As a child, while my friends watched their favorite heroes on TV, I immersed myself in reading Popular Science books. During school vacations, I was introduced to biology, chemistry, and the physical sciences. I spent my long summer days this way, with my fascination growing with every page I turned.
Many students question how far their education will take them; I, however, have taken mine to India, the United Kingdom, and now the United States. Starting in India, I earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacology from one of the country's oldest and most prestigious universities, known for its merit-based admissions and five-star government rating. I graduated with distinction, gaining a solid foundation in human biology, pharmacology, biotechnology, molecular biology, and microbiology.
The rigorous and challenging introduction to the theoretical and practical aspects of drug actions on receptors and laboratory techniques left me wanting more. Over four years, I acquired extensive laboratory experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis, formulation preparation, chromatography, and spectroscopy techniques.
In England, my interest in organic chemistry and pharmacology, particularly where they intersect with biology, led me to pursue a master's in pharmacology. I diligently studied various molecular biology techniques, such as gene manipulation, hybridization, electrophoresis, blotting, and PCR, and actively participated in in-vitro pharmacokinetic studies and drug target identification using molecular biology techniques.
I am immensely proud of my research on optimizing silver staining protocols for DNA and developing new DNA silver staining protocols. Unlike conventional Ethidium bromide staining, these new silver staining methods are non-carcinogenic and do not require expensive UV light transilluminators to view bands on electrophoretic gels, making them valuable for label-free detection in DNA microarray technology. This project confirmed that I had made the right choice in pursuing biology.
