I decide to study journalism in America because in my country, China, it is no longer a safe place to do so. “According to laws, regulations and policy, a portion of your search results cannot be shown”. If you search “iCenci”, A notice like this would prompt into screen, it is the Chinese name of a news sharing portal, for which I once worked as a bilingual news translator; it was also during the five months that I worked there that I produced 20 special news reports with co-workers. Now this online news forum has been permanently shut down. My social media profile was forcefully renamed and all the articles we once edited were removed overnight. I used to translate news concerning workers in overseas sweatshops but got prohibited from continuing to do so. To travel the world and report on stories that people are either too afraid to tell or don't think have enough importance would be the best way to commemorate the loss of our website, and more broadly, to revitalize the meaningful side of news industry. I became a “rebel”, fed up with censorship in our media. Nevertheless, I also understand only by seeking my master’s degree in journalism at a cutting-edge institution of higher learning could I work towards greater journalist freedom of expression in my China. Having already completed two internships in the area of journalism makes me witness and closely observe for years the ways in which journalistic values are so easily come under attack or are simply consigned to oblivion, especially when it comes to exposing the truth about how broad sectors of our society remain politically and economically marginalized and are also victims of widespread human rights abuses. The part that brings me the greatest sadness and anger as a Chinese person is the way in which the generalized misery of a large minority of our countrymen is simply swept under the rug and kept in a journalistic blackout by government censors. We live in a society where journalistic endeavors, even with respect to social media, generally serve little more than the interests of propaganda, particularly official propaganda. I want to become and advance as a professional journalist because I see journalists as increasingly important actors in social change in progressive directions and I want to be a part of this. I also look very much forward to helping to advance the cause of accuracy and objectivity in Western reporting on China. During my stay in America, for example, I was appalled to discover that more than half of the Americans with whom I discussed the issue of women’s rights in China still thought that most if not many Chinese people threw away their baby if it turned out to be a girl. Many believed that China was still at war with Japan and others declared China to be on the same level as North Korea in terms of human rights abuses. I choose to apply for a journalism degree at XXXX University basically because your program fits me perfectly by granting an abundance of on-hands experiences. Moreover, your courses emphasize a lot in the fundamental study of journalism, which will absolutely help me strengthen my knowledge base. A young Mexican-American man from El Paso, Texas, I have grown up on the Rio Grande River and have long been fascinated with mining, almost as long as I can remember. Now 24 years old and a voracious reader, I have spent a big chunk of my youth so far reading about mining operations worldwide, especially in Latin America, and this is why I did my undergraduate studies in the Geological Sciences, to prepare for a career in the mining industry. I have not yet had the chance to travel very much. But I am going to have my eyes pointed south in the future and I anticipate that speaking Spanish is going to come in very handy for the long term. My ultimate dream is to become an independent, dual professional, a recognized expert in the field of mining with respect to both geology—particularly mapping—, as well as finance and business operations. I hope to devote my life to discovering and distinguishing the most solid and rewarding of mining investments. After completing your Master’s Program in Geological Sciences at XXXX University, I may very well decide at some point to earn a Global Executive MBA Degree as well. I want to engage in further study into ways that we can better limit fraud in mining operations. I also look forward to studying why mining companies fail. I find myself most drawn to the challenge and this is why I seek a full immersion in the study of: exploration, evaluation, development, production, and financial access as well as closure and reclamation. I have given over 2,000 swimming lessons since the age of 15, for nine years now, and I have never had a student who did not learn to swim, some better than others. I have built my own successful company, XXXX and I give private and group swim classes / therapy Sessions/ Swim Training. I have about 150 clients ranging from 6 months to old adults, along with some clients with disabilities. I have also been writing a book about my methods for beginners to advance swimmers. Each year my business doubles its profits and I look forward to training teachers in the future. I take care of everything related to my business: scheduling of clients, advertising, accounting, and maintaining the pool that I use. Water chemistry is also something that I am very good at since I have many years experience taking care of pools. I see mining as adventure in so many ways, all of which excite me, the travel; the physical contact with the site. I love working outdoors and I love mapping and being able to interpret different areas of rock and how that area was created. Still, it is the business side of the mining adventure that most gets my adrenaline flowing. I have experience with cash flow and how to understand flows on a balance sheet and determine the principal risk factors within a business strategy. I seek to become a successful geologist based on a lot of experience in the field, working for a