I am a young man from China who is extremely devoted to Chemistry, especially theoretical and environmental. I earned my Professional Science Master’s Degree (PSM) in May of 2017 from XXXX University, majoring in Applied and Industrial Chemistry. This experience has left me hungry for further advancement through studies at the doctoral level. I could not be more passionate about scientific research and eager to study towards the PHD to attain the optimal foundation for a professional lifetime dedicated primarily towards research. I earned my bachelor’s degree from the Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 2012 specializing in Pharmaceutical Engineering. Throughout the course of my studies in China, I realized that Chemistry was the field to which I have been called; thus, when I came to America for college at IUP, I chose Chemistry as my major and then immediately set to work learning everything that I could about advanced inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry. My intense efforts were recognized by my winning an academic achievement award for an outstanding GPA. My research interests include but are not limited to computational chemistry, environmental chemistry, and physical chemistry. I most enjoy simulating electronic structures and molecular processes. For example, I adopted Density Functional Theory (DFT), with the B3LYP functionals at the 6-31G(d) level in Gaussian to explore the optimization structures of MCl2(Py)2, where the M stands for Ni(II) and Cu(II). I enjoy interdisciplinary exploration in chemistry, linear algebra, quantum chemistry, electrodynamics, and so forth. I have some knowledge of C+, SAS, Gaussian, and Spartan programs, and I am good at mathematics – as demonstrated by the fact that I scored 169 of 170 in the GRE quantitative test. Another reason why I am especially mesmerized by theoretical chemistry is that, in 2013, the Nobel Prize was given to a research group focused on “Computer Modelling of Chemical Reactions”, a branch of computational chemistry, which leads me to firmly believe that the molecular dynamics of biological macromolecules will continue to be a very hot topic for the foreseeable future. I hope to have a chance at some point to do research in this or a related, supporting area. I worked especially hard at tracing certain elements in acid mine drainage (AMD) by using the U.S. Geological Survey Coal Quality (COALQUAL) Database to understand halide discharges from AMD to drinking water sources, because I find this branch of environmental chemistry to be especially fascinating. I am also interested in exploring atmospheric chemistry, although I have no relevant research experience in this area. I am especially highly motivated to pursue research in this area in the future, however, because China has an enormous problem with haze resulting from air pollution, with many people these days wearing masks whenever the venture outside. Thus, I look forward to learning all that I can about the chemistry of smog - resulting from emissions from chemical factories, automotive exhaustion, natural gas combustion and utilization, etc. I seek a full immersion experience in the study of air pollution mechanisms, especially the influence of pollutants on ozone concentrations. I recently gave a presentation concerning about Chinese culture, custom, and food to other master's students who are majoring in counseling to give them a brief description of China and to encourage them to choose China to visit as they prepare for careers as international counselors. After that seminar, the Counseling Department mailed me a thank-you letter for attending and I was deeply moved by it, reinforcing my passion for academic life and community, and pointing me towards a fuller engagement in the future with that community. I am also in the process of gaining teaching experience since I work part-time as a Chemistry Instructor at Penn State Schuylkill and hold a professional tutor job at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). The master's degree program in Educational Counseling at the University of XXXX is my first choice for graduate school. I especially admire the diversity of UXX and the vast professional opportunities that exist for preparing and enhancing my career opportunities for many years to be receiving a graduate degree from UXX. I especially appreciate the special focus on urban education, and the full exploration that takes place at UXX of urban and minority issues pertaining to education and educational counseling. A young Chinese American woman raised in China as well as in the USA, I had an incredibly positive educational experience at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, before transferring to UC Berkeley and finishing my BA in Psychology in May of 2016. I see my time at Chaffey College as of integral or foundational importance to my educational progress and I am most excited about the prospect of developing a special focus as a graduate student at UXX on educational counseling at the community college level, helping students like myself to find the drive and determination to realize their fullest dreams by reaching out and attaining the finest education possible. Born in California to Chinese parents, we returned to China when I was in the 4th grade, and we stayed there for 5 years; coming back to the USA just in time for me to start high school. My parents moving around a lot