I am a student of sociology from Kuwait with an undergraduate degree from my home country and an MA Degree in Sociology from XXXX University London (UK) 2008. My long term goal is to teach sociology at Kuwait University, a position for which I need to earn the PHD Degree. As a young Indian woman who could not be more passionate for digital media and marketing, I am especially sensitive about issues of social justice and equality and the protection of human rights. Thus, I see digital social media and advertising as opportunities for progressive social change, especially with respect to the image of woman. I am disturbed by the way that a woman’s body has always been exploited by media and I am particularly concerned with the way that this has helped to create a society in my country, India, where women are frequently brutally raped in public by gangs of young men that have been totally failed by our educational and communications systems. Sometimes, these attacks are fatal.

I am applying for entry to the undergraduate program in Financial Actuarial Mathematics. My reason for doing so is a love of, and an aptitude for, mathematics combined with a strong interest in the way that businesses operate and reach decisions. My family owns a business in which I have worked and, during this time, I have become increasingly aware of the fact that almost every business decision involves risk and that in many cases the decision maker can be greatly assisted in reaching the right decision by the quantification of the risk that they are facing. My ambition is to become an actuarial consultant aiding businesses, particularly small businesses, at times in which management is taking significant business decisions involving major changes, in order to avoid business failure or significant financial loss.

Few men from Africa end up making Latin America their home. The fact that I have now accompanied my wife of 2 years to her native Colombia for no less than 9 lengthy visits, adopting her home as my own, provides me with unique opportunities to become a voice for the developing world, the global south. While born in the USA and raised here for most of my life, I have also spent long periods of time, 2 years on one visit, back home in Africa, my parents having immigrated from Monrovia, Liberia shortly before I was born. With my roots in Africa and my destiny in Latin America, I hope to make my mark in the study of international relations with a special emphasis on the importance of enhancing solidarity, scholarly exchange, and economic collaboration between Africa and Latin America, comparative study and action, networking with governments, NGOs, and collaborating with the UN on projects as well.

My keen desire as an Indian woman to earn a Masters Degree in International Relations is born from the conflict and tragedy that my own family has endured in India. I lost loved ones that were most dear to my heart in the string of terror attacks that swept India in 2008. It is my hope, therefore, after completing your distinguished MA Program at XXXX University, to build a career as a diplomat and a peacemaker, especially with respect to relations between India and its neighbors Pakistan and Bangladesh.

I am a young woman from India who is now advancing her career and making a new home here in America. Like most Americans, I grew up accepting that clean water is abundantly and permanently available. As my interest in Geology developed, I wondered at the sophisticated and complex means by which this literally vital asset is made available to us. When I became aware that many of the world’s population lack access to sufficient water or have access only to water that may carry disease, I made a decision that I would seek to acquire the skills and knowledge to enable me to do something to help those deprived of adequate supplies of clean water. It is my ultimate objective to obtain a leading role in a company or NGO concerned with finding and implementing solutions and to become an Associate Professor of Geology, sharing my knowledge and passion for this life-giving field of study and work with others.

I struggled to reconcile my interests, skills, and passion with the selection of a major for my first two years of college until I took my first Geology course. Since that time, geology and geophysics have stood at the center of my world. In my Energy, Fossil Fuel and Society class at Purdue University I discovered a great deal about how the exploration sector operates within the energy industry and I became increasingly fascinated. This led me to further individual research involving seismic method applications, particularly near-surface seismology and 3D shallow reflection.

I obtained my LLB in my home country, Ethiopia and completed my LLM at Howard University. It is perhaps ironic that I have come to truly love Africa the most, and to have profound hope for her, only as a result of coming to America and completing my LLM at Howard. My short term professional dream is to be a university professor in my home country. I see your particularly distinguished PHD program in African Studies at XXXX University as the best fit for my interests given your thoroughgoing and interdisciplinary focus on development and public policy. My heart is back in Ethiopia and I want to return well prepared for my maximum contribution. Development Studies are still in their infancy in Africa and there is much work to be done. After teaching in Ethiopia for a few years, I hope to move on and become engaged with a regional organization such as the African Union, always working on development issues and making good use of my legal background.