mining company evaluating good investment opportunities. At the same time, I also look forward to working for or with investment firms that are engaged in the mining sector. I like to think of myself as someone who hopes not only for financial success, but also to never lose sight of our responsibility to humanity and mother earth to use natural resources in sustainable ways that respect our environment and human rights, and serve the common good. I volunteer with the Special Olympics and plan to continue this involvement throughout the course of my career. While environmental protection is not the area in which I have chosen to focus my own central energy, I do consider myself to be a responsible citizen of the planet in this regard and for this reason I am most fascinated with climate studies. Profoundly patriotic, I ask for acceptance to medical school despite the fact that I am already 35 years old, so that I might reach my fullest potential in the service of my country. I have not always been as mature, serious, and determined as I am now. I made a vow in Afghanistan before I left in 2012 towards the end of my deployment, that I would become a doctor and give the rest of my life to the care of our soldiers, both in the field and after they come home wounded. As a physician assistant in Afghanistan, I was in charge of a level II aid station, coordinating triage, trauma management, casualty evacuation and mass casualty preparedness. Week after week, month after month, my intense passion for completing medical school continued to grow and I immediately went to work to prepare myself for entering medical school upon my return home. I now have over 17 years of experience in military, medical procedures, personnel management, and patient relations. Since April of 2013, however, I have truly found myself in a civilian setting as well, working initially as a Physician Assistant in a rural community clinic in Santa Theresa, New Mexico: obtaining medical histories and performing physical examinations, diagnosing and treating acute health problems including infections and injuries, and monitoring chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. I especially enjoy recommending community resources that meet patient and family needs, reviewing post test and examination results with patients, and consulting with triage patients to manage medical and surgical emergencies. Most recently, I have been working in Occupational Medicine, directly supervising 5 medical assistants. I am also privileged to participate in the continuing development of our community clinic, leading discussions on issues of health and safety with our employees. Proactively trying to mitigate workplace injuries, I conduct walk throughs and other on site assessments. Another important part of my job includes evaluating and treating workplace injuries, tracking patient care and making changes as necessary, as well as performing physical, mental status, and medical history examinations. Finally, I continue to serve in the USA Army reserves, which requires me to drill one weekend a month and 2 weeks during annual training during summer months. I recently volunteered to serve as a mobilization readiness officer, traveling to different sites and getting soldiers medically ready and fit for deployment. I worked for the military as a Veterinary Food Inspection Specialist from 1997-2006 and deployed to Kuwait (2003 -2004) as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. I had the opportunity to work alongside NATO forces in the procurement of food for soldiers throughout the region, travelling to various countries and becoming acquainted with a myriad of cultures. I worked as a subject matter expert and instructor on the procurement and quality assurance of red meats and was given the privilege of serving as an Instructor during 2004-2006 at the AMEDD Center and School. I taught operational rations, red meats, and detection of nuclear, biological, and chemical agents in food to Junior Veterinary Food Inspectors. After obtaining a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies, I was given the special pleasure to serve as the Senior Physician Assistant for the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Ft. Bliss, TX, providing medical services for over 3,500 personnel along with 4 other Physician Assistants. My team and I had the responsibility of tracking medical readiness, conducting training, overseeing immunizations, performing physical examinations, sick call and trauma management, collaborating with staff, physicians and other assistants in planning, evaluating, and revising programs as needed. Upon deployment to Afghanistan, 2011-2012, I coordinated triage, trauma management, casualty evacuation and mass casualty preparedness as a Physician Assistant alongside the Forward Surgical Team. The human body and its relation and connectedness to the world make medicine vibrant and rewarding. I want to become part of the solution in our society as a black woman physician who sees herself as a humble servant. I look forward to the way in which, as a physician, I will become an integral part of the advances that we are making in medicine. The Army develops leaders who are well rounded and capable of accomplishing almost anything. I feel strongly that the success that I have had in the military so far has been due to a lot of hard work to master my time and stress management, communication and interpersonal skills and most of all the cultivation of resilience, patience, and self discipline. I am ready at any time that I might be need to return to a war zone on behalf of my country, at the same time that grow increasingly fond of caring for civilians. I hope to distinguish myself as an applicant to medical school primarily on the basis of my experience as a clinical researcher, my dedication to volunteer work, and the great passion that I have for helping the underserved. Both of my parents are Cuban. My mother left Cuba on a boat without even saying