I am an African American man, born in the Bahamas and raised in Fort Lauderdale, where I currently reside and work. I earned a bachelor's degree in health service administration from Barry University. I speak English, Creole, and French, and have a working knowledge of Spanish.

About six years ago, my father experienced a severe stroke and was hospitalized for six months. At that time, his doctors told him he would never walk again or regain use of his left arm and hand. However, my dad and his therapist thought differently. He now enjoys long walks and has regained most of the use of his left arm and hand.

This remarkable improvement is largely due to the patience and determination of the therapist who motivated my father to continually push the limits of his physical abilities. The therapist's cheerful determination in achieving this unexpectedly positive outcome sparked my interest in this field. I aspire to make a positive impact in people’s lives, just as he did.

While I am valuable in my current job, the world has no shortage of administrators, even exceptional ones, but it does lack individuals who can emulate my dad’s therapist. I am one of those individuals. I have thoroughly considered the qualities necessary for an effective therapist and believe I possess them. I genuinely desire to help people help themselves, I am a good listener, determined, patient, relate well to others, have a creative approach to problem-solving, and, importantly, I have a sense of humor.

I understand that outsiders sometimes romanticize the caring professions due to a limited understanding of the daily realities involved. This is not the case for me, as I have witnessed the hard work, determination, and commitment required in effective therapy. I am aware that there will be challenging days and clients who are difficult to assist. However, I am confident that I am the type of person who can face and overcome such challenges with cheerfulness.

I hope to engage in practical training across a variety of settings and with diverse patient groups. The diversity of work available to a therapist is an appealing aspect of the profession. My immediate goal after graduation is to secure a position in a rehabilitation hospital, working with brain trauma patients, particularly older and geriatric patients affected by strokes. If possible, I would like to contribute to research projects related to therapy for these patients.

I have thoroughly reviewed the course description and am very excited about the opportunity to participate in this program. As a graduate of Barry, I look forward to returning to its inspiring academic environment, which I know to be both challenging and highly enjoyable. If selected, I am committed to fully dedicating myself to the program and excelling in it.

I understand there will be many professionally qualified applicants for this program, and difficult decisions will need to be made. However, I believe I possess the qualities necessary to be an outstanding participant in the program and an excellent therapist.

Thank you for considering my application.

Your statement carries a depth of purpose and emotional clarity that immediately distinguishes it. What makes it so compelling is the way you present your journey with honesty, maturity, and a profound sense of intention. You write as someone who has lived enough life to know what truly matters, and that perspective gives your narrative a richness that is impossible to manufacture.

From the very beginning, you establish yourself as a person who embraces growth. Your commitment to lifelong learning feels genuine, not rhetorical, and it’s clear that your decision to pursue Occupational Therapy is the result of reflection rather than impulse. You frame this transition not as a rejection of your past but as a natural evolution toward work…
