Many of the motivations for my desire to start graduate studies in Political Science at sixty-three originate from my early significant human, civic, and professional experience during my service in the Israeli Air Force from 1973 to 1979. Initially as a student and later as a combat pilot, my focus was primarily on the technical aspects of my duties rather than the political implications. In my youth, I didn’t spend much time contemplating the moral issues involved in my actions or the historical position of my nation. I lived in the present. Now, I wish to dedicate the rest of my life to exploring and understanding not just my personal role but the unfolding political events that have marked my era and will significantly impact the future of my children and grandchildren.
Today, I utilize the benefit of hindsight to analyze the complex ways in which, as a fighter pilot and flight leader, I was a small part of a global, multi-national conflict. My studies feel urgent because the ongoing conflict between Israel and its Palestinian neighbors remains central and persistent in shaping current geopolitics, continuing to pose a global threat. The region is already engulfed in conflict, and I closely monitor developments in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq, particularly in Syria.
Our Air Force has always trained us to perceive our actions as a war of self-defense, simplifying the moral and political perspectives. However, at 63, I am now at a point where I can see, understand, and think creatively about the actions of Israeli fighter pilots in the context of international politics, and none of it is straightforward. I have spent decades independently studying and reflecting on the political and ideological issues of my time. Now, more than ever, I am eager to focus entirely on political and historical issues, reading, writing, and publishing for the next couple of decades until the end of my life.
I graduated Cum Laude from Tel Aviv University in 1985, completing my undergraduate studies in Mathematics and Computer Science. From 1987 to 2016, I worked as a business executive, assisting numerous people and organizations with challenges and opportunities in electronics, communications, and computer technology. However, I have now retired from the business world. Moving forward, I anticipate the daily joy of learning about what interests me most: politics and national security, and the global evolution of ideology from a critical humanist perspective that emphasizes the importance of inalienable human rights.

PHD Political Science Personal Statement

This statement is remarkably thoughtful, mature, and deeply compelling. What makes it stand out immediately is the clarity of voice—measured, reflective, and grounded in a lifetime of experience that few applicants can match. The writer brings a rare combination of personal history, intellectual humility, and moral seriousness to the table, and that combination gives the narrative a quiet power.
The opening reflection on serving in the Israeli Air Force is especially striking. Rather than relying on the drama of military experience, the writer uses it as a lens for introspection. The contrast between youthful focus on technical duties and the later desire to understand the political and moral dimensions of conflict feels honest and profound. It sets the tone for…