goodbye to her family. Since that time, she has struggled to bring almost all of them to the USA, one by one. My mom is my central hero in life because she has never ceased to struggle to make it in America and I will always admire her perseverance. Perhaps the greatest and most relevant gift that my mother has given me is my first language, Spanish. I was born in Miami but I did not start learning English until I went to school. This enables me to communicate with complete fluency with many of the medically underserved who are much more comfortable in their native Spanish than they are communicating in English. I fully intend to put this gift to good use in years to come serving my community as a physician, especially the most recent, undocumented arrivals from Latin America. I also want to make my mother proud of her daughter, so that she sees how her struggle has been highly successful. I can’t exactly pinpoint when it was that I decided I wanted to become a doctor, but as long as I can remember it’s the only career that has ever attracted me. Although I know that this profession is an especially demanding one, I love the complexity and challenge of medicine. So far, I have found a sense of happiness and passion in my volunteer work helping those in need that has surpassed my wildest expectations. I want very much to dedicate my own life to making daily, positive contributions to the lives of others saving lives, preventing suffering, and making meaningful contributions to research for the benefit of future generations of medical practitioners. Thinking back to the first time I volunteered, it was in high school my freshmen year. All throughout high school my passion had been sports, primarily Basketball. As a community service project our basketball team volunteered to help with Special Olympics in Basketball. We helped them in practice, and coached them during games. I was extremely excited to finally apply and join the knowledge I have for basketball with the love I have for volunteering. Have that experience, I wanted to do more, and I was able to set up our team to continue helping them every year. Once I got to college, I got involved in several clubs (American Medical Student Association, Medically Engaged Students, and Delta Phi Epsilon). In DPhiE, I became the community service chairperson, where I directed a group of 80+ girls in community service events. Through AMSA, I was lucky enough to have been chosen to be part of a medical mission to Kingston, Jamaica. We went to Jamaica during our spring break to help underserved clinics and hospitals over there. Here, we spent months gathering medical supplies and raising money for the mission. While we were there our mornings would start at 6am and we wouldn’t finish until 9/10pm. Being on that medical mission made me so much more appreciative of the medical healthcare that we are provided here in the United States. After graduating, with the free time that I had, I was finally able to become part of a foundation I have always wanted to help – Make-A-Wish Foundation (http://wish.org/). Through my experiences of volunteering, I have grown to view life in a different way. I am extremely grateful for everything that I have been blessed with. At the moment, I am involved in research at a local trauma center, specifically working with the burn unit. Our research is both basic science research and clinical science. Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1971, I finished my undergraduate studies and earned the LLB from Addis Ababa University in 1994. This was followed by 9 years of service in Ethiopia’s public sector, including one year with a research institute where I was engaged in intensive research geared towards a harmonization of Ethiopian law with the need for modern development. I was similarly blessed here in America with the marvelous opportunity, immediately after I finishing my masters degree, to work for the XXXX Institute of XXXX University where I conducted a study concerning the land holding systems of West African states and how it affects development. This experience, in particular, has propelled me forward towards further graduate study in the African Studies Department. As a graduate student at XXXX, I was the recipient of the annual XXXX Award for excellent achievement in the study of the US Legal system which was a great honor and has also helped to inspire me toward the goal of doctoral study. Most recently, I have also taken various short term courses in both leadership and Airline Management which I think will serve me well in the future. Here in America I began working as a legal assistant and worked my way up to office manager, during the course of which I have learned a great deal about how the American legal system works. Before coming to America in 2005, I was the Labor Relations Manager for Ethiopian Airlines. In addition to advising them on legal issues, I especially enjoyed participating in the development of the airline’s long term human resource strategic plan. Prior to that position, I worked as a researcher for our Justice and Legal System Research Institute (1998-2000), studying our criminal justice system in Ethiopia (police, prosecutor’s office and federal prison administration) in a search for ways to harmonize it and instill the values and principles of the current constitution. I especially enjoyed this position because I was actively involved in the preparation of policy, making recommendations for our code of civil procedure so as to bring it into full compliance with the constitution. My first position after graduating with my LLM was serving as a legal counsel to the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (1994-1998). I have greatly matured over the course of my many years as a legal professional. Now 42, my values have changed as I enter middle age and I want to grasp hold of the bigger picture. I long to throw myself into what I can do best in the service of those who are most in need back home in Africa, to