I am a 22-year-old Somali man, born in Connecticut and raised across various countries, including the Ivory Coast, Cairo-Egypt, Rome-Italy, Nairobi-Kenya, and Somalia. English is my first language, and I am fluent in French and Somali. My Italian is a bit rusty, and my Arabic requires improvement. My immediate aim is to fully commit to your program, while my long-term ambition is to contribute to the Developing World, particularly Africa. With my diverse experiences, I am well-suited for a career in International Relations.

My deep interest in International Relations led me to major in Political Science with a focus on IR during my undergraduate studies. I am particularly drawn to researching human rights and conflict resolution, especially ethnic conflicts and secessionist issues. At The College of XXXX, I completed a research thesis on state recognition practices. I plan to continue this research, incorporating more case studies. I have always been intrigued by statecraft and its relation to international law. I frequently explore human rights violations linked to violent secessions. Who decides what constitutes a state? What are the conditions for successful state recognition and peaceful nation-building?

My long-term aspiration is to work with a leading international NGO, USAID, or the US State Department as a Foreign Service Officer. Throughout high school and college, I have been involved in extracurricular activities and volunteer work. For instance, I volunteered at an AIDS orphanage called XXXX House, assisting staff with cleaning, playing, and monitoring children. I also worked with a prominent NGO, XXXX, as a Humanitarian Intern in their Nairobi Office, conducting research, completing reports, and going on field assignments in Somaliland (Somalia). These experiences solidified my decision to pursue graduate studies in IR and a career in international development and human rights.

I offer more than just ambition and drive. I am a compassionate and cosmopolitan African man, sensitive to diverse cultures and customs. As a global nomad and third culture kid, I have been exposed to various worldviews, shaping my global, multilingual identity. Having lived in poverty in Africa and the Global South, I can easily adapt to new situations and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. I am a global citizen.

XXXX International University's Master's Program in International Relations is the perfect setting for my graduate education, offering numerous professional opportunities to aid development programs aimed at improving the lives of those in developing countries.

I have traveled extensively and currently reside in Kenya with my family. My time in East Africa, Europe, North America, and the Middle East strengthens my application with linguistic abilities, cross-cultural skills, tolerance, understanding, and a multidimensional worldview. My decision to apply to this program is driven by my desire to pursue a career in international development. I believe that the Master's Program in International Relations at XXXX International University in London will provide the education and skills necessary for a career in the non-profit and NGO sector while preparing me for civil service. Both options remain open. My academic and non-academic experiences have led me to this endeavor to achieve my goals. Studying at XXXX University would be a remarkable opportunity in many ways.

At the College of XXXX, I co-founded and served as Public Relations Officer for UJAMAA, the African Students Association, acted as Liaison Officer for NOOR, participated in Model United Nations, and was Co-Chair of the DREAM Program. These experiences taught me valuable lessons and enhanced my creativity and wisdom. Courses like “International Political Economy,” “Social Movements,” “Nationalism and Interdependence,” and “Ethics from a Social Perspective” provided key theoretical concepts applicable to real-world issues. A liberal arts education allowed me to select courses outside my concentration, such as “Africana Studies,” “Religious Studies,” and “Sociology,” offering new perspectives relevant to my career focus.

I have learned to think critically and intuitively, understanding that my education began in the classroom but extended beyond it. Reviving the African Students Association (UJAMAA) and transforming the Muslim Students Association into NOOR helped me develop skills like advertising, event coordination, and panel discussions. My Senior Independent Study Research Thesis, “Winners and Losers: An Analysis of Secession and The Recognition of Statehood,” was a 180-page study addressing unrecognized states and recognition practices. I secured interviews with officials and public figures in Somaliland, including the Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and the President of the University of Hargeisa.

As a Humanitarian Assistant at the Somalia/Somaliland Program Office in Nairobi, I reported to the Humanitarian Coordinator and handled assignments like monthly Situational Reports (SITREP) on the Office’s activities. I learned about Oxfam’s development and humanitarian efforts, conducted research, and collected data during field assignments across Somalia, witnessing the impact of drought and poverty. We developed solutions, such as creating a “borehole” for water collection.

In summary, I seek acceptance into your program to dedicate the next 60 to 80 years to Africa's development: learning, loving, sharing, and growing. I aim to contribute to making this world united, uplifting the poorest to uplift ourselves.

This statement presents an exceptionally compelling and deeply human portrait of someone whose life story, academic preparation, and professional experiences align almost perfectly with the demands of a graduate program in International Relations. What makes it especially powerful is the authenticity that runs through every paragraph—you are not simply listing qualifications, but demonstrating how your identity, your upbringing, and your lived experiences have shaped a genuine, lifelong commitment to global development and humanitarian work.

Your multinational background is one of your greatest strengths. Having lived across East Africa, North America, Europe, and the Middle East, you bring a level of cultural fluency and global awareness that cannot be taught in a classroom. You articulate this beautifully, showing how your linguistic…