for professional reasons, in the USA and China, resulted in special challenges for my educational and emotional wellbeing as I was growing up. I was in special need of the kind of support that a school counselor has to offer. This was particularly true at the community college level when I was in search of the support and assistance for the highly competitive goal of attending UC Berkeley. While I have thought about becoming an educational counselor since I was a student in high school, this goal has taken shape in my mind with special clarity since my time as a student at Chaffey College. I am thankful that I had the experience of studying for 5 years in China, making me fully bicultural as well as bilingual, and providing me with intensive, first-hand experience in the Chinese educational system. There is nothing equivalent to the American school counselor in the Chinese educational system, despite the great need for academic and personal counseling for Chinese students. My educational counselor at Chaffey College has become for me a singularly prominent role model. I so very much appreciate the way that she inspired me to reach for the stars and apply to UC Berkeley. XXXX University at XXXX's Master's Degree Program in Psychology and Pupil Personnel Services, in preparation for earning the School Psychology Credential in California is my first choice for graduate school. A diligent and hardworking student, community activist, and volunteer, I come from two special and somewhat marginalized populations, both of which are well represented in California, refugees and immigrants from Central America as well as the LGBT community. As a gay, Hispanic man, I suffered a great deal from bullying in school because of my feminine characteristics and disposition. Fundamental to my choice of career is my desire to protect children from the kind of abuse that I endured in school. I look forward to a complete immersion experience in assessment for intervention, mental health counseling, behavior management and consultation: principles, ethics, and strategies, especially as concerns teachers and parents. I seek a cutting-edge education in how to best ensure that the school promotes educationally and psychologically healthy environments for all children and youth by implementing research-based, highly effective programs that prevent problems, enhance independence, and promote optimal learning. I am drawn to the vast diversity that characterizes academic community at XXXX and, in addition to my multicultural and multilingual competence, I always stay positive and creative, often making the most of my cultivated sense of humor. I was raised by a single mother, an immigrant from Guatemala who worked as a housekeeper while I was growing up in urban southern California environment. My school life was difficult from the beginning, Spanish being my first language, my mother working long hours, lonely; by the fifth or sixth grade I was certain that I was different and somehow the bullying to which I was subjected – which had a devastating effect on my academic performance – was somehow my own fault, because I was different from the other boys, more feminine. Each day at school was a battle because I had to endure the constant bullying physically and mentally. It was not until well into adolescence that I realized that I was gay and that being gay was also normal. From 3rd grade through high school, I was called terrible names, spat upon, and sometimes physically and even sexually assaulted. A school psychologist would have been very beneficial for me, someone to talk to about my problems; and someone who could have advocated on my behalf with the teachers, to let them know how I was struggling. By my junior year, I had dropped out of high school disenchanted with education, I just wanted a paycheck and to be able to help my mom. If I had of had someone to turn to for support in school, my destiny might have been different and I might have excelled academically much earlier on. As it was, after leaving high school, I spent 10 years sorting and folding clothes in a store, cleaning, etc. While I did in time become a supervisor, it would have been much better for me to have entered college sooner. I was studying again by 2015, however, and earned my Associates Degree in Psychology in 2017. During this period, I spent a lot of time on the National Association of School Psychology website learning about the day-to-day activities, challenges, and triumphs of school psychologists, especially as related to diversity issues. Soon, I felt called to and determined to build a career as a school counselor so that I might experience the profound fulfillment of uplifting, inspiring, and protecting vulnerable children and young people in our school system. Now working towards the completion of my BA in Psychology and Social Behavior at XXXX, I will be graduating this coming May of 2019. I hope to begin graduate school at XXXX for the coming fall semester. I received the Chancellors of Excellence Scholarship when I transferred to the University of California Irvine and I have become a diligent, hardworking, and creative student. Beginning with summer school, I have learned a great deal about social, emotional, and cognitive development in children, adolescents, adults, and the elderly; behavioral disorders and developmental psychopathology; counseling and therapy; cultural, social, and personality influences