I am proficient in both English and Spanish and have a rudimentary grasp of Italian, which I picked up during a four-month stay in Florence, Italy. I have extensively traveled throughout Europe, South America, and the Middle East.
I initially took Psychology 101 to meet an elective requirement, but I soon became deeply interested in the subject and decided to major in it for my bachelor's degree, where I excelled. My passion for psychology has grown immensely, and I now view its application, especially in children's wellbeing, as more of a calling than just a career choice. I am particularly drawn to this program due to its emphasis on multicultural school psychology.
I have been involved in various teaching roles for several years. Between 2002 and 2004 in New York, I tutored children aged 4 to 11 in after-school classes across different academic subjects. Additionally, I taught English at various levels during a three-month stay in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I hold a TEFL certificate.
While in Buenos Aires, I participated in voluntary educational activities alongside my paid teaching work. I taught English to individuals from underprivileged communities, with students of diverse ages and abilities. This included teaching English to a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and providing basic skills education to a severely mentally disabled 13-year-old boy. I found great fulfillment in helping these children and learned a lot about connecting with highly challenged children to achieve successful outcomes. I also developed an appreciation for the uniqueness of each child and the importance of tailoring teaching methods to each child's personality and ability level.
I have worked with, studied alongside, and taught adults and children from diverse cultures in various countries and settings. I have also tutored children of different backgrounds in New York. I believe this experience has given me a strong foundation to benefit from the program, which emphasizes psychology fieldwork in culturally diverse environments. If selected, I hope to conduct research in physiology and explore new methods of helping children learn in multicultural settings.
Upon completing the master's program, my goal is to work in New York City schools, assisting and encouraging children to overcome obstacles that might hinder a successful educational journey and helping them realize their educational and personal potential to the fullest extent.
I understand there will be many highly qualified applicants for the program, but I sincerely believe that my work, volunteer activities, and life experiences have prepared me to gain the most from this program and to contribute significantly by offering valuable insights to my class and the academic community.
Thank you for considering my application for the master's program.
