especially relished the hands-on training sessions, as they reassured me of my basic strengths and reinforced my caring nature. More recently, I have just been accepted into a Medical Laboratory Technology Program. I am now working in close association with pathologists to identify and administer suitable medical tests to patients. Along with my previous professional and volunteer experiences, I have extensive experience at analyzing and evaluating data, preparing reports, and working with software. My volunteer work in hospice with the Healing Hearts Service Club has helped me to become an effective caretaker and communicator. Now I feel strongly that I have the appropriate tool kit and professional maturity to excel in your program.

I am black/Haitian, born in Haiti and raised in New York and Florida. I hold the degrees of B.A. (History) awarded by the UXX and Doctor of Jurisprudence awarded by XXXX University College of Law. My ultimate goal is to obtain a Ph.D. degree and to teach and practice law. A passion for history, especially as it relates to the relationship between blacks and whites in the United States, naturally fired an interest in the law as it was applied to legitimize slavery and, ultimately, to liberate African-Americans from the degradation of slavery and to reduce discrimination against them. For this reason, once I had obtained my B.A. in history, I sought to extend my knowledge of the law and successfully pursued the J.D. degree. My desire to go to graduate school arises from a desire for a fresh challenge, to stretch myself academically and to broaden my knowledge generally in those areas in which I have developed special interests. I also possess a reverence for education that arises from an early background of extreme deprivation. My specific interest in the MLA program arose because I am attracted by its interdisciplinary nature. My interests are quite wide and cover, among other subjects, history, law, philosophy, economics and political science. The program will enable me to undertake a broad field of study including several of my particular areas of interest. As an alumnus of the UXX, I am aware of the friendly, positive and challenging academic environment it provides and look forward to returning to it. I am particularly interested in studying Social and Political Thought; the historical study of social and political ideas and how they have affected the real world and, more importantly, how they might do so in future. I believe that my study of history and my deep interest in politics will enable me to excel in this area of study. My future career plan is to pass the Florida Bar exam and to practice law focusing on Criminal Law, Torts and immigration with a view to assisting the disadvantaged. Once I have some professional experience, it is my hope to pursue a Ph.D. in Social Philosophy in order to undertake study and research into such matters as economic inequality, neighborhood and spatial segregation, poverty, changing family structures, race and ethnicity, immigration, educational access and quality, political inequalities and participation and comparative and institutional studies of social policy particularly in the U.S. and western Europe. In the long term, I hope to practice law as a civil rights attorney, teach at university level and to publish work on legal and social issues. I believe that I am a competitive candidate for the program because my ‘generalist’ interests fits exceptionally well with the interdisciplinary nature of the program. I have a proven academic record in topics related to those that I shall be studying and I believe that this will also enable me to ‘add value’ to my class. I am confident that I can excel within the program because of my passion for the topics available to study and that this will provide benefits for both myself and the academic community. I was born in New York and raised in Georgia. I am of Italian descent and speak English and Italian. I hold the Bachelor’s degree in Biology awarded by XXXX University in 2010. It is my goal to qualify and to work as a Physician’s Assistant and, in this way to make a meaningful contribution to society. Although brought up in a household with two physician parents, it was by no means a foregone conclusion that I should enter one of the healthcare professions. This environment did, however, fire a passionate interest in Biology throughout my school years and this was inevitably the subject of my Bachelor degree and during this time I developed a special interest in Human Biology. Having gained an appreciation of the human body as an astonishingly sophisticated set of mechanisms, the ‘human’ element began to fascinate me. It became clear that the person is more than a wonderful machine and I have become increasingly interested in such things as the effect of disturbances in the balance of body chemistry, community environment and personal choices all have on personal well being. The possibility of a career in healthcare then began to attract me. I was fortunate in that my parents’ personal knowledge and wide professional contacts enabled me to investigate the possibilities comprehensively. I met and spoke with nurses, physician’s assistants, office managers, doctors and a number of other healthcare professionals and gained an appreciation of their different roles and the relevant academic requirements. I concluded that the role of physician’s assistant would fulfill my personal goals while allowing me to make a significant contribution to society. From observing my parents, I am aware of the demands made on those in the healthcare professions but also of the enormous satisfaction that can be gained. I know that there are people who are difficult to help and that there can be bad days as well as good. I have been exposed to all aspects of the profession since childhood and firmly conclude that I want to ‘make a difference’ as my parents have by their dedication and solid work ethic. Having made the decision to pursue this career choice, I took a position in a doctor’s office as a medical assistant and have been able to observe excellent doctors and nurses at their work. I have also worked voluntarily in an ER department for over 100 hours. These activities have provided me with the opportunity to interact with patients, for instance when measuring vital signs. I have also acquired an appreciation of the importance of non-verbal communication in providing healthcare and I look forward to increasing my knowledge in this skill. My related work experience has totally confirmed me in my choice and I am very excited at the prospect of joining the program and ultimately working as a physician’s assistant. Although my preparation for entering the program has not involved any formal course of study, I have excelled in topics such as organic chemistry, advanced biological concepts and physiological processes in the