serve and honor my roots, inheritance, my land, Africa. My short term professional dream is to become a University Professor in my country, Ethiopia. One of the principal reasons why I want so very much to focus on the areas of development and public policy is that there is a shortage of professors teaching and publishing in these areas in Ethiopia, despite their critical importance for our future generations. This is true of Africa, generally speaking, as well as Ethiopia in particular. After teaching in universities in Ethiopia for a few years, my long term objective would be to work for a regional organization such as the African Union on development issues. I hope to lay the foundation in your program for decades to come of distinguished research in the areas of African poverty, especially with respect to land tenure laws and their impact on development and income inequality. I left my native Iran at 7 years old with my parents who were fleeing for their lives as political refugees. It has all worked out for the better, however, and I am thankful to my parents for helping me to see the world, to get to know Azerbaijan, Germany, and then America. Now an American citizen who is fully multicultural and multilingual, I see diversity as greatly enriching our existence—particularly that of our medical community. I hope to use my language skills to some degree professionally in the future, as well as my English. A native speaker of Farsi and fluent in German, I also speak, read, and write Spanish, Turkish, and Azeri on an intermediate level. Finally, I study Latin because I see it as useful for developing a better understanding of medicine. A recent graduate of XXXX with a BS in Biology and still only 22, I have already developed an extensive knowledge of health policy and procedures with a great passion to excel at a career in medicine. A self-starter, detail-oriented, reliable, adaptable, I hope to distinguish myself in the future primarily by my dedication to providing affordable (free) care to those who have the greatest need. I pace myself in all things and never burn out; a rapid learner with focus who plays five musical instruments and is adept at boxing, karate, tae kwon do (black belt), long-distance running, swimming, and soccer: I see all of these activities as complimentary to medicine, helping me to become a better doctor. Following my graduation from college in June, 2012, I threw myself into my next immediate goal: EMT certification, which I completed this past May of 2013. My volunteer work has also been one of my top priorities. From June of 2009 through January of 2013, I served approximately 16 hours per week, as an Emergency Department Ambassador and Patient Unit Volunteer at XXXX University Medical Center, greeting and ushering patients to their destinations, stocking cabinets, providing patients with bedding, changing sheets, dispensing water and food, and doing whatever else needs to be done, mostly for ER. Perhaps my single most important role at the hospital was to comfort patients in ER, particularly those who came alone. Until now, pediatric ER, in particular, has been the most important place in the world to me, very sick children, usually very sad. So many images float through my mind from that four-year period, a 2-year-old girl undergoing chemotherapy, crying, her father sitting next to her holding her hand, crying as well. I want very much to be a heroic doctor whose medical fantasies become realities. I want to return to the Middle East and help out in war zones. I want to rescue children and save their lives. I would like to be in Syria right now with Doctors without Borders, attending to the hundreds of children pulled from the rubble in need of surgery and care. I want to specialize in both surgery and pediatrics, including plastic and reconstructive surgery, to help rebuild the lives that have been saved. Another important aspect of my application to medical school is my service as Outreach Chair for the Health, Nutrition, and Fitness Division of the Student Welfare Commission of the Undergraduate Student Association at XXXX, promoting health, fitness, and proper nutrition on and off campus; blood drives, yoga classes, cooking and relaxation workshops, meetings on gender health, body image, recycling, first aid & CPR programs, global health, and AIDS awareness to name just a few. We also published a health magazine every quarter, written by our own staff members. I reached out to doctors, inviting them to our weekly club meetings to speak about their research and experience as a doctor and sought out those who would be willing to allow us to observe them. For me, observing surgery was a dream come true. I may also strive at some point in the future to specialize in Ophthalmology since I have a special passion for the human eye, which led me to accept my current employment as an Eye Care Supervisor for Lenscrafters, performing pre-eye exams and making patients ready for the optometrist to evaluate, sell prescription eye and sunglasses, fitting eyewear, fixing/repairing eyewear, selling and training patients for contact lenses, schedule eye exams and follow-ups, dispensing eye wear, taking pictures with Optos (new technology in eye care), a camera that takes a 360 degree picture of the retina and screens the eye for problems, including patient's future risk of hypertension, diabetes, cancer--highly effective results and most useful preventive measurement. My duties include overseeing coworker's performance and making improvements as needed. I have learned a lot about cancer through my work with Lenscrafters since a high number of patients have had or survived cancer and I made a point to pay especially careful attention to everything they had to say about the disease and ponder it. I am a Christian woman and I believe in God and I believe the many cancer survivors who told me about the strength they received from God to beat this dreadful disease. Working at XXXX University Medical Center, a primarily