A cosmopolitan woman from Saudi Arabia with liberal values, a global perspective, and a very progressive agenda, I am full of hope for social change in my country, Saudi Arabia, in terms of women’s rights. My father is not a typical Saudi man; rather, he is someone who highly values women’s contribution to society and favors equal treatment of women and men. He has raised 5 children now, all daughters, of which I am the youngest. Most of my older sisters are also professionals holding or pursuing graduate degrees in their field. My own career goals have been formed against this background; and dedicating my own professional life to the empowerment of women in Saudi society stands as a tribute and token of appreciation to both of my parents. The single most important thing that my father did was to buy us a summer home in the Bay Area, a wonderful place for a little girl to grow up enjoying total freedom. Almost every year of my life, I have spent 2-3 months in our summer home in Foster City; and since adolescence, I have been exploring much of the Bay Area alone, as well as with my sisters and parents, something that I could never do in my home country of Saudi Arabia. Growing up in San Francisco in the summer time did wonders for my English; and for this I am very thankful. It is wonderful to speak English much better than almost anyone else in Saudi Arabia and it has always pleases me greatly. Being liberal minded in Saudi Arabia, however, can cause one problems and I have had my share. As well traveled as I am well read, I have also spent 10 days in Tokyo and weeks at a time in Italy, France, and England. By the time I was growing into adolescence, I was becoming very sensitive about issues of discrimination against girls and women in Saudi Arabia. I had already seen the sadness and disappointments in my 4 older sisters, each one living through the difficulties and deceptions that result from girls and women having very restricted opportunities in the KSA. These restricted opportunities are internalized by young girls, often coming to confuse what they become in reality with the way things were ‘meant to be’ rather than the product of an unjust social system. Our struggle for equality and social justice as women in Saudi Arabia, therefore, is central to my professional as well as personal identity and I hope to be accepted to your competitive program at Berkeley partly on the merits of my great passion for the civil and human rights of women in Saudi Arabia. I hope to excel in your Master in Development Practice Program at XXXX in the area of the empowerment of women, researching and writing about Saudi women as much as possible so that I will be adequately prepared to publish in this area in the future in the areas of women in workforce development, entrepreneurial training, in addition to educational access and the way in which it is related to human rights and economic justice. My sisters and I have never accepted the Saudi way of thinking about issues of gender and sexuality. In the KSA, when a woman gets harassed on the street or at the mall, many people tend to see it as her own fault because she was walking alone rather than with a male relative and/or not covering her face. For us, this is ridiculous, a great indignity for women, and we have suffered and rebelled our entire lives. What inspires me to move forward and to continue to militate for social change in the area of female empowerment is that the world is on the side of Saudi women, not the unjust system, and I hope to make the most of this solidarity at XXXX and put it to good use when I return to my country. I am most pleased that my personal history includes intensive professional experience in the area in which I hope to study since I had the privilege of completing a graduate development program sponsored by Banque Saudi Faransi, where I was rotated across a variety of key functions in the bank, learning to think creatively about banking and development and becoming highly competent across basic banking disciplines. This experience helps to prepare me for a lifetime of service on behalf of the advancement of Saudi women. The solidarity that is generated with our cause is applicable to Muslim women in general, many of whom also face repression in their home countries, places like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran. Your PHD Program in Audiology at the University of XXX (UXX) is my first choice for graduate school for several reasons in addition to its sheer excellence and impressive ranking. Since I was raised in Taiwan, XXXX has become my second home, returning here for school at 17. Now 24, I will soon be completing the Bachelor’s Program in Communications Disorders at UXX and I have come to very much love my university, think of it as home, and thus ask for the honor of completing my education where I feel most comfortable. My undergraduate education at UXX in Communications Disorders is complemented by my 6-month internship in an Audiology Clinic in Taiwan assisting with patient care. I have also been teaching in an after-school program here in Dallas and I have served as a volunteer in a nursing home along with my church group for several years. My experiences in life have helped me to become a patient and compassionate person and I see these as most certainly among the greatest gifts of the successful Audiologist in her labor each day to do all that they can to help people to hear better. I look forward to working with people of all ages with a focus in my research on older patients since this is where the need is most concentrated. My Audiology class stole my heart and the project that I completed for this course brought me the greatest joy so I decided to make it my life work. My undergraduate years at UXX gave me a foundation to make very important contributions in my internship with the Otorhinolaryngology clinic in Taiwan. I had the enormous privilege of attending to a great diversity of patients with many different types of hearing issues in our clinic. One gentleman, for example, had great difficulty understanding people when they spoke quickly and he had struggled with this problem for many years and would often choose writing as a form of communication to compensate for his hearing problem. I thus came to investigate writing as a potential tool for the Audiologist through the use of an application on a smart phone or tablet that could interpret verbal stimulation into words and then provide a connection with a certain hearing aid through Bluetooth, so that when a person hears something, the application interprets it and displays the words in the form of