human body during my Bachelor degree studies. I have no doubt that I can succeed in the program, and indeed excel as I bring both proven academic ability, relevant academic background and, most importantly, a passionate interest in the topics covered in the curriculum. Perhaps the most important influence that has shaped the person I am today is my upbringing in a traditional family-oriented Bengali culture. My family has been an important source of support in all of the decisions I have made. I was taught the three basic tenets of ‘good words, good deeds, and good thoughts’ and these have always been my guiding principles in life. Not only do I try to do things for others, but I always push myself to be the best that I can be in all aspects of my life. I hold a B.S. degree in Business Management. I speak English and Bengali and am conversational in Urdu, Hindi and Spanish. It is a long way from Bangladesh to Brooklyn and in more than a geographical sense. I have made a journey, with my family, from a very poor, third world country to holding a degree and having a management position but my journey is not yet over. I have aspirations to move further and higher in my career and your program will be of enormous assistance in helping me to fulfill the professional and personal potential that I know I have. I have recently given birth to my first child and have left my job to care for her. This time at home presents me with a great opportunity to commence my M.S. studies, which I intend to continue when I return to work. Your on-line program will enable me to do both. I became aware at an early age of the enormous opportunities that a good education can open up to anyone willing to apply themselves. My short term goals are to excel in the M.S. program and then obtain a senior management position, preferably in a hospital. My first experience of management was within my father’s construction business. This was a very demanding and rewarding experience involving a wide range of duties and provided an excellent ‘training ground’ in business and management. I also have five years recent experience as a program director and manager at New York Presbyterian Hospital. I have thoroughly enjoyed my work which has included a variety of duties and responsibilities. I have particularly enjoyed the leading of project teams to successful conclusions in improving procedures and systems relating to hospital finance. Many of my senior colleagues at the hospital held M.S. degrees and I see obtaining the qualification as the natural next step in advancing my career prospects. Ultimately, I intend to pursue a PhD in Management. I have carefully considered the contents of your MS program and am very excited at the prospect of participating in it. In fact, my desire to take part in the online MS Program is a further reflection of my keen determination to continue along the academic path I am aware that there will be many well qualified applicants for the program. However I am convinced that I can ‘add value’ to my class from the variety of my professional experiences, my personal qualities and, not least, the level of commitment that I intend to apply in order to excel within the program.

I am Chinese, raised in Beijing and now living in Boston. I anticipate the award of the B.S. degree in Leadership from XXXX University in July of this year. My goal is to complete the M.S. degree in Project Management and ultimately to return to China to set up my own business. I believe that participation in the program will enable me to achieve my goals. I am attracted to the program by the breadth of the curriculum and the significant exposure to ‘real-world’ projects which participation will offer. Such knowledge and experience will, I believe, be of enormous value to me in starting a business since I will, at least initially, be combining many roles. Once my business begins to expand, the wide range of knowledge and skills gained will also enable me to delegate and monitor very effectively. I believe that the studies towards my Bachelor degree have provided me with an excellent base on which to build. They have equipped me with knowledge and skills in several areas relevant to the Master’s program, such as finance, organizational behavior and business law, together with a familiarity with general management concepts and techniques. I have very much enjoyed my time in the College of Professional Studies which has provided a very positive, rigorous and challenging academic environment and look forward to continuing my studies there. It is my hope to undertake research in an area or areas that relate to new business set-ups to assist me in reaching my goal of founding a successful enterprise and assisting others to reach theirs. I am also interested in researching into ‘stalled’ and troubled projects. In the long term, it is my hope not merely to found a successful business, but also to enable others to succeed by being an example of success and by offering my future employees the encouragement to work and study their way to achieving their own personal and professional goals. I would also seek to pass on the knowledge and skills gained in the program to other small business owners and potential owners in my home country. China has many entrepreneurs but there is a lack of available formal business education for small business owners. I hope to assist in correcting this situation to some degree. I have travelled widely throughout Europe and Asia and have lived in both China and the United States. I have happily studied and socialized with people from many different cultural and social backgrounds and look forward to widening such experiences within the program. I have undertaken voluntary work in the Children’s Hospital in Boston, helping to scan patients’ records. I have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and hope to continue to give my time in this way. I have successfully studied at degree level in a second language. I believe that this demonstrates my diligence, commitment and determination. I also consider myself to be adaptable and intellectually curious. I am enthusiastic in everything I undertake and am a good ‘team player’ who readily shares and gives credit to others. I believe that these characteristics will enable me to obtain maximum benefit from the program. I undertake to devote all my energies, not merely to participating but to excelling in my studies. I am aware that the program will attract many well qualified applicants. However, I genuinely consider myself to be an excellent candidate because of the relevance of my academic career to date, my personal characteristics and, most of all, because of my passion for business related study. I am an Arab woman born and raised in Damascus, Syria now living in Amman, Jordan. I hold a Bachelor degree in Pharmacy awarded by the Arab International University, Syria in 2009. I speak