Christian hospital, has enhanced my belief that God does give patients the hope that is necessary to survive and the strength to endure. My country, Iran, as a result of its relative isolation, especially from the West, has largely developed a technology of its own. I am very much engaged with the way that technology is always based on physics, the foundation of science. I want very much, however, to become a world-class physicist who is trained not just by the physics professors of my own country—many of whom are marvelous—but also the best of the West. I especially admire the research taking place at your university in the area of ______, most particularly the work of Dr. ____ because of the way that his research helps me to work towards making important contributions of my own to research in the area of ____. Thus, your program is my first choice for graduate school. My own areas of primary research interests span a broad continuum from Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Mechanics through Condensed Matter. I have a special interest in the Casimir Effect and hope very much to be engaged in research in this area in future. I completed both my BS and MS degrees at Azad University in Tehran. The central focus of my undergraduate education was Solid State Physics. In my Master’s program, my central focus was Atomic and Molecular Physics. My father has been my central hero all my life, my most positive and influential inspiration. He graduated from Manhattan University in Mechanical Engineering and we used to have dozens of physics books around especially since he taught in a nearby high school. I was only in the 4th grade when my father died. I inherited all of his books and from that point on, I dedicated myself to physics. Within a few years, I gradually began to understand what I was reading, beginning with small phrases and working my way up. I learned English and Physics together from the very beginning and I feel strongly that this will help me to excel in your program. When I enrolled in my first physics class in the university, I felt like an adventurer stepping upon a previously undiscovered island, curious, excited; I was absolutely thrilled. My real confrontation in physics goes back to the first year of undergrad school in 2000. I enjoyed all of my classes very much but it was Quantum Mechanics that stole my heart as an undergraduate student. For me there is nothing that compares with the joy of visualizing imagination and all of a sudden everything became possible by a certain extent of an amplitude even the hardly probable ones. Right after my second year, using some background training courses on Optics, I started my BS Degree project on X-ray, diffraction, properties and its domain of use; a heuristic method to study the structure of diffraction by sending beams of photons, ions, protons, and electrons, and etc with a similar wavelength to the atomic or molecular distant of the structure under study. I was admitted to the Master’s Program in Atomic and Molecular Physics and soon found myself with several close friends deeply involved in the study of cosmology, which heightened my interest in theoretical physics as well. I found myself devoting large amounts of my time and energy to the extent to which time is an inseparable factor of our universe or to what extent our universe expands, and how dark matter contributes a major part of the whole matter of our universe. I became enchanted by special relativity. Given my diverse interests and my increasing dedication to interdisciplinary study, I was able to base my Master’s Thesis on inter-disciplinary objectives. I wrote my thesis on the history of the Casimir Effect, the way that this phenomenon originated from the notion of zero point energies of vacuum fields of QET. I closely examined various approaches to vacuum energies, lowest ground states of mostly quantum systems, and the calculations that are involved in the Casimir Effect. I sought to portray how the energy difference from a complete vacuum could exert a long range effect and eventually contribute to a cosmological constant. Using both negative and positive solutions instead of considering merely positive sets of Klein-Gordon equation which is called Krein space is such an intact fashion to calculate Casimir force. One of its outstanding advantages is, it automatically eliminates raised infinities throughout the calculation process .The idea of Casimir Effect via Krein space was firstly presented by Dr. XXXX whose paper I reviewed in my thesis. Subsequently, I started learning more of field theory, and I got my paper published with my advisor Dr. XXXX, “a Review over Krien Space “. Currently, I have been working on a project dealing with propagators under the supervision of my adviser. I have also gained professional experience working in a physics lab at the same time that I completed my studies. I am most comfortable working in an international educational environment. I have been working towards gaining international exposure by continuing my studies at two international schools, an intensive program “Cosmology, Particle physics and implication for technology” at NTU, Singapore, organized by IAS and supported by CERN, Jan-Feb 2012, as well as a school of neutrino physics supported by ICTP at IPM, Iran, Sep 2012. I thrive on politics, religion, ethnic issues, and world as well as national news. I deeply respect the way in which the press serves to form and guide popular opinion and I crave the responsibility that comes with the role of a journalist. I want very much to become part of a new generation of journalists that will help us to transcend our current level of scandal in the press, making it more transparent and honest. Investing countless hours in my own investigation of online media channels, I have come to especially admire their global reach. I too want to participate in providing trustworthy information to global audiences and I see the devotion of my life to the goal of becoming