subtitles. For my Master’s Thesis, I am working on queer separatism, focusing on the radical faeries group and their stance on ecological issues. My studies of the connection between women’s issues and environmental issues and their impact on the global south, has left me convinced that the repression of sexual minorities is grounded in a larger ‘crisis of reason’ as suggested by Val Plumwood. Thus, I seek the fullest possible immersion experience at the U of X in the gambit of complicated ways in which gender and sexual orientation are related to other forms of oppression - as well as the destruction of our planetary home. I look forward to a lifetime of exploration into the cultural, political and historical foundations of privilege and power. Within time, I hope to become a distinguished expert in the application of transnational perspectives to discussions of human rights and social justice. I also hope to teach in this area in the future, in India, the USA, or both. This past September 29, 2017, the USA joined India in the group of 13 members that voted against a UNHRC resolution to denounce the death penalty for same-sex relations, while no less than 27 member-states in the council voted in favor of the resolution. The fact that both of the countries which I now consider home were part of the distinct minority that voted against standing up for LGBT rights, leaves me with the firm impression that much work remains to be done in both places. My intensive and sustained research on queer history and decolonization as a student here in XXXX will help me to hit the ground running in your program and make valuable contributions to class discussions. It would be a special honor for me as a doctoral student at the U of X to study under Dr. XXXX since I deeply admire her work in the area of indigenous pedagogies and could not be more excited about the prospect of further harnessing her methodology for the illumination of queer and decolonization perspectives. Her paper “XXXX” is of special relevance for debates concerning postcolonial perspectives, in India as in other parts of the former colonial world. Now, I understand why the majority of women in rural India do not use sanitary pads and why and how the Indian public health structure totally fails women on the bottom rungs of India’s class system. During the last year of my undergraduate studies in Economics in India, my friends and I formed a self-help group in a rural area to help women work towards the achievement of sound, sustainable, economic goals for themselves and their family. I also earned a Master’s Degree in Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, where my interest in and focus on women’s issues very much intensified. I began to learn more about the theoretical aspects of gender, especially with respect to international politics. The highlight of my last year of graduate study in India was co-authoring an academic paper: “XXXX” for my final year project, which I presented in a two-day conclave on the “Impact of Globalization on Women” organized by the National Commission for Women. I next worked as a program coordinator for a non-profit organization in Kerala to gain additional exposure to a variety of social issues impacting women. Some of the projects that I led were communication workshops for economically disadvantaged children and computer classes to enable housewives to sell handicrafts through e-commerce. In 2015, I moved to Chandigarh, where I went to work on behalf of Global Shapers, a non-profit organization specializing in women’s issues and the prevention of child sexual abuse along with treatment programs for the victims. I have contributed significantly to the organization’s efforts toward creating sexual abuse awareness programs in schools across the region. As a PHD student I plan to further elucidate how our ecological crisis is rooted in the evolution of Western philosophy and ideology. I am already heavily engaged with research on queer ecologies and queer cultures and I presented a paper “XXXX” at the 2nd International Women’s Rights Assembly in New Delhi, exploring the ways in which debates over decolonization have an impact on the articulation of and struggle for LGBT rights in India. One of my favorite projects was to analyze ad performance based on distance between the buyer’s shopping address and destination addresses where the purchased products would be in use. With the results, I built ad campaigns where different strategies where employed for different radii targets. In fact, the data that I am compiling has almost endless potential. While utilizing data is a hot topic in the online marketing industry, I have been able to find only a few tools equipped with reliable technologies that can actually help marketers at deeper levels such as reading contextual signals upon which to base predictions. I am convinced that my destiny lies in data mining, machine learning and data visualization, and I hope to immerse myself in these subjects as a graduate student. Ultimately, I would like to design and develop a personalized medical assistant that tailors itself to the medical needs and resources of each individual, thus increasing and enhancing access to medical advice and treatment at a reasonable cost. With an observational study I conducted as a final project for my statistics class in college, I could see that coming from a low-income family, for example, has a more significant effect on students’ academic achievements than race or even disability. I further confirmed the notion that low-income families are more vulnerable to changes in health care systems through a project for my macroeconomics class dealing with US health care system. These prompted me to include helping the least fortunate members of society to improve their circumstances as part of my own professional goals. I aspire to build other personal tools later on as well, all of them oriented towards the noble goal of helping individuals and organizations. Beginning my doctoral studies in Statistics will be the beginning of a new journey that will never end, and I wish I can start it at the Pioneer Valley. As a graduate of Smith, I am well aware of how much investment and support have been put in statistics and data science in the valley, providing students and researchers ample research opportunities. I have faith that I can continue to grow enormously and better myself personally, intellectually, and professionally, just like I did at Smith. I also firmly believe that my research can contribute to your university and academic community as well as millions of people who would benefit from the research.