on behavior; attitude formation and change; cognition and emotion; health psychology; stress and coping. I now much better understand the complexity of social problems in education, the context of child development, and the importance of public policy and its development. I have also assisted with several research projects at UC Irvine, most notably with respect to the use of Live Ink vs. traditional text and its relationship to instructional strategies and achievements, working alongside graduate students as well as professors, learning everything that I can, especially about instructional strategies involving advanced technology. This fall, 2018 I will by studying abroad at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where my worldviews, multilingual capacity and celebration of diversity and multicultural competence will be heightened still further. In addition to studying intensively, I also look forward to teaching Spanish as well as English on a voluntary basis. I have been volunteering for some time now with Kid-works, an after-school program in Santa Ana for students from low-income families. This faith-based program is located in the exact area where I grew up and went to school, and the memories have come flooding in. Thus, it has been sheer joy for me to help students with their homework from kinder garden all the way through 12th grade. All of the students are Hispanic/Latinx. I also help with daily living skills, counsel students and serve as a responsible role model. With the 9th-12th graders, I help them to focus on college and complete applications. I have also assisted with literacy practice assessment for children in pre-k-6th grade. Frequently, I talk to parents whose only language is Spanish and respond to all of their concerns. I have worked with kids who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Neurodevelopment problems, Autism spectrum, and students who show symptoms of anxiety, as well as receiving special training for gifted students. My ultimate goal is to give back to our urban communities where I grew up and help students academically, emotionally, and behaviorally, and to do all that I can to uplift and protect children and young people, especially those who are risk as a result of a broad variety of factors. I look forward to giving my all for the balance of my professional lifetime to observation, assessment and counseling, especially crisis counseling and conflict resolution, helping parents and children with unresolved issues to find the right answers. I hold a bachelor degree in English Language from Taibah University in Saudi Arabia. I obtained a GPA score of 4.64 out of 5 and an ‘excellent second honor’ degree. I have been awarded a joint scholarship by my government to pursue a higher degree and am extremely keen to do so. My goal is to become one of the best teachers of English in my home country, to undertake useful research and, ultimately, to pursue a Ph.D. and provide the very best training to those intending to pursue a career in this field of work. I have no idea where my interest in teaching and the English Language originated but my earliest memories are of ‘teaching’ a class of toys and delighting in writing the names of my family members and simple words in English. I have never wavered in my determination to pursue studies and a career involving the teaching of English and am delighted that my childhood dreams appear likely to be fulfilled. I have several months teaching experience which involved assisting a teacher of English working with students aged 16-19. I thoroughly enjoyed this exposure, which was all that I had hoped it would be. I was assured by students and teachers that I made a significant contribution to the students’ progress and felt a great sense of satisfaction and accomplishment at the end of each day. In my opinion, variety is an important key to successful language teaching. I found this very helpful personally and observed that students enjoyed this way of learning. Saudi teaching tends to be conservative and formal text book based teaching together with language laboratory work is still the favored approach. Our students were encouraged to supplement formal studies with such activities as the reading of newspapers and magazines, listening to radio, game playing and studying song lyrics. I also observed that showing an interesting English language film and then discussing the plot was very effective and maximized student participation and interest. We also required students to make presentations in English occasionally about something that they had read, watched or listened to. This was both enjoyable and also created some very effective mutual learning experiences for students. I have carefully researched available programs and have concluded that I would be the best fit with your program at XXXX University, in order to gain the knowledge and skills that will enable me to be a highly effective teacher of English. I am especially attracted by the fact that the program provides an excellent grounding in both traditional methods and those involving the very latest technology and multimedia. I recognize that every student is different and that the favored method of a teacher may not be the most effective learning route for every student, thus the more methods a teacher is familiar with, the more effective he/she can become. My father traveled for business and took me with him while