Crafting a Global Vision: A Personal Statement for MA Economics in the UK, Reflecting Chinese Heritage and Aspirations.

From an early age, frequent visits to China have allowed me to observe the transformation of my small home village into a thriving town. This economic development, which has affected almost every aspect of Chinese life, sparked my interest in economics. By pursuing this interest through A-level studies, I've been able to explore how economic theories shape society and influence decision-making. Understanding the nature of firms and markets has enabled me to examine various aspects of China's economic reform and its significant impact on the global market. This is why I am keen to study economics further, to deepen my appreciation of how economic changes affect society.

Since beginning my A-levels, I have regularly read the Financial Times and Economax, which have helped me understand how economics applies to current issues and events. I've also read books like 'A Very Short Introduction to Capitalism' by J. Fulcher, which provides insight into the rise of a capitalist free market in the UK and its societal effects. I particularly enjoyed Legrain's 'Open World: The Truth About Globalisation', which offers a compelling argument for globalisation, covering topics such as migration, trade, the environment, and technology. Additionally, reading 'The Undercover Economist' by T. Harford and 'The Armchair Economist' by S. Landsburg has helped me discover how economics relates to everyday decisions, enhancing my reasoning skills.

I have also sought to learn about the subject through firsthand experience. I was fortunate to gain invaluable work experience at a private equity investment firm, which was inspiring as I aspire to pursue a career in this field with a degree in Economics. During the summer of 2007, I worked in China, auditing for China Rightson Certified Public Accountancy and working in the finance department at State Grid. This experience in a transitioning market economy made me realize the extent of change China must undergo to fully embrace a true market economy ethos. Currently, I am part of a team competing in the Target Two Point Zero challenge, assuming the role of the MPC, which is enhancing my macroeconomic analysis skills.

I have received academic excellence awards for four consecutive years and a prestigious King Edward Scholarship, awarded to only two individuals per year, for my GCSE performance. Additionally, I have earned merit awards in both Junior and Intermediate Maths Olympiads on three occasions and a distinction in the Senior Maths Olympiad. As a member of the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth, I attended a summer residential maths course that I thoroughly enjoyed.

As a member of the school's student council in earlier years, I represented my form, conveying their ideas to the council. Now, as an elected prefect, I continue this role while contributing to the smooth running of the school. Attending my local Chinese school weekly has made me fluent in the language and deepened my understanding of Chinese history and culture. I led a team in the Envision Charity Scheme, organizing events to protect the local environment; as project manager for my Education in Engineering Scheme project, I received a Gold Crest award. Additionally, I have been a maths mentor for students in local primary schools and at school maths masterclasses. I am an avid guitarist, regularly performing in guitar ensembles, and have represented my school and house in rugby and chess, as well as competing for Warwickshire County Badminton at U16.

I am eager to further develop my interest in globalisation and enhance my analytical skills as an economist. I also hope to continue pursuing my extracurricular interests and contribute to university life.
