MSED Master of Science Counselor Education Statement

Since my time as an assistant day care provider, I have been drawn to working with children in ways that have profoundly shaped my life and aspirations. The immense satisfaction I felt when parents shared how much their children admired me was not just a fleeting moment of joy; it was a pivotal experience that solidified my desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people. Growing up in Harlem and the Bronx as a Woman of Color, I became acutely aware of the myriad challenges faced by inner-city children. These challenges include not only acculturation and poverty but also inadequate childcare resources and the pervasive effects of racism. Having lived through these experiences myself, I have developed a deep sense of empathy and a strong commitment to helping these children not just survive but thrive in an often hostile environment.

Raising my own children has transformed our home into a vibrant community center for their friends and peers. On any given day, our living room would be filled with the sounds of laughter, the aroma of pizza, the scent of freshly popped popcorn, and the excitement of movie nights, creating a welcoming atmosphere for children of all ages. Many of these young individuals sought me out for personal conversations, feeling comfortable enough to share their experiences, challenges, and successes. I listened to their stories with an open heart, offering guidance and support as best as I could, knowing that sometimes just having someone to talk to can make a world of difference in a child's life.

In addition to my role as a nurturing caregiver at home, I have also volunteered extensively at my children’s schools, engaging with students from Pre-K through fifth grade. This hands-on involvement allowed me to witness firsthand the educational landscape and the diverse needs of children in various learning environments. Now that my children are older and more independent, I feel a renewed sense of purpose and am ready to dedicate my time and energy to pursuing a graduate Guidance Counseling program, with a specific focus on Early Childhood education. I believe that laying a strong foundation during these formative years is crucial for long-term success.

After graduation, my goal is to counsel children in public schools, particularly in socio-economically challenged areas, where the need for support is most critical. I am passionate about helping these children realize their full potential by building their self-esteem and fostering a sense of self-efficacy. Inner-city kids face significant obstacles that can hinder their academic and personal growth, and I aim to provide the empowerment, motivation, and inspiration they so desperately need. My own experiences growing up in the inner city, combined with my interactions with children in Jamaica, Antigua, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic, have underscored for me the vital importance of educational inclusion and the transformative power of guidance.

Alongside these rich personal experiences, I bring a strong academic foundation from my studies at the College of XXXX. The institution has become my top choice for academic growth, impressing me with its commitment to cultural diversity, its flexible curriculum that can be tailored to meet my needs, and its welcoming academic environment where I can truly excel and develop my skills as a future counselor. I am eager to immerse myself in this enriching academic community, where I can learn from esteemed faculty and collaborate with like-minded peers who share my passion for making a difference in the lives of children.