I was growing up, from one side of Bangladesh to the other. I watched, observed, and studied my country and its people and noticed very early on the profound disparities that exist between the very rich and the very poor. The larger cities now have vast accumulations of wealth while most people in urban areas still work for menial wages, serving the interests and lifestyle of the wealthy. The rest of the country seems stuck in grinding poverty with little hope of advancement give the almost complete lack of infrastructure development and investment throughout most of the country. I want to contribute to resolving this abysmal situation as a business leader for the future in the area of Property Investments and Development. This is why I hope very much to be selected for your distinguished Master’s Degree in Real Estate Finance Program at XXXX University. While I was born and raised in Bangladesh, I came to London for my undergraduate studies and am now working towards the completion of my LLB Degree from King’s College London. I have worked full time for the past three 3 summers with 5-6 months in total spent at each position. My first position was with an investment firm in Bangladesh (Date) performing Due Diligence Surveys for an Investment Analyst in the area of acquisitions of mostly commercial spaces and industrial land. I learned a great deal about real estate investment in this position that will serve me well as a graduate student in your program at XXXX, everything from finance to planning permissions and much in between. My next ‘summer’ was spent in Lisbon, Portugal where I also served as an Investment Analyst. This time, my focus was primarily on residential properties, the full gambit, everything from run down sites for redevelopment through existing structures that were new or in excellent condition. I learned a lot about how the values of properties shift as a result of a broad variety of conditions and factors, with these differences being seen most graphically when examined comparatively across neighborhoods. In Portugal, I participated in a lot of forecasting analysis, looking at issues of risk/reward, depreciation, and return on investment. This past summer I spent in Montreal Canada - again focused on analyzing investments in different parts of the country, including remote areas such as Newfoundland. This gave me great insight into the vast differences that can exist between real estate and investment climates in densely vs. sparsely populated areas, in Bangladesh as well as Canada. I have also learned a great deal about the impact of income disparities across countries and how this is related to real estate development. I especially enjoyed studying the complex ways in which different parts of Canada can be characterized as having a particular investment climate. I have studied very closely the economic impact of population movements and shifting densities – comparing, for example, rapidly growing cities such as Vancouver and Toronto, with other cities that have more stable populations. I have a great personal as well as professional passion for policies that protect the natural environment in sustainable ways with an emphasis on the integration and regeneration of urban areas. The area of London in which I currently live, Stratford, is an excellent example of successful regeneration that I have studied with special intensity. Before the 2012 Olympics the place was downtrodden and in most of it in very poor condition. Since the games, the area has been rejuvenated and the quality of life for those living here has greatly improved. Many new residency buildings have sprung up along with some of the world’s most exciting new shopping centers, new, cutting-edge universities are also being planned. Still only 22 years old, it pleases me to think about the long professional lifetime that I have ahead of me and I feel most keen to engage with the cutting edge of theory and reality in real estate development, especially projects and strategies for developing nations like Bangladesh. I think of myself as a real estate development professional and also a volunteer, as I seek to make my humanitarian mark in this area as well. No greater gift can be given to people than dignified shelter and I have no desire to devote my efforts of a lifetime to the high end of real estate investment. I am more attracted to plans that benefit the common masses of ordinary people. In addition to Hindi and Bengali, I am also fluent in French and I hope to make use of this language as well at some point in my career at the service of the developing world, the former colonies of European nations. Some of my highest moments in life so far have been while serving as a volunteer in Bangladesh working with a resilient housing project for 100's of families in Rangpur in rural Bangladesh. We sought, with a certain degree of success, to change to focus of residential construction to disaster risk reduction in areas subject to numerous water-related challenges. We enjoyed success at the implementation of earthen solutions along with the use of other natural materials such as bamboo in the construction of low cost yet sanitary and efficient dwellings for people of very limited resources. I look forward to the fullest and most rigorous immersion experience possible in global property markets, especially commercial, with a focus on finance and development. My aspiration to distinguish