MS Financial Engineering Personal Purpose Statement

I am a woman originally from China, now living in Ohio. I will earn a BS in Accounting in May and a BA in Mathematics and Statistics in July 2011. I am proficient in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English.
From my first Finance class, I was fascinated. The concept that intangible factors could create significant value and influence the economy intrigued me. Through various business courses, I gained an understanding of the expansive business world, realizing that no other academic or career path was as fitting for me.
In high school, I discovered a passion for computer programming, securing second place in a local competition. I also achieved second place in the China Mathematics Competition. These accomplishments were due to my strong analytical and problem-solving skills, further emphasized by my research on the mathematical principles of fractals and their societal applications during my undergraduate math studies.
My academic endeavors, combined with internships and volunteer work, have given me a robust foundation in Accountancy, further bolstered by my studies in Math and Statistics.
Among my various internships, the most engaging was with the XXXX Credit Union. During this time, risk assessment and management became tangible, and I recognized its crucial impact on individuals, businesses, and society, especially considering recent global financial events. I realized that my analytical and mathematical skills could be effectively applied to risk management, enabling me to make a significant impact. This realization led me to seek a program that would enhance my skills and interests.
In the new global economic landscape, I understand that risk management is increasingly vital, as countries are no longer isolated from poor decisions made elsewhere.
During my sophomore year at XXU, I demonstrated leadership and creativity in voluntary work. Many international students felt homesick and missed familiar foods, so I founded and became the first president of the Universal Food Organization. This group provided home-country food for international students and introduced local students to diverse cultures. Under my leadership, the organization grew from 20 to 300 members, offering me valuable experience in time management, communication, teamwork, and collaboration with other organizations for mutual benefit.
Living in two contrasting cultures and interacting with people from various backgrounds has been an integral part of my education. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures, learning about them, and sharing my own experiences.
I see the program as an opportunity to deepen my knowledge in statistical analysis and financial analysis modeling. I also aim to develop skills in professional analysis, business communications, and decision-making. The program will help me achieve my short-term goal of contributing to my home country’s economy, where I aspire to work as a financial analyst for a major consulting firm or bank. My long-term ambition is to become the chief financial officer of a major company.
After thoroughly researching available programs, I believe yours is the best fit to achieve my academic and career goals. Additionally, a friend currently in the program has shared her incredibly positive experiences. I hope to conduct research in financial risk management if accepted. I understand the program will attract many qualified applicants, but I am confident that my personal qualities, skills, experience, academic background, and passion for risk will allow me to benefit from the program and contribute valuable insights to my classmates and the academic community.