Arabic and English and some French. During and since my graduation, I have become increasingly interested in research and have a strong desire to pursue a degree that is specifically related to this discipline. I want to learn as much about research techniques as possible and to acquire skills in applying them whilst undertaking advanced research projects. It is my hope to devote myself to research in order, ultimately, to assist in the effective prevention, control and treatment of various diseases. There is a lack of research experience in my home country and I hope to assist in righting this situation. The M(Res) course is ideally fitted to my interests and goals. I particularly wish to study in the UK because of the high standard of teaching provided and the demanding and challenging academic environment they provide. I am currently receiving training at the Jordanian National Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Genetics in the Stem Cells Department. This training has included the culturing, purification and isolation of stem cells using a high quality technique using autoMACS, MidiMACS, gentleMACS and ClinMACS and analysis of samples using Flow cytometry. I have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement in this project work which has fired in me a fascination for research work and particularly into stem cells that I now wish to extend. This training has also provided me with experience of working as a member of a project team which has been very useful to me. My particular areas of interest are stem cells and regenerative medicine and I would hope to be involved in projects relating to these topics during the course. Specifically I am interested in the potentialities of stem cells for differentiation and in studying specific cell types with determined functions in certain organs. I also seek to advance the understanding of the molecular mechanisms controlling stem cells differentiation and survival. During my undergraduate studies, I volunteered to work in a team working in Syria studying the cardiovascular risk factors in that country. This involved me in obtaining completed questionnaires, measuring blood pressure and BMI. This was my first involvement in medical project work and was both fascinating and productive. My long term goal is to work in a medical research institute focusing on stem cell research and collaborating internationally with other research institutions in sharing the fruits of their work. I have travelled in Europe including many childhood visits to France when my mother was studying there. I have also travelled widely in the Middle East. I am interested in cultures other than my own and look forward to collaborating with students and faculty members from a variety of cultures and backgrounds and to sharing insights into my own. I have carefully considered the course content and am confident that I have the academic skills to excel in it. I also believe that I possess the attributes to be an excellent research specialist. I am extremely inquisitive and a creative thinker, I am also very persistent in pursuing my goals. I enjoy team work and get along well with others but am also able to work happily alone. I am aware that the course will attract many well qualified applicants and that difficult decisions will have to be made. However, I genuinely believe that I am an excellent candidate. I can offer an excellent academic record, a solid work ethic, some relevant research experience and, not least, a passion for research.

I am a Nigerian, born and raised in Nigeria. I lived in Holland for 4 years as a child and have lived in the United States since 2006. I speak English and also some Dutch, French and Spanish at varying levels of competence. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration awarded by XXXX University in 2010. My long term goal in applying for the program is to return to Nigeria and to be an agent for positive change by applying and sharing the advanced knowledge and skills with which the program will equip me. My interest in Economics was fired by an excellent and inspiring teacher during my early high school studies in Nigeria. This teacher brought Economics alive and made us clearly aware that it was a study that could be profitably applied in our own everyday lives. Mr. Amaechi made Economic theory relevant to us and to our families and to our country. I still vividly recall that class in which he introduced us to the concept of ‘opportunity cost’ and the comparison of a ‘need’ and a ‘want’. I was fascinated then and remain so to this day. During my Bachelor degree studies on the topic of Economic Development, I was required to read ‘The End of Poverty’ by Jeffrey Sachs and ‘The Bottom Billion’ by Paul Collier which books I still constantly re-read. These writers fired an interest in the relation between health and economic performance and gave me a determination to pursue this area of study at post-graduate level, especially in its effects on African national economies. My father has also been a great influence and significant role model. He has been very successful in his own energy business and has provided me with a privileged upbringing for which I shall always be grateful. His success was achieved by honesty, determination, focus and persistence and he would settle for no less from me in my studies and my life. It is my ultimate intention to pursue an MBA degree and then to join my father’s energy business. However I also intend to share the advanced knowledge and skills that I hope to acquire to assist business owners and potential entrepreneurs in Nigeria. I also intend to set my own enterprise, or enterprises to assist my country’s development and add real value to the country’s economy and the well being and health of its people. For this reason I am especially interested in undertaking research related to Economics as it relates to health and to be enabled to provide expertise to government departments and N.G.O’s to ensure the appropriate and efficient distribution of health related aid. I am also interested in research relating to the Economics of Energy as this is the subject of my father’s business but is also highly relevant to the Nigerian economy generally. As you will be aware, Nigeria is an exporter of electricity whilst failing to provide a reliable supply internally. I would hope to be able to contribute to reducing the inefficiencies and problems that give rise to these kinds of problems. I am aware that the program will attract many well qualified applicants. However I genuinely consider myself an excellent candidate because of the relevance, to my goals, of the topics emphasized in the program, the relevance of my own studies to date and significant insights that I shall be able to bring from a background spent in an emergent economy with massive potential but numerous problems delaying its fulfillment.