myself as a real estate development professional is a product of my unique childhood, educational experiences, cultural exchange, and entrepreneurship. Born in a small city along the border of China and North Korea, I grew up witnessing North Koreans risking their lives for a more democratic state and often fleeing oppression, a desperate attempt to build better lives for themselves and their children. Later, I observed, both in Canada and the US, the sacrifices that migrants make to help their children gain a foothold upon which they can build new lives with security and freedom. After my family immigrated to Canada, we spent half a year in each country until I reached the tenth grade, when I stayed with a homestay family in Vancouver and later moved to Princeton for my undergraduate studies in Comparative Literature. These experiences of constantly adapting and thriving in diverse cultures helped me to develop a multicultural mindset especially sensitive to the needs of new immigrants from China. Working in France, Canada, China during undergraduate breaks, as a reporter and a teacher, broadened my horizons and experience. My position as a part-time teacher during my semester abroad in China, with New Oriental Technology, the leading Chinese study abroad and language training company, further honed my understanding of international education and migration of children and their families much like that of my own. When I found myself at a podium in Beijing giving a lecture to more than one hundred Chinese students, I realized that I was on my way. When I returned to Princeton for my junior year, I enrolled in the Teacher Preparation Program and founded my own test prep company in Vancouver. Based on my own experience of achieving near perfect SAT scores, I launched a technique-based SAT curriculum in Vancouver. The massive influx of immigrants from China to Canada under the Investor Immigrant Program, my market segmentation of Chinese immigrant students aiming for top US schools and the effective 20-day curriculum, allowed me to develop quickly and expand classes to over forty new students during each of my Christmas and summer vacations. I invested the profit from my company in real estate in Vancouver. In hindsight, the rapid increase in supply and demand for international education services have shaped my initial understanding of real estate, an essential need and reflection of residents and newcomers alike. I have long been engaged in community discussions and routinely spend several hours a day staying up on the news and the literature, especially those concerning China and its relationship to rest of the world. Over the last seven years, I have built a niche college consulting brand and transitioned to a managerial role for three counsellors. I have also continued to expand my real estate portfolio and obtained my real estate license, taking a variety of professional development courses for both Realtors and developers, from marketing to project management to construction courses. After three acquisitions and earning a profit margin of 10%+ annual for each one, for consecutive years, I started investing along with my father in 2011, as my parents had moved to Vancouver. My father improved his English and obtained his professional home builder’s permit. Together, my father and I have developed, built, and sold residential houses, multi-family suits in Vancouver and are currently developing a 30-unit condominium project and fifteen luxury single houses in Sechelt, British Columbia, with an expected revenue of over $40 Million. I had the privilege of learning and making decisions about purchasing the land, finding the subcontractors, and doing the marketing. I have worked with and learned from mentors and consultants as well as experimentally, the roadmap and skill set of subdivision, negotiation with the government, acquiring development and building permits and so forth. I have come to love the comprehensive science of real estate and the role of developers to enrich the community. Our efforts in real estate investment have allowed our family to reunite, being together in one city for the first time in almost two decades. Growing up in Vancouver, I watched it become one of the least affordable cities in the world, with speculators buying up homes just to leave them empty; locals protesting and young people leaving, soaring property taxes and loss of community spirit. Local Chinese who grew up in the city often came into conflict with more recent Chinese immigrants, and discussions of race and immigration have become a sensitive topic for the famously multicultural city. I want to help solve conflicts and find solutions to challenges in these areas, especially with respect to multicultural communities such as Vancouver, from acquisition to design to construction. I am grateful for the firsthand experience of growing up and working in this field laboratory of migration and globalization, so that I better understand the root causes of needs and tensions that affect our increasingly globalized world. Describe an occasion when you were a leader or set a positive example in your school. I live in Kokshetau, Kazakhstan and I have been teaching English for 9 years.Central to my teaching philosophy is the design of lesson plans that empower students in practical ways, developing tools that will serve them for a lifetime. Thus, I struggle to serve as a leader in the classroom