the most trustworthy reporter possible to be a noble enterprise. I am a cosmopolitan young woman who is as well traveled as I am read, having visited England for a week and Germany, France, and Switzerland for a full month in each place. I have also visited St Lucia, New Zealand, the Cook Islands; and I went to the Bahamas as a Research Assistant with Brigham Young University. While my undergraduate major was Political Science, I have been engaged with journalism for some time, writing projects and reports about subjects in journalism and I worked on the school newspaper in high school. I have a great passion for writing and the articulation of balanced positions on social issues. From high school through college, my writing assignments were never a chore. Rather, I saw each one as a feast and relished it as such. Writing is both my escape and my way in, my deepest and most satisfying self-expression, and I want it to become the vehicle of my contribution to humanity, for it is the area in which I most excel, my best, my most authentic. I love writing. I feel strongly that I have much to contribute to your program in terms of diversity and inclusiveness since I am a Latina, Cuban-American who was raised to have and still holds conservative values that will undoubtedly make for some lively discussion in a generally liberal environment such as XXU. I see XXXX University as the center of the world, culturally speaking, and I can think of no other program that could serve as well for a springboard into the cutting edge of journalism. I am particularly engaged with the wellbeing of women with a distinguished track record of volunteer service at a women’s shelter. I hope to work hard as a journalist to advocate on behalf of needy and abused women and children, worldwide. I look forward to helping to make the press more transparent, honest, and accountable. I feel strongly that diversity is my country’s greatest strength and I want to labor to assure that minority voices are given sufficient attention by the mainstream media, including conservative minority voices and opinions. My family is Mormon and my father, who I adore, is a retired Air Force Officer, which undoubtedly has contributed to the shape of my own conservative political persuasion. I am much better at understanding Spanish than I am at speaking it. This is because since I can remember I've been hearing Spanish in my home. My father who came here as a refugee would call his mother and siblings back in Miami at least once a week and I would listen for a couple hours to a very fast type of Spanish. (Cubans have a reputation as the fastest talkers in Latin America.) I began studying Spanish in school from the age of 6. Every summer my family would go down to Miami to visit my dad’s extended family. Most of the time, we would communicate in Spanish. Given my family background and childhood experience, I am certain that within a few months on the job as a bi-lingual journalist, I will be speaking Spanish more and more because I find it to be much more expressive than English, more tonal, more emotional. And it is the emotion that I seek to capture as a journalist. I would never tell my mom, but I related a lot more to the richness of my dad's Cuban culture and family than to my mom’s more mainstream origins. I am extremely proud of my Cuban heritage, although it is not something my dad has been very open about, perhaps sometimes a little ashamed of, or embarrassed by. I think he was just afraid of being treated differently by Americans if they knew his heritage. He even changed his last name from Caballero to May (my abuela's maiden name) when he came over to the United States from Cuba at 14. Cuba is something he rarely talks about; unless it's remembering the times he spent with his friends. My dad has been the biggest inspiration in my life, especially in regard to hard work and education. He enrolled in a military academy, and is now is a lieutenant colonel. My dad is successful because he is always trying to better himself through continuing education. I want to make him proud of his daughter. I believe in personal responsibility, individual liberty, a limited government, and traditional American values. I strongly support legal immigration only, and oppose amnesty for those who enter illegally. I also have passionate feelings about abortion, clean energy, same-sex marriage, the war on terrorism, and welfare. I believe that life begins at conception and that an unborn baby is a living human being with rights that are distinct from those of his mother. I oppose tax-payer funded abortions. This is one of the issues that I tend to get most heated about because I feel so strongly about how immoral abortion is. With respect to energy I am more liberal. I fully support our President’s dedication to the increased exploration of alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power. When I lived in Hawaii, there was a lot of windmills and alternative energy on the island. I think it’s exciting when entire areas try to “go green”. While many young people are changing their minds on the issue of gay marriage, I will forever believe that marriage is the union of one man and one woman. This is because I see marriage as something like a license for procreation, which gay people cannot do. With respect to terrorism I am a total conservative who believes that captured terrorists should be treated as enemy combatants and tried in military courts. I feel strongly that we must protect our homeland from terrorists who only want to exploit and destroy our traditional American values. I strongly oppose long-term welfare. As a journalist in search of good news, I hope to report on opportunities being provided for people to become self-reliant rather than dependent on the government. My principle passion with respect to how to overcome poverty is to educate women. I honestly believe that if programs were set-up around the world to educate women living at or below the poverty level, that poverty would all but vanish in time. I also see obesity as a huge problem, especially in America. I look forward to writing about diabetes, coronary heart disease, strokes, hypertension, arthritis, and a deadly, highly addictive drug called sugar that stimulates the same pleasure centers of the brain that respond to heroin and cocaine. I feel strongly about educating the population on public health and how to eat healthy and stay active. I thank you for considering my application to your distinguished program.

