Growing up as the child of civil servants stationed in Washington D.C., I developed an early interest in politics. This passion influenced my decision to study Political Science and Economics for my Bachelor's degree and Public Policy for my Master's.
My career began on Capitol Hill, where I gained insights into federal public policy and the legislative process. I then took on roles across all fifty states, engaging in state regulatory and legislative lobbying. This involved crafting and adjusting strategies to suit diverse local cultures and perspectives. Later, I transitioned to federal regulatory and policy representation.
In my leisure time, I travel extensively and have visited thirty-nine countries. I have also studied French and Russian. I understand the significance of considering cultural differences in international business and look forward to interacting with and learning from professionals from various countries and cultures.
My most impactful professional experience was at Ketchum Global PR. Here, I worked with several major US corporations and had the privilege of collaborating directly with Fred Smith, the founder and chairman of Federal Express. He was one of the many inspiring leaders whose techniques I was fortunate to observe closely.
Fred Smith understood early on that successful businesses could operate globally. Together, we explored the possibility of transforming the US Postal Service into a more privatized and efficient system. We focused on educating policymakers, developing a regulatory framework for privatized services, and creating a marketing campaign to implement once legislation was in place. FedEx successfully went global early, and I learned many valuable lessons during this time.
My subsequent role was with the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, where I gained insights into how not to enter the global market. After nine years, I accepted a corporate buyout and now seek a new direction that will enable me to help companies recognize global opportunities and navigate the complexities of globalization. I am eager for this transition and to work alongside enthusiastic and experienced professionals, sharing knowledge with them.
The global economy is a reality, and companies must choose to either ignore it and face consequences or embrace it, acknowledging the challenges but also the vast potential rewards. Companies often fear the cultural, marketing, and regulatory challenges beyond domestic borders and need expert guidance. I aspire to be one of those guides, understanding that globalization is necessary for many companies and wanting to learn the most effective ways to achieve it.
The urgency for companies to explore the global economy is increasing. My expertise in external affairs, branding, and positioning is highly relevant to globalization, but I need to expand my skills to achieve my goals.
I recognize that this prestigious program will attract many qualified and experienced applicants, but I believe my unique blend of real-world experience in public policy, regulatory navigation, and the integration of public policy with business strategy offers significant value. I can provide a 'Washington insight' into corporate communications, external affairs, and public policy, adding value to my cohort and the business academic community.