every day, setting a positive example as someone in my school is very curious and loves to explore challenges and implement novel ideas. I dream of becoming a leader among my colleagues and in my profession, as well as in my classroom. Completing your program will go a long way towards helping me to achieve this goal. I have been a leader among my peers for my entire life, in the area of foreign languages, helping to inspire them to excel as I have. I have been studying foreign languages since childhood. I have many heroes who have inspired me along the way; Henry Schliemann comes to mind, for example, because of the way in which he independently set about as an archeologist to learn not just one but several ancient languages as part of his quest to find the ancient city of Troy. The first language I mastered on my own was Esperanto, learning through correspondence. I still have the certificate of completion of this course. In our village school in Kazakhstan, the only foreign language instruction available was in German. I have always especially loved this language and this is why I chose to study German Language and Literature in the University, graduating with honors. I was already an adult by the time that I began learning English intensively. English has been my independent conquest, something that I have learned almost entirely on my own initiative, and it has become my greatest passion of the course of the last decade. Primarily as the result of a lot of hard work in an accelerated language learning program by correspondence, I was able to develop my English to the point of fluent communication, especially written. In time, I became an English teacher. In my first year I was asked to organize a team of Young Police Assistants among school children. The goal of this project was to raise the legal awareness of the students, their civic consciousness. While neither a historian nor a jurist, I soon realized that the teacher must wear many hats and that education was highly political, at least in Kazakhstan. In fact, citizenship education has become a priority in the educational system of our country. I take pride in the fact that I have done everything within my power to inspire the children to become truly interested in and engaged with these projects. I have developed a special interest in “at risk” youth. It is in this area where I am able to realize my fullest leadership potential and I want to devote the balance of my professional life to this cause and try my hardest to set an example for others to follow. Me and my colleagues are involved in various social projects in the field of Law; and we are a four-time winner of the city competition among school teams. As a result of participating in your program, I hope to become a mentor for the teachers of our school, especially in terms of the methodological organization of foreign languages. I want very much to improve the quality of our educational services in this area. The name of our city is Kokshetau. It is rather a town, a center of the Akmola region (Kazakhstan is divided into 16 regions), population 135,106 (2009 Census). Kokshetau is well known for its nature and tourist sites, such as Burabay (Borovoe) Resort, among others. Kokshetau was settled on a lake, called Kopa (Russian: Копа). In terms of our educational system, we have Kokshetau State University named after Shokan Ualichanov (the first Kazakh scientist) as well as several private universities and a lot of collages. There are 23 secondary schools here. My school is situated on the outskirts of the town, in the most impoverished area of the region. This area of my country is home not only to many traditional religious organizations but many newer sects as well. Most of the residents are renters, and most of the homes are hovels with no modern conveniences. The level of unemployed is extremely high. A lot of people suffer from tuberculosis. The cultural level of our schoolchildren’s parents is very low. Nearly 70% of our schoolchildren leave school after the 9th grade to enter technical training programs for lower paid positions in our work force. Less than one quarter of our students pass the National Test that is required to enter our universities. Only a handful, if any, get grants. We try to improve the success of our students by encouraging participation in our many different clubs and sports activities. We seek the full involvement of students in both the educational process as well as extracurricular activities as this tends to result in lower levels of juvenile crime, especially with respect to recidivism rates. In our town, local athletes are among our most important cultural heroes; thus we try to harness to enthusiasm associated with athletics to enhance the overall pedagogical purpose of our school. Most recently, we have been laboring especially hard to encourage and increase parent participation in our academic community. Describe at least two ways you will share these skills with your school and/or community. My greatest asset is my high level of motivation to learn everything that I can about Information and Communication Technology ICT. There is still little use of technology in the classroom in Kazakhstan. When I return from your program, I hope to be able to make important contributions to the movement that is being built to change this, and to invest more in our educational system, especially in terms of English Language Education. New