When asked, "Who is your engineering hero?" I truthfully replied that it is my father. He operated an auto repair shop in South Vietnam, where he repaired and maintained three-wheel taxis and cars. People depended on him to help them earn a living and support their families, and he did everything he could to keep them on the move.
After the Vietnam War, acquiring even the most basic materials or spare parts was either challenging or impossible. My father, a self-taught mechanic, had to display remarkable problem-solving skills, creativity, determination, and originality in his daily work. He taught me foundational engineering skills that money can't buy, and his innovative approach to problem-solving has greatly aided my research endeavors.
With engineering ingrained in me and a high-quality informal apprenticeship behind me, I embarked on a successful academic journey in engineering. I earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Vietnam University of Technology in 1994, followed by a master's degree in management, a B.Sc. in Network and Communication Management, and a master's in mechanical engineering, all in the USA.
My father not only imparted engineering skills and knowledge but was also an excellent teacher. I have inherited his passion for sharing knowledge. During my master's in mechanical engineering, I volunteered as an Instructional Student Assistant and served as a Volunteer Tutor at XXXX University while completing my degree. Additionally, I have been an enthusiastic and effective tutor in Math, Physics, and Chemistry for high school students.
I am thrilled by the various components of the PhD program in Engineering Education at XXXX University. I am eager to blend research with effective teaching of engineering concepts and techniques and to inspire enthusiastic engineers in a stimulating academic environment.
With a keen interest in 3D computer-based simulations, I have developed expertise in using them to help K-12 and pre-college students visualize and understand complex physics phenomena and engineering challenges. I hope to further this within the program. These simulations hold great potential for cost-effective concept and prototype testing, and I am excited to explore my ideas in this area.
I have enjoyed studying, working, and socializing with individuals from diverse cultural and social backgrounds. I am experienced in teamwork and leadership, and I take pride in my love for people and well-developed sense of humor.
I am aware that the program will attract many qualified applicants. However, I believe I am an exceptional candidate. I am a highly qualified engineer, capable of meeting the program's academic demands; I have been an enthusiastic and effective teacher of science and engineering; I possess proven skills and experience in conducting and leading research projects. My greatest asset is a passion for engineering and a strong desire to improve lives through its effective application while inspiring others to do the same.