I have grown up in Lebanon where life is hard for the majority of people, especially because of the prevalence of disease and a health care system that fails to address our ongoing health care crises. Both of my parents are doctors and this helped to sensitize me from a very young age concerning the suffering that surrounded me, especially insofar as many people died as a result of easily preventable disease. With my dad who is a neurosurgeon and my mom who is an ob/gyn, I am thankful to have had powerful role models throughout my development. My dad often gives people a second chance at life and my mom brings new, little people into the world. They have both been highly influential in my decision to also pursue a career as a health care professional, giving my all to do all that I can to minimize disease by fighting it at its source. I am already fully immersed in epidemiology in my private studies because I see it as an area that holds special promise for both public health and preventive medicine. Watching poor people wander the streets in Beirut, desperately in need of help, this gradually instilled in me the dream of doing something about this tragedy that might be able to show concrete progress, if not for our children in Lebanon, at least for our grandchildren. Our public health challenges have also been exacerbated by war, first civil war, followed by devastating wars with Israel. This has resulted in inferior public health infrastructures in many areas of my country, even for a developing country. I see your program at UXX as the best fit for my interests, especially because of the vast inter-disciplinary resources that I will be able to bring to bear on my quest to better understand and confront the spread of disease in Lebanon and throughout the Arab world. Upon graduation from you program at UXX, it is my intention to return to Lebanon where I can put my new skills and understanding immediately to work. I intend to jump right in to two prominent struggles that are ongoing in my country: making both the water and the food safer to eat and drink. I plan to put the skills that I hope to learn from UXX to good use in Lebanon. Your distinguished program will enable me to work on the creative edge of the search for new and more effective strategies to improve the quality and safety of food and water supplies, which will have enormous benefit over the long term. The path that has led me to the field of public health began at a very young age. My dad’s hard work and perseverance, in particular, always motivated me to push especially hard and never give up. Like most of the Developing World, easily preventable disease is most common in Lebanon and this is where I want to dedicate my life, struggling against this enemy. I have always been amazed and intrigued by how things work in our body, always wondering why certain people got sick while others did not. The class that I took in disease biology, in particular, greatly enhanced my understanding and also confirmed my desire to pursue graduate studies in epidemiology. Volunteering at a hospital has helped made me realize that it's not that people don't want to improve their health and the health of their children it's more that they are simply unaware of the nature and number of threats to their children’s health. This is why I see public health education as the foundation of preventative medicine. Your masters program at UXX would give me the experience and exposure that I am looking for, making full use of my passion for both math and biology. I look forward to the opportunity to develop my skills and enhance my knowledge as potential leader in my country in the area of public health.

I was raised in China until moving to the US at the age of 15. Consequently, I have the cultural sense and reason of the Chinese yet have adopted much of the culture of the West too. I see this as an asset to me in my desire to work towards the degree since I relate well to both worlds, East and West, and so can make people comfortable who are moving between these contrasting worlds. Chinese people regard hospitality to visitors as a duty and a pleasure. To put a visitor at total ease and to offer them the best in terms of comfort and food comes naturally to most people from my culture. I enjoy being the guest of people who treat me with respect and consideration and enjoy providing such treatment to those who visit me and my family. I am also deeply interested in business and finance. I believe that the program will enable me to pursue these interests in order to provide me with an excellent career path and my employers and their clients with a person who is passionately interested in being an excellent employee and host. I believe that my undergraduate studies together with my practical and fairly wide ranging experience in the hospitality industry provides a firm foundation for success in the program together with a natural curiosity and a passion to succeed. The major lesson that I have learned in my experience to date has been that though teamwork is important in any endeavor, in hospitality it is the most basic ingredient for success. I know that successful teams do not just happen and I hope to develop a very high level of skill in creating and maintaining successful, happy working teams through my studies and research in the program. My goals are: to join and excel in the program; to join a management trainee program with a major hotel chain; to acquire skills and knowledge in a wide