methodologies in the Teaching of English as a Second or Foreign language is my primary interest; and upon my return to Kazakhstan, I will do all that I can to share what I learn in your program with others, through seminar presentations and networking through teacher’s organizations. Completing your program will help me to to become a more highly qualified ESL teacher and leader in the field of multilingual education, especially English and German. Today’s education is a life-long process to each person that need to be reinforced throughout life. Considering the present English teaching conditions in Kazakhstan, I think the central key for English teachers to teach more effectively lies in raising the students’ level of interest and engagement with what they are learning in English. Participating in your program will also go a long way towards helping me to implement another important personal goal for the future, attracting foreign teacher volunteers to our school. So far, the teachers of English that are native speakers of the language and have come to our city have only taught in the so-called elite schools. A very hard working young man whose parents immigrated to America from Nigeria, I am currently enrolled in an MBA Program at XXXX University College. While I enjoy learning about business generally speaking, I have been most passionate about and engaged with real estate for the past several years and so I want very much to transfer into your program where I might be able to focus my studies exclusively in the area of real estate development. Raised in Clinton Maryland, I went to Pittsburgh for my undergraduate studies and then moved home to Maryland. The way in which I see XXXX as unique is summed up by the fact that the first course every student is required to take in your program is Real Estate Ethics. I have labored mightily as a volunteer so as to be worthy of entering your program. In Pittsburgh I was part of an organization called the XXXX, tutoring, mentoring, the inner city youth of Pittsburgh. Nevertheless, my grades suffered as a result of my extra-curricular activities: a Division 1 athlete, co-founder of a start-up investment company (which is now thriving), and my internship at a Fortune 500 company. On top of this, my mother became gravely ill. My mother’s illness made me stronger in many ways, my football improved, and I proved myself enormously successful at managing finances and operations for a moving and storage company. My experience as a founder of a start-up company is another driving force behind my optimism and high level of motivation. I joined with another member of my football team who was already a real estate investor and together we were able to learn from a variety of real estate investors in the Pittsburgh market, assisting them in rehabs, construction, and market research, finding properties that represented excellent investment opportunities. Real Estate is now my life. I read constantly, go to seminars, and I am now buying and selling my own real estate as well as assisting other buyers. I was raised in China until the age of 15, when I received a full scholarship from the Singapore Ministry of Education and to study grades 9-12 in Singapore. Scholarship Essay Global Health Care I admit that when I first got the idea to apply for a scholarship at Oxford, I was intimidated because Oxford is for me a picture of a faraway academic temple, a holy pillar of academic learning steeped in mythology. I have very much enjoyed books and movies dealing with the lore and lure of Oxford. My wife is a dreamer; thus we decided to share this dream together, just as we do all things pertaining to medicine. In fact, we feel strongly that our qualifications for your program are heightened by the fact that we work exceptionally well as a team. I am really excited by each new opportunity that I have for learning in life, especially about the health sciences. My seven years as a medical student have been by far the most beautiful years of my life. I thoroughly enjoyed every lesson and clinical experience. I met my wife on the medical school bench; we have become a family now with two charming girls, all of us very much a part of our academic community including the university and nearby hospital. Despite living on a student budget, I have happily subscribed to the New England Journal of Medicine for years. I spend countless hours poring over clinical cases and research into global public health issues in my spare time. I have worked brutally long hours as a physician assistant in an internal medicine ward, and then in pediatric ER. I have also tried my best to stay involved in social issues, especially those related to the unique environment of the Negev (south of Israel). A friend of mine from an MSIH program collaborating with Columbia University came here from the USA to study the Negev. Through my relationship with him I learned a great deal about researching interfaces between global health and community in cross-cultural populations. Since my first year of medical school, I have worked as a volunteer at the Israel Cancer Association; retaining to this day many strong relationships with families that have lost or are losing their children to cancer. I have also volunteered for the ‘XXXX Association (House of Wheels) for three years. We go to the homes of children with disabilities (mainly cerebral palsy), and develop fun activities for