Personal Purpose Statement PHD Computer Science Graduate School, Editor's Samples

Originally from Jordan, I am currently in the USA for a year to improve my English skills before starting a doctoral program in computer science. My research interests and long-term goals focus on security management, networks, risk assessment of cyber-physical control systems, and cybersecurity. The Ph.D. program in Computer Science at the University of XXXX is my top choice due to its academic excellence and global recognition as a leading research institution in information assurance education. I highly respect your program for being among the first seven Centers of Excellence in Information Assurance Education. The XXXX lab at the University of XXXX, with its innovative cybersecurity research, also impresses me. Additionally, I am attracted to the XXXX community and look forward to exploring the bike paths, as I am an avid cyclist who prefers nature over the city's hustle and bustle.

At Al-Balqa Applied University, I studied Software Engineering with an interdisciplinary approach, covering related fields. My education sparked my growing passion for research and development (R&D), particularly in network security, Cloud computing, and cybersecurity. For my senior project, I developed a sublanguage of HTML to prevent cross-site scripting attacks. During my final semester, I interned at the National Information Technology Center (NITC) for four months, gaining valuable insights into my professional interests and solidifying my career path.

After graduating, driven by my desire for continuous learning and a sense of patriotism, I joined the Jordan Armed Forces, working with the Directorate of Cyber Security and Information Technology until recently moving to the USA. I plan to return to the same governmental agency in Jordan after completing my Ph.D., ideally at the University of XXXX. My ultimate career goal is to lead the agency. During my time with the Directorate, I enhanced my research capabilities and developed strong problem-solving skills essential for cybersecurity experts. It was an honor to be part of a team working on the security implementation of the e-government cloud environment. I also taught courses at the Information Technology Training Institute (ITTI) for over five years in Oracle, VB, CCNA, and network security, and served as a part-time instructor at XXXX University, teaching computer center staff about the latest information and communication technology techniques, such as Cloud Computing.

My MSc degree and thesis on using cloud computing for e-government services in Jordan were well-received. We proposed a hybrid cloud computing model for Jordan’s e-Government using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to test the model. This experience will benefit me in graduate school. I have enjoyed various intensive training and courses in network security and cybersecurity with the Jordan Armed Forces and have received a full scholarship from JAF to study cybersecurity in the USA. Upon returning, I will serve as an instructor. I have also been trained by U.S. Army and NATO personnel in security management, learning advanced techniques for identifying vulnerabilities, assessing threats, preventing and tolerating malicious activities, and recovering from attacks. These experiences, along with my graduate studies and over five years of practical experience, have equipped me with the knowledge and skills to excel in my Ph.D. studies at the University of XXXX.
