XXXX is my top choice for graduate school because it is the best university near my home. This matters to me as I believe I can excel with the support of my family and social network. I am particularly drawn to your program because it offers a master's degree in education counseling alongside the PPS Credential. I am eager to study under Professor XXXX, who dedicates much of her work to multiculturalism, the field of educational research where I aim to make my mark in the future.
A pivotal moment during my undergraduate studies occurred when I wrote a research paper that compared various Asian cultures. I aimed to explore the similarities and differences in immigration experiences based on their countries of origin, such as Asians versus Latinos. While there is extensive literature on the latter, I found little on the former. As a future school counselor, I am committed to helping students achieve their dreams, regardless of their ethnicity and background. Many of my students will be from minority backgrounds, which excites me about this field because I can advocate for them and help them accomplish what they thought impossible. Although I am not yet fluent in Spanish and American Sign Language, which are two of my greatest life goals, I am only twenty-one and have just started dreaming a little in both languages. I am committed to mastering both languages, which gives me purpose and motivation to excel as an educator.
I began and continue to work as a recreation leader in after-school programs. I also assist at-risk junior-high students with homework and engage them in enjoyable, interactive, and educational activities, all while building strong relationships where they feel comfortable sharing their personal lives and concerns. In 2017, I started working as a summer school paraprofessional, assisting in a special education classroom. I help teach students their specific goals and work with them to enhance their social and communication skills. During the Summers of 2016 and 2017, I volunteered at my local hospital gift shop. For the summer of 2018, I hope to volunteer in the mom and baby department.
In my current role as a Program Leader in the XXXX After School Programs, I interact with and supervise junior high students daily. I have developed a strong rapport with them, and we are building trusting relationships. I believe my greatest contribution will be helping students realize their potential and achieve their dreams by guiding them on educational and real-world pathways. I am passionate about helping troubled youth, including those involved in gang violence or delinquency. I look forward to many years as a high school guidance counselor known for my dedication to school programs like career day, college night, and military day, where each military branch can make informative presentations to students. In addition to being a high school guidance counselor, I envision volunteering with troubled youth and local group homes, helping young people resolve their issues so they can fulfill their potential.