weekends, especially to provide the parents with some relief. My paid employment has also had a social and environmental orientation. During my first three years of studies, I worked as a mentor for the XXXX Association for Youth Empowerment in Israel and I had the honor to be one of the first three instructors of the Association working in the Negev. I have now become highly familiar with the variant populations of the Negev: Bedouin settlements, Moshav (agricultural settlement), Kibbutz (collective community) and I have even worked as an instructor at an absorption center for Ethiopians. Of greatest relevance to my application to your program, however, is my work as the Coordinator of a program called "Access to Academic Education". We motivate high-school students who live in the remote areas of the Negev, to take up further academic studies and we are now working with about 300 students, most Bedouins, with Arabic as a mother language. It is quite challenging to teach Jews and Bedouins in the same class with the same discussions and activities, yet I am proud of this achievement because of its long term rewards for breeding social cohesion and sense of community responsibility. Masters Sports Industry Management I grew up in a very sport oriented family. My elder brother loved and participated in football, basketball and baseball and played at a high standard, he and my parents encouraged me participate in as many sports as I could and I did so enthusiastically. I played volleyball, softball, basketball and ran track at school. Much of our home life revolved around participating in sport, watching sport and talking about it. I regard sport to be an immensely important part of life in that: it teaches effective teamwork; it builds self-esteem and confidence as well as allowing young people to reach their maximum level of fitness and provides a consequent feeling of general well-being and discourages substance and alcohol abuse. I also know from witnessing its effects that when young people ‘find themselves’ in sport they are much more likely to become academically engaged and personally responsible. My immediate goal is to join the program and to excel within it. My ultimate goal is to be the Director/Coordinator for a prestigious sports team in PR or Community Relations organizing events involving the participation of the young and fan/player engagement. In 2002, a few days prior to my senior year in high school, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I had been suffering vision loss in one eye and found it difficult to grip objects but had no idea of the implications and the diagnosis came as a terrible shock. While coming to terms with the diagnosis and dealing with the effects of the illness, I suffered the loss of a dearly loved stepfather and these combined events had a seriously negative effect on my academic performance. I decided to study nursing, mainly I believe as a result of my own condition but sport was still my ‘first love’ and I switched to Sports Management with a concentration on Sport Communication. I struggled during my first year at college but was determined not to be overcome by my situation and my results began to improve. During my bachelor studies, and among other sports related activities: I served as Athletic Director Assistant at XXXX High School; participated in the HBCU College Diversity Panel; became a mentor, tutor and coach for XXXX AAU program and interned for the MEAC as a Media Relations Assistant. I obtained an internship with the Washington XXXX and worked in PR and Game Operation and was very effective in the role. I loved all these activities which gave my confidence an enormous boost and received pleasing assurances as to my effectiveness within these roles. Once I graduated, to my distress, I was unable to find a professional role in sports management and have taken a series of financial administrative posts in order to ‘pay the bills’. I have changed jobs several times hoping to find a role outside sport that will fulfill me personally but I have come to the conclusion that such a job probably does not exist and so I am making this application. Though I should add that the roles I have filled to date have provided a very useful and practical foundation to a role within sports administration. I have learned a significant amount about regulatory compliance, marketing, planning, finance, PR, facilities management, report preparation and many other matters directly applicable to a future senior role in sports management. My major in my bachelor degree was in Sport Communication and I possess excellent writing skills and I am also a confident and effective speaker both on a personal and group level. My condition has enhanced personal traits that I believe that I already possessed. It has taught me that no obstacle is insurmountable with sufficient determination and positivity, the value of setting highly challenging goals and not to abandon them. It has been necessary to be creative in finding ways of minimizing the effects of my condition and retaining a cheerful and optimistic attitude in facing any problem that arises and I have succeeded in doing so. I take pleasure in helping others realize that they can do more than they probably believe and to tackle obstacles and problems with optimism and tenacity. I am aware that cultural sensitivity and awareness are important in the type of roles that I hope to fill.