area of hotel operations especially in the areas of event planning, marketing, finance and branding strategy; ultimately to move back to Asia to apply the expertise and experience acquired in the role of Regional Director of Sales and Marketing. As well as living in China and the United States, I lived in France for several months. I thoroughly enjoyed observing a new culture and I acquired a basic knowledge of French which I intend to develop further as well as other European languages. I am bilingual in English/Mandarin and can converse well in Cantonese. I have carefully considered the various programs available to me and conclude that your own is a ‘perfect fit’ for my purposes. I seek a program that will develop, adapt and channel the knowledge and skills I have acquired to date in Marketing and Accounting specifically to the hospitality industry and am certain that the program will do so. I am looking for a program which will provide practical skills and experience and I see that case studies are emphasized in the program. I am impressed by the breadth of the curriculum and see that there are a number of elective courses that fit perfectly with my interests and goals. I am also very impressed by the wide range of areas of expertise offered by the faculty members and with the successful outcomes enjoyed by program alumni. I am aware that the program will attract many well qualified applicants but I genuinely regard myself as an exceptional candidate. I have a good academic record in highly relevant disciplines and I have practical experience in the hospitality industry. I believe that this background will enable me to ‘add value’ to my class. I also believe that I have the personal characteristics of enthusiasm, a love of challenges, and a capacity to work well within a team that will enable me to excel within the program. However my main recommendation is a passion to work in the hospitality industry and to do so at a level where I can make a real difference both to the guest’s experience and to my employer’s ‘bottom line’.

I am a Thai National, born and raised in Bangkok, and I have been extremely fortunate in being able to pursue my studies in the United States. This has given me a valuable insight into the depth and quality of education in this country and convinced me to apply for my doctorate program at Columbia. I have been immersed in the field of electrical engineering from a very early age and I seemed destined to follow this path as a career. This commitment to and love of my subject has not faltered during my studies but instead has intensified into a desire to gain an even greater understanding. I believe that the doctorate program at XXXX will provide me with an outstanding opportunity to do this. I am particularly excited by the innovative research undertaken by the faculty members which is closely related to my own areas of interest. I am looking forward to conducting my own inquiries into the theory, design and applications of antennas and electromagnetic waves and their related fields I am, at present, a lieutenant in the Thai Navy with five years work experience behind me. I am very proud of this position and see it as an opportunity to give back to my country in a practical and rewarding manner. Through the Navy I was granted a full scholarship to study for my Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of XXXX. Once I had successfully achieved this I was committed to return to Thailand and take up my naval post again. This allowed me a chance to gain invaluable hands on experience for four years. I supervised a team of naval experts charged with the overhaul and replacement of electrical cabling on ships of the Thai Navy. This was exacting work not only due to the complexities that make up a naval ship but also because the scheduling and time allocation were extremely precise and all deadlines had to be met. This thoroughly tested both my leadership skills and my knowledge of engineering and has proved to be a valuable experience. Most importantly, my time away from academia had not blunted my thirst for knowledge and in 2009 I applied for and received a full scholarship to further my studies in the United States. I will complete my Masters in Electrical Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute in New York this coming December. At the same time I have volunteered to work on the RFID Research Project with XXXX Systems Company here at the XXXX. This is not a requirement for my masters but it involves an area of electrical engineering that has always intrigued me and I want to broaden my knowledge of electromagnetic waves and antenna design. Earlier this year, I worked with Professor XXXX on his project involving c-programming on CC430 (from Texas Instruments) and designing an antenna. The project’s ultimate goal was to integrate a small circuit board and an antenna into a dental appliance that can read the user’s body temperature and transmit this information to a PC. It is the practical application of science that has always fascinated me. My long term goal is to return to Thailand and to take up a professorship at the Royal Thai Naval Academy. This will allow me to repay the trust that has been placed in me by giving me the opportunity to teach another generation of young Thais who will hopeful become the future of our country. It will also afford me the possibility to continue my own research into advancements into electromagnetic applications and devices. I have always been an avid student and very much devoted to my chosen field. Even though I was born and raised in Thailand, I have already been studying for a total of six years in the United States and I consider that my English is very good. My application to earn my Ph.D. at XXXX is based on both the exceptional quality and scope of your program and also on my own desire to extend my knowledge of electrical engineering as far as I can. I want to constantly challenge my own understanding and continually strive to learn more.
