Personal Statement MA Communications, Latina, the Voiceless, Grad School Purpose

As a sociable and highly professional individual, I bring over twenty years of experience in the media, addressing both internal and external communication challenges. Recently, my responsibilities have centered on press relations. A key strength of my application is my Latina heritage, which has enabled me to achieve significant milestones with Spanish-language news stations in Los Angeles. Completing your esteemed master's program in Communications Management at UXX will empower me to fulfill my aspiration of becoming a communications director who advocates for the public interest and engages with underserved communities. Inspired by the martyred and now Saint Romero of El Salvador, recently beatified by Pope Francis, I aspire to be a “voice of the voiceless.”

My formal education began later in life, with an AS in Mass Communications earned in 2011. I am set to complete my bachelor's in public administration on May 30, 2015. I am now deeply committed to advanced studies and eager to fully dedicate myself to graduate school. This is my moment. I aim to apply my knowledge to the study and investigation of communication strategies, corporate communication, and social media, with a specific focus on the Spanish-speaking community. UXX’s online program is my top choice due to its professional relevance to the Greater Los Angeles Area and its cutting-edge Communications Management Program. The convenience of online study will allow me to enhance my multitasking skills, excel in my current role as a XXXX with my employer XXXX, assist my children with their homework and projects, and continue my volunteer activities and research interests.

Central to my professional vision is my extensive involvement in feeding the homeless, particularly migrant families in California and Mexico. I have been committed to volunteer work since high school, participating in sporting events, fundraisers, and more. I believe strongly that the Latino community, especially the underserved, requires greater representation and voice. Having witnessed this lack firsthand as a child, I recognize the importance of communication in conveying clear and positive messages. I aim to improve my ability to listen empathetically and responsively to better understand different perspectives. I am interested in learning about people's feelings, motivations, values, and ethics.

Empathy is crucial for fully understanding and communicating the perspectives of individuals or groups. I am intrigued by how some organizations I have worked with need new communication strategies to adapt to changes in workplace culture and business climate. I want to help our community thrive, and I believe that with dedication and determination, anything is possible. At 54, I aspire to inspire others to pursue their dreams, regardless of age, by believing in themselves.

I hope my efforts in Communication will positively impact everyone I encounter. By honing my skills as a communications manager, I can assist those without a voice. Sharing effective communication strategies with marginalized groups can empower them to overcome their disenfranchised status. I look forward to dedicating the remainder of my career to becoming a strong leader and teaching leadership skills in communication.

As a master's student in your program at UXX, I also aim to deepen my understanding of conflict resolution. I want to learn how conflicts stem from communication failures and how to address them, striving for win-win outcomes. UXX’s historical excellence in Communications makes it my sole choice. I admire your achievements, especially as exemplified by the XXXX School for Communication and the XXXX Public Policy Center. It would be a great honor to earn my master's degree in communications management at UXX, and I thank you for